Experts say those feeling the pain of the financial crisis the most are millennials. The generation has missed major milestones that past generations enjoyed in their 30’s and 40’s as a result of dealing with two major financial crises over the past decade.However, it may not be all gloom and doom for millennials. The economic cycles the generation has experienced early on could lead them to understand the economy and markets better, potentially leveraging that to greater future gains.Many millennials graduated and entered the workforce during the 2008 Great Recession. They were just hitting their prime, and then, this pandemic and a second major financial crisis hit.“It just feels not only like we can’t catch a break, but we can’t even get started without something coming along and taking away a lot of what we worked for,” said Erin Lowry.Erin Lowry is an author and wrote the books “Broke Millennial” and “Broke Millennial Takes on Investing”.“The big thing to consider for your financial future is this will be temporary,” said Lowry. "We are going to get through this just like we got through ’08.”Surveys conducted by the Urban Institute show at least 1 in 3 millennials are struggling financially right now, and millennials as a whole have less acclimated wealth at this stage in life than the prior generation. To change that, even during this recession, Lowry believes there are a few key things millennials can do.“You do want to think about doing, and I hesitate to say it like this, but the least damage currently,” said Lowry.She recommends minimizing the amount of debt you may need to take on to get through this economic downturn. Also, protect your credit scores as much as possible by making on-time payments.Pay the minimum if needed or contact your lenders to work out agreements that will not show missed payments on your credit report. In the future, you’ll want a healthy credit score to be able to qualify for mortgage loans or auto loans at a lower interest rate.Lastly, try to still contribute to your retirement plan even if it’s a little bit. If you are in a position where every penny counts right now, think about a time in the near future when you can start to again invest. That is important because, historically, the market will rebound.To recover on a better financial footing, you want to buy when the market is low, or down, and reap the gains as the economy recovers.“After 2008, we went on to have one of the longest bull runs in stock market history,” said Lowry. "We don’t know what is going to happen after the coronavirus recession, but you don’t want to miss out on potentially huge returns.”The possible advantage of going through two recessions early in life may be a better understanding of the economy and a stronger desire to understand the market, along with learning how to use the downturn as an opportunity for future gains. 2896
ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Plans are underway to reinvigorate Escondido's historic downtown, with new businesses and plans to make the area more pedestrian friendly. One of the new ventures is the first-of-its-kind. "Escondido now has really started to invest a lot of time, a lot of effort, and they're putting a lot of money into the downtown district," said Nick Corona, a nationally recognized homebrewer who lives in San Marcos.When Corona started homebrewing in 2012, the dream was always to start a brewery, which he named Five Suits Brewing. Now that dream is coming true in a way he couldn't have envisioned back then. "We're looking to hopefully become a little bit more of a draw for Escondido."The plan is to house four different businesses under one roof, three of which are craft beverage manufacturers: beer, gin, and mead.The gin distillery is Stoke Distilling Co. and the meadery is Good Omen. "Nobody else in California and I don't even think in the U.S., has a storefront place that you can go to that has a brewery, a winery, and a distillery, with a restaurant all in the same location," said Brian LaMere, Owner of Good Omen.The owners of Carlsbad's Notorious Burgers will be supplying the food, which will consist of craft tacos and Mexican street food. The project is still waiting on approval from the alcohol and beverage agencies, but Corona says they've identified a 14,000 sq/ft property on Grand Ave. "It will be a destination, there's no doubt about it," said Corona. As far as making downtown more friendly to pedestrians, city planners say there are plans to widen the sidewalks, create more parking, and add art. (KGTV) - A young San Diego security officer says she faced retaliation after reporting sexual harassment to her employer, Escondido’s Palomar Medical Center.She spoke exclusively with 10News about her experience. The hospital will not discuss the details with 10News, but reports it takes matters like this seriously.The woman and her attorneys are now suing the hospital and the supervisor who she accused of sexual misconduct.10News was asked to withhold the identity of the woman who filed the sexual harassment claim.In a recent