SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As coronavirus cases increase across the country, there is a concern about staffing in hospitals across Southern California.Not only are hospitals dealing with patients they typically see during this time of year, COVID-19 patients are adding stress to thinning resources.“If these trends continue, we’re going to have to much more dramatic—arguably drastic—action,” said Governor Gavin Newsom during a news conference on Monday.Currently, 74 percent of ICU beds are occupied in Southern California. State health officials protect it to be at 107 percent capacity by December 24th.“I have a guarded concern about the direction that we’re moving in,” said nurse practitioner Samantha Gambles Farr of the rising cases.Gambles Farr said she is not only worried about staffing numbers, but also the physical and mental health of her colleagues. “The staffing issues have always been something that we've dealt with in the ICU because of the critical acuteness of our patients and the burnout of staff,” she said. ‘In these unprecedented times with COVID in the pandemic, what we're seeing is that nurses are picking up a lot more overtime and shifts.”Early in the pandemic, the state created the California Health Corps. It asked for those with health care experience to help during the COVID-19 outbreak. Thousands, including retired workers and nursing students, volunteered to help. However, only 900 people are currently ready to be deployed, according to a recent story by the Sacramento Bee.In New York. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Before the sun rose Friday, cars already packed parking lots at San Diego beaches to kick off Labor Day weekend and what's expected to the some of the hottest days of summer.However, San Diego County leaders said no matter where you are this weekend, they want to emphasize people must still follow CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19.ABC 10News was at La Jolla Shores on Friday morning as beachgoers wearing masks secured spots far enough to stay socially distanced.Beachgoer and Santee resident Kris Moberly, “We know we can find a spot if we come early."It's the new norm, but also a way to ensure San Diego stays off the state's watchlist after just getting off of it two weeks ago.Moberly said she hopes everyone will follow the rules this weekend, telling ABC 10News, "I'm sure there's people who push the limits but you're responsible for your own health and I think most people are considerate of others."San Diego Lifeguards said they won't be regulating when it comes to social distancing or masks."We're going to be focused on keeping people safe in the water, but social distancing is everyone's responsibility,” a lifeguard told ABC 10News.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the status of our county depends on people's actions this weekend. In a press conference earlier this week, he said people should avoid indoor parties and continue to follow CDC guidelines.To ensure added safety, beaches like Carlsbad will also be handing out masks and teaching visitors about safety guidelines.Lifeguards said in addition to COVID-19 restrictions, the heat will also be a big safety factor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Black history in San Diego goes back hundreds of years, but a unique aspect specific to the area is a historic building that no longer stands. At the intersection of Market and 2nd in downtown, there is a small plaque on the ground. This marker is all that’s left of the historic Hotel Douglas, a place founded in the Roaring 20s that became an icon for the area.George Ramsey founded Hotel Douglas in 1924 as a place for the black community. During this time, segregation was prevalent, and many hotels were whites-only. Ramsey created the hotel as a way to give a space and economic boost to black people.“He had the idea of creating a black hotel. When I say black hotel I mean a hotel run by black people, owned by black people, employing black people, serving black people,” said David Miller, a history professor who also works with the San Diego History Center.Miller said the hotel became a famous spot because of the nightclub inside that drew in many famous black performers, including Bessie Smith and Duke Ellington, who would stop on their way to shows in neighboring major cities.“San Diego was a stopover point so the club in the hotel became a center for black performers and in fact became dubbed the Harlem of the west,” said Miller.The hotel no longer stands, but the plaque marks the history it represents. Miller said this history, similar to other major black history days like Juneteenth, is important to know and understand to grow as a society.“It’s a chance to truth tell and to learn about not necessarily a moment in history but a moment in history that illustrates the ongoing nature of making freedom and navigating what freedom means now as free people,” he said.The San Diego History Center will reopen to the public July 4, 2020 after closures due to coronavirus. There are also resources available online to learn more about local history. The museum will also have an exhibit on Nathan Harrison, a legendary African American San Diego homesteader, in spring 2021. The display was delayed due to COVID-19. 2067

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Biomedical technician, engineering and phlebotomy are just some of the programs MiraCosta College offered free for fall 2020 for Oceanside residents, thanks to Hire Local."The intent was to train up Oceanside residents for in-demand jobs, in Oceanside, in our companies that pay competitive wages."Hire Local was funded by federal approved grants, and was created by the City of Oceanside and MiraCosta College."We saw it as a win-win because it helps our residents find meaningful careers while creating a talent pipeline for our businesses, so they can stay here and grow here," described Michelle Gellar, with the City of Oceanside.Michelled added the program helped people who lost their jobs amid COVID-19 get back on their feet."We're doing our best to help our businesses navigate through this tough time.
