HONG KONG, July 20 (Xinhua) -- A photo exhibition opened here Monday to mark the 30 anniversary of the establishment of China-U.S. diplomatic relations.     The nearly 300 photos on display range in time from as far back as the voyage to China of the American trading ship Empress of China in 1784, to the G-20 Summit in London this year. TEL AVIV, Israel, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Israeli President Shimon Peres Thursday lauded the great achievements made by China over the past 60 years when attending a reception held by Chinese Embassy in Israel to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     At the reception held at the residence of Chinese Ambassador to Israel Zhao Jun, Peres stressed that China currently plays an important role in the world.     He said that due to the great achievements made by China over the past 60 years, Chinese people are now becoming more affluent and confident, noting that "Israel loves China."     Highlighted the important role China is playing in the world, Peres said that "a peaceful China is a peaceful world."     Before Peres' speech, Zhao said that the reception was also held to celebrate the 17th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Israel.     China has made remarkable achievements over the years, said the Chinese ambassador, adding that despite the progress, China remains a developing country and will continue its development.     He added that the relationship between China and Israel is continuing to develop in many fields, while China is now Israel's biggest trading partner in Asia.     Zhao also mentioned the "Experience China in Israel" event, which will be held in October in Israel in a bid to show the development of China in many domains: education, economy, technology and especially the Chinese contemporary culture.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's railways carried 60.75 million passengers nationwide around the seven days of National Day holidays and one day of Mid-Autumn Festival, the Ministry of Railways said on Friday.     The figure was 2.18 million more or 3.7 percent up from the same period last year, according to the ministry.     The peak transport season lasted for eleven days from Sept. 28 to Oct. 8. As the National Day holidays are about to end, the railway transportation witnessed a travel peak all over the nation. China's railways carried a record high of 6.93 million people nationwide on Oct. 1, the National Day. The previous record was set on Oct. 5 in 2008 when China's railways carried 6.48 million passengers.     This year, China's National Day holidays and the Mid-Autumn Festival, a key festival in China for family re-union, overlapped. More people working far away from home chose to go back for family re-union in the eight-day holidays.

BEIJING, Aug. 5 -- Chinese steel mills would prefer to import more iron ore from Brazil rather than Australia after the detention of four Shanghai-based employees of multinational miner Rio Tinto on charges of commercial espionage, according to data specialist ASXMarine. Spot iron ore vessel bookings from Brazil to China surged to a record 39 in July, from 24 in the previous month, Reuters quoted the data from ASXMarine.     Vessel bookings from Australia's main iron ore ports to China dropped to 31, down from 40 compared to the previous month and the lowest reading since February after the Rio Tinto scandal. Office in Shanghai, east China.    Chinese steelmakers have begun to hold their imports from Australian miners and are switching to Brazilian ore instead, domestic ports have witnessed.     Zang Dongsheng, deputy general manger of Rizhao Port Group, China's largest iron ore port which accounts for a fifth of the country's iron ore deliveries, said some of his customers have reduced their orders from Australia and turned to Brazil. But the exact figures would be available only in September as shipments from Brazil and Australia would be delayed by one or two months.     China's main ports received 56.5 million tons of iron ore in July, up 35 percent from the same period last year, the Ministry of Transport said yesterday.     Iron ore imports rose 29.3 percent year on year, to 297 million tons, in the first half of this year, while traders imported 131 million tons, up 90.4 percent from last year.     The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said last Friday that excess iron ore imports had distorted the demand-supply situation and hampered its position at negotiations with global miners on new long-term benchmark prices.     It also said foreign iron ore suppliers promoted massive selling on the cash market, leading to huge stockpiles and urged to limit import licenses.     However, the iron ore import figures in July reflected orders in May as it takes more than a month to deliver ore from Australia and Brazil, said Zang from Rizhao port.     Chinese steel mills started to reduce orders ever since CISA rejected the 33-percent cut offered by miners in May and held out for more discount, he said.     China News Service reported yesterday that CISA halted talks because iron ore spot prices have been "seriously distorted", citing a statement issued by the association.     However, no such statement could be found on the association's website, and its official surnamed Wang said the report was not true and talks were ongoing.

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- China contributed 19.2 percent of the world economic growth in 2007, up from 2.3 percent in 1978, a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said. It said China tops the world in contribution to the global economic growth.     The report was the 18th by the NBS. It showcased the improving international status and influence of new China over years of development.     According to the NBS, China's gross domestic product (GDP) was 30 billion U.S. dollars in 1952, more than doubling by 1960, and reached 3.86 trillion U.S. dollars in 2008.     China had also become the world's third largest economy in 2008 by accounting for 6.4 percent of the global GDP.     Meanwhile, the country's gross national income (GNI) per capital has been catching up with the world average. The GNI per capita was 10.1 percent of the world average in 1978, and 32.3 percent in2008.     In terms of GNI per capita ranking among 209 countries and regions by the World Bank, China was 130th in 2008 at 2,770 U.S. dollars, up 15 places compared 750 U.S. dollars in 1997.
