SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pacific Beach mother Sandy Algra says her number one job is keeping her child safe, something she wasn’t able to do a few months ago.Algra and her 3-year-old son were at Liberty Station Park when he was scratched by a dirty needle, sending him to the emergency room. Algra says he underwent an infectious disease consultation and will require HIV and Hepatitis C tests every six months.“Right now I’m trying to channel and redirect the anger that I feel about what happened to him, that I wasn’t able to keep him safe," said Algra.She's created a petition to designate San Diego’s playgrounds for children only; adults are only allowed if they’re accompanied by a child.Similar ordinances already exist in New York and Florida, people who violate them can face fines. "I think that most people can use common sense and understand that an adult is not meant to be living under a slide, or sitting on a swing doing drugs or otherwise, that's not what these playgrounds are designed for," said Algra. The petition has over 1,000 signatures and has garnered support from the Pacific Beach Planning Group and Pacific Beach Town Council.Algra plans to eventually bring the petition to San Diego City Council. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One man is dead and another person was injured after two separate shootings just miles apart early Saturday.The first shooting occurred in the Lincoln Park area before 3:30 a.m. near Euclid and Imperial avenues. A suspect wearing dark clothing reportedly shot at a group of transients, according to San Diego Police.One person was hit by debris from the gunshot and taken to the hospital as a precaution.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodA second shooting occurred about two miles away, an officer patrolling Mountain View heard gunshots around the same time. He arrived to find a man lying on the ground on South 45th Street, near Willy Henderson Sports Complex.The Hispanic man in his 20s to 30s was shot multiple times and died at the scene, police said. His identity has not been released.Police are searching for a white Volkswagon seen in the area by witnesses following the shooting. Police said there is no indication the shooting is gang-related.Police received calls about both shootings around the same time but said there is nothing to suggest the two are connected. 1153

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 3,000 street lights in San Diego is expected to get ‘eyes and ears’ by the end of the month.Last year, the city announced that they would be retrofitting 3,200 street lights with smart technology.RELATED: Smart street lights coming to San Diego Nearly 3,000 of the “sensor packages” have been installed on existing street lights according to David Graham, Deputy Chief Operating Officer for Smart & Sustainable Communities.  However, they have not yet been activated.The technology on the street lights has a sort of camera and microphone.While it may seem a little “Big Brother-ish” to some, Graham assures the public they won’t be used for spying. The cameras and sensors would only collect data on parking, traffic congestion, and pedestrian safety.
