OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A parade of cars and motorcycles circled around a Jewish community center's parking lot on Sunday for a World War II veteran's centennial birthday celebration."Why is everybody here today? Well, you better ask them (family members)," said Mike Katzman, who turned 100 years old on Monday. "I think it's because I am so good looking."While he might have been joking, he was there for a reason."I am one of the luckiest guys in the world to hit 100," Katzman said.He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 and served as a specialist in Texas and five other bases and schools throughout the United States. His family wanted to throw him a party at the community center, where he loves to workout, but the COVID-19 pandemic struck.Instead, he had a parade of family, friends and fellow veterans who drove by to say, "happy birthday."He has a few secrets to living this long: working out, giving to others and his special diet from when he was a child."My special diet was bologna. I grew up with bologna," Katzman said.He didn't get a big party, but the veteran said being alive and able to continue his passion for helping veterans every day makes him happy he's turning 100.This story was originally published by Jordan Betts at KSHB. 1261

PETA wants to make sure a bunch of lobsters killed in a vehicle wreck last week in Maine aren't forgotten. The animal rights group, formally known as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, sent a letter to the Maine Department of Transportation asking for permission to install a 5-foot tombstone for the deceased crustaceans along a highway in Brunswick. That's where a local seafood distributor's truck -- loaded with about 70 crates of lobsters -- overturned, CNN affiliate WGME reports, spilling thousands of them onto the roadway."It was something I've never seen before," Brunswick police Detective William Moir told the station. "Some lobsters were loose on the ground from being spilled over so we went to work to save the ones we could."The requested memorial would feature a picture of a lobster with the words "In Memory of the lobsters who suffered and died at this spot, August 2018." It would also urge people to "Try Vegan.""Countless sensitive crustaceans experienced an agonizing death when this truck rolled over and their bodies came crashing down onto the highway," PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in a statement.?"PETA hopes to pay tribute to these individuals who didn't want to die with a memorial urging people to help prevent future suffering by keeping lobsters and all other animals off their plates."On Thursday, the state Department of Transportation turned down PETA's request, citing safety concerns.?In a letter?to PETA, Jim Billings, the department's chief counsel, said development and signs of all types are prohibited along controlled-access highways such as US 1."Control-of-access areas may have a very high volume of car and truck traffic as well as a high speed limit that could create a potential hazard to motorists should development and signs be allowed in these sections," Billings wrote. And Ted Talbot, the department's spokesman, also said PETA's plans wouldn't fly because it seemed like the animal rights group was seeking a permanent memorial, and that's not permissible under state law. Roadside memorials in Maine can only stay up for 12 weeks and can't be taller than 4 feet, he said.PETA is reassessing its options and will seek other ways "to reach the people of Maine," spokeswoman Amber Canavan told CNN. 2314

OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) – A growing number of locals who trying to make it in San Diego are flying out of the Tijuana International Airport to save money on airline tickets. In only its third year of service, San Diego's Cross Border Xpress, or “CBX”, is soaring in sales. “You can save so much money by traveling out of CBX,” said Luis Palacios, CBX's Chief Commercial Officer. The pedestrian bridge in Otay Mesa goes over the border and into the Tijuana airport. It’s located about 20 minutes south of downtown San Diego. San Diegan Arun Srinivasan uses CBX to fly to business meetings in Mexico. “It’s essentially like having a second airport in San Diego that just costs less,” Srinivasan said. “Every roundtrip flight, I've saved three to four hundred dollars.” RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Local cities among top in the U.S. for staycations Srinivasan said CBX also saves him time. “[Departing from] San Diego, I have to connect through LAX or San Francisco." From the Tijuana airport, there are 35 nonstop flights throughout Mexico and two to China. Security is a concern for some travelers. A 2019 report ranked Tijuana as the most dangerous city in the world. Palacios said CBX puts safety first. “It’s totally secure. PHOENIX - Latest polling numbers released from the Secretary of State’s office shows Kyrsten Sinema has taken a slight lead over Martha McSally in the race for Arizona Senate. As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sinema has 916,380 votes statewide, while McSally has 914,369.345,000 votes remain uncounted in Maricopa County while a small number of ballots remain uncounted as well in smaller counties.Officials estimate about 195,000 of those are early ballots, provisional, and out-of-precinct ballots that voters cast or dropped off on Election Day.It is one of the most-watched races across the country: will Martha McSally, a Republican, or Kyrsten Sinema, a Democrat, serve as Arizona's first congresswoman? Both are vying to fill Sen. Jeff Flake's seat after Flake's announcement in 2017 that he would not seek re-election.As preliminary results started to come in Tuesday evening, the two appeared to be in a dead heat with both flip-flopping for the lead. Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes expects ballot counting to continue for several days. Officials will continue to update the results daily at 5 p.m. 1144
