Music can move the soul.Learning to carry a tune or play a chord can be a much-needed break from reality“Certainly, it helps people to heal in more than one way,” said Ty Hughes, music director at School of Rock Denver. He’s been teaching students online since the pandemic hit.“A lot of people are inspired to teach themselves a new skill or rather to work on a new skill, and take up a lot of the time they’re finding they have on their hands during these troubled times here,” he said.Recently, Hughes’ student base has grown from children to an older audience.“I’ve had at least about 75% more adults show up on my schedule these days,” he said.People like health care worker Janae Martinez, who started playing her guitar again while staying safe a home“It was very therapeutic for me in general,” she said of playing music. “So, I knew that I needed it again during the pandemic.”The mother of two says practicing playing helps her focus on things other than the virus.“It heals. It quiets my mind,” Martinez said. “It eases my soul if you will.”With more adults taking music lessons and picking up other hobbies during the pandemic, mental health experts say these activities can help the mind and body.“The feeling that I think some people had at the beginning of the pandemic is like, ‘everything is going to hell. How can I make the best of this,’” said Sean Ransom, Ph.D., clinical director at the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Center of New Orleans. He says if things someone enjoys are taken away, like many were during the COVID-19 crisis, it helps to find something else that brings meaning into their life.“Hobbies have their own benefit that bring us a sense of accomplishment,” Ransom said. “They bring us a sense of growth.”While an online experience might not be enough for some people who prefer more social interaction, there’s still benefits from this type of training.“It’s been an adjustment but that’s what music has always been about is adapting to the times,” Hughes saidHe added that it’s never too late to learn something new.”Music is the healing answer,” Hughes said. ”Music is the magic. That’s what we’re going to keep going at.” 2169

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - The city of National City set a record in the 2019 Fiscal Year for the amount of grant money they received to pay for road upgrade projects.According to information provided to 10News, National City got around million for what they call "Active Transportation" projects."If we don't get these grants, we're basically just doing roadway maintenance for the next year," says City Engineer Steve Manganiello. The grants will pay for a long list of projects focused on improving bike lanes and pedestrian walkways throughout National City. This comes as cities all across San Diego work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by emphasizing alternative forms of transporation over driving."We need to give people that don't have acces to vehicles a safe network to bike, to walk and to use transit," says Manganiello. "I think we're well on our way."The city won 14 competitive grants in fiscal year 2018-19, which ends July 1. City Manager Brad Raulston says a unique combination of cooperation, need and preparation made it happen."We're the right size in terms of being small enough that we collaborate well," says Raulston. "We all work closely together. But we're also big enough that we have the resources to make matching funds.""Although we're a relatively small city, we are big in the amount of infrastructure and capital needs," says Raulston. The grants they won and the projects funded include:- Bayshore Bikeway - .4 million (Caltrans)- Central Community Bicycle Corridor - .3 million (Caltrans)- Citywide Bicycle Wayfinding Signage - 0,000 (Caltrans)- Citywide Traffic Signal Upgrades - .4 million (Caltrans)- 8th Street & Roosevelt Avenue Corridors - .2 million (Caltrans); .1 million (SANDAG)- 30th Street/Sweetwater Road Bicycle Corridor - .5 million (SANDAG)- Division Street Bicycle Corridor - 0,000 (SANDAG)- National City Boulevard Inter-City Bicycle Corridor - 0,000 (SANDAG)- Citywide Bicycle Parking Enhancements - ,000 (SANDAG)- 24th Street Transit Oriented Development Overlay - 0,000 (SANDAG)- Waterfront to Homefront Connectivity Study - 0,00 (SANDAG)- Paradise Creek Park Expansion - 0,000 & 0,000 (California Natural Resouces Agency)That money will be on top million worth of projects the city has completed over the last 5 years. They hope to complete another million in the next three."Fiscal Year 2020 is going to be the year of design," says Manganiello. "Fiscal Year 2021 is going to be the year of construction." 2535
Nearly 100 migrants will be deported following an incident Sunday in which hundreds of people rushed the US-Mexico border, Mexican authorities say.About 500 migrants on the Mexican side of the border overwhelmed police blockades near the San Ysidro Port of Entry on Sunday, two journalists in Tijuana told CNN. US Customs and Border Protection, which said that as many as 1,000 people tried to enter the US illegally, said the migrants threw projectiles that struck several US Border Patrol agents.Agents fired tear gas at the group. Video of the scene showed a cloud of tear gas that sent people running and screaming, including families with young children. The incident forced a temporary closure of the major border crossing into San Diego. 751