emotional interview, she said, “I'm helping my dad with my sister so if I lose my job [I] don't see how I’ll be able to financially support my family.”Attorney Anna Yum with Gilleon Law Firm is representing the woman. Yum told us, “Every worst nightmare that she could have anticipated [has] happened.”Yum said the woman was working as a security officer at Palomar Medical Center when her supervisor kissed her, but it was not welcomed.Yum added that the supervisor is a former police officer who is nearly twice her age. Yum’s client told us, “He said, ‘Just please don't say anything. I’ll be sure that you get that lead position that you applied for.’”The woman explained that she agreed and told him, “I won't say anything,” and, “Just, please. I want to leave.”She said she did not report it at the time because she was concerned about retaliation. She was promoted, but said he continued to make her uncomfortable with his comments and would hug her on several occasions.Due to her anxiety and stress, the lawsuit reports she took a medical leave of absence. Late last year she claimed he tried to kiss her again.“He told me, ‘If you do go to HR, I'll make sure you lose your job.’ Now that I’m experiencing all this with HR, it's like surreal,” she added.She reported the harassment in a letter to HR on February 15th, 2018, she told us. Yet she said it wasn’t until almost two weeks later that HR opened an investigation into the matter.By that time, she hired Yum as her lawyer and wanted Yum present at her meetings with HR. However, Yum claims that HR refused to let her have an attorney present for the meetings.HR reportedly wrote to her on March 27th, 2018, reiterating that the hospital “would have to conduct the investigation without [her] input, which is obviously not preferred.”According to Yum, “They said, ‘Well, we couldn't corroborate because [the client] refused to cooperate with us,’ which is the furthest thing from the truth.” The letter goes on to explain that since she refused to do an interview without her attorneys, HR, “…concluded the investigation without [her] input."Yum says her client was then notified that she was getting demoted under the false pretense that it was her client's idea to step down, not the hospital's idea.Yum says that continued retaliation unfolded. Her client tells 10News that on March 30th, 2018, she received a letter from HR placing her on immediate investigatory leave so the hospital could “review an alleged security incident” from three days earlier while she was “on duty as the lead security officer”.Yum has called it a sham investigation. She says her client knows nothing about a security incident that happened on her watch.“This is so classic. This is exactly why women don't want to come forward,” Yum told us. Yum and her client are now suing the hospital for sexual harassment and retaliation, among other complaints.They're also suing the accused harasser, who we are not naming, as he has not been charged with a crime. Both he and the hospital declined our interview requests.A statement from Palomar Medical Center reads, “Although Palomar Health cannot comment on pending legal matters, please be assured that we take all complaints of discrimination in the workplace seriously, including the complaint at issue. We are also not at liberty to discuss any of the details of our investigations into workplace misconduct due to the privacy rights of the employees involved.”“They don't want to have anything to do with me, I feel. I feel like they've already chosen their side and their truth,” Yum’s client told us. He makes his living as a glassblower and certainly knows what it's like to feel the heat."When it comes to August, it will get to 125 degrees in here," says Stone, referencing the studio where he creates his work. However, he is used to it, as he has been blowing glass for quite some time, in fact, he says he was destined to be a glassblower "I always like to start by telling people that I was born in Flushing Hospital in Flushing, New York. I was delivered by Dr. Glass," Stone says.James became interested in glassblowing in the 1980s, after taking some classes at Palomar College. He said it didn't take long before he was hooked."It's the flame, the flame, the flame is life, and the first time you get around the flame you can't get away from it," Stone said.His creations are simply mind-blowing. The colors and shapes are all beautiful works of art. "When I began in 1986, if you didn't know the formula, to take sand and then make sand into glass, you didn't blow glass," he says.But just like many other professions, the glassblowing industry has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic."It's broken my heart , oh my god it's broken my heart. COVID has changed my business, it's changed the way we do business. We usually have classes of 6 to 10 people, but because of COVID, those classes are all gone," said Stone.So in order to keep his business alive, Stone & Glass has started a "Collectors Club.""This is the first edition," James says while holding up two drinking glasses.
