SAN DIEGO — A San Diego-based stem cell research institute believes its discovery may have saved the life of a COVID patient on death's doorstep.GIOSTAR infused a 53-year-old man in a coma with Mesenchymal stem-cells taken from an umbilical cord. Prior to that, all other treatments were failing. "He was having a stroke, he was under dialysis, liver function was declining," said Dr. Anand Srivastava, co-founder of GIOSTAR. "Nothing was working."The patient, whose identity is not being released due to privacy laws, had been in a coma in a New Jersey hospital. GIOSTAR got special clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to try the stem-cell treatment. Srivastava said the patient began to recover, gradually over three weeks. "Slowly, his renal and liver function came closer to normal," he said. "He came out from the intubation, and now he is talking."The family, in an interview with GIOSTAR, said they had lost all hope. Srivastava said this treatment could be key as society awaits a vaccine. GIOSTAR is planning to do a double-blind study to confirm its conclusions about its treatment. SAN DIEGO — The Barbusa Restaurant in the heart of Little Italy is filled with famous guests, so to speak.Celebrity cutouts of the likes of Tommy Lasorda and the late James Gandolfini take up seats at tables closed for social distancing.“It's something just cute, and it makes people just feel comfortable,” Co-owner Joey Busalacchi says.Busalacchi put them there to help make the reopening more festive. Of course, he’d rather have real people in those tables - but can't because of coronavirus restrictions.The restaurant’s normal capacity is about 160, but had to be reduced to 120.That all changed Saturday night - when the Little Italy Association arranged for India Street to be closed to vehicle traffic - allowing restaurants to expand into the street.The extra space meant restaurants, already on razor thin margins, could serve their normal customer load.Barbusa was filled, serving up to 160 patrons.“Covid's not going away for a while, so the more we could get people to eat outdoors the better,” said Marco Li Mandri, the Little Italy Association’s Chief Executive Administrator.Li Mandri says the event was a major success, with good social distancing practices.The association will do it again this Saturday - with even more restaurants open - and could expand it even more in the future.Additionally, the Gaslamp Quarter Association announced on-street dining on Fifth Avenue starting Thursday.The city is also currently weighing a request from the North Park Main Street Association for dining on a stretch of 30th Street near University. 1563

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 20-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a voluntary manslaughter charge for last year's fatal beating of a 56-year-old man near a pedestrian bridge behind Petco Park was sentenced Friday to six years in state prison.Dominick Wells admitted his role in the Nov. 18, 2018, beating of Edward Starlard, who was left comatose as a result of the attack by Wells and a group of juveniles.Three of the juveniles involved were also charged in juvenile court, with at least two of the minors pleading guilty so far, according to prosecutors.Witnesses said Starlard had been fighting with a group of young people the afternoon of Nov. 18 when he was thrown down and beaten unconscious, suffering injuries that included fractures to his face and ribs. When witnesses started yelling at the attackers to stop, they fled east on Imperial Avenue, police said.Starlard was placed on life support and never regained consciousness. He died Dec. 3 at Scripps Mercy Hospital.A cell phone video recorded by a bystander captures Starlard, Wells and the juveniles exchanging words, none of which can be heard in the video. At some point, both men grab objects to seemingly defend themselves. Wells picks up a broomstick, while Starlard lifts a bicycle over his head.Starland later tosses the bike to the ground, and is then knocked down to the sidewalk by Wells and the juveniles, who begin punching and kicking him.A medical examiner testified that Starlard's death was the result of a heart attack, which could have been caused by stress or trauma from the fight.Prosecutor Mary Loeb asked San Diego County Superior Court Judge Amalia L. Meza to impose the maximum possible term of 11 years, stating that Wells had multiple opportunities to withdraw from the altercation, but chose instead to attack Starlard even after he put the bike down, then beat him while he was helpless on the ground.She also said that while both men bore responsibility for their roles in the argument, Wells landed the first blow, and only stopped when bystanders intervened."There was no indication that this was going to stop except for people running across the street, seeing what was happening and yelling at the defendant and his friends to stop," Loeb said, which highlighted "the viciousness of this attack."Wells' attorney, Stewart Dadmun, said his client rightfully defended himself against Starlard, who was attacking him, but was guilty of manslaughter for responding with excessive force.Dadmun said the altercation was sparked by Starlard making a lewd comment toward one of Wells' friends, a 14-year-old girl, then threatened to attack Wells and the teens.The attorney said that while the prosecutor noted Wells could have walked away, "It's also worth pointing out that a 56-year-old man could have walked away."Dadmun also noted Wells' young age and lack of prior criminal record in asking for a three-year prison term.Meza said she understood both men played a role in the fight, but said Wells responded with force that was "excessive, brutal and unnecessary when the victim was trying to retreat," and imposed the mid-term of six years.Wells was previously charged with murder in the attack, but that charge was dismissed when he entered his guilty plea in September. SAN DIEGO — Two of San Diego's biggest restaurant groups are sounding the alarm over state Coronavirus regulations.Owners of the Brigantine Family of Restuarants and the Cohn Restaurant Group say indoor capacity limits aren't sustainable. Currently, a restaurant can only seat 25 percent of its capacity indoors. “If we stay open and as we enter the fall and winter months, our restaurants cannot survive on 25 percent," said Leslie Cohn, of the Cohn restaurant group.The Cohn Group spent more than 0,000 creating social distancing in 16 of its restaurants - before the 25 percent capacity limit was instituted. Their employment is now down 40 percent to about 1,200 workers.“We should be concentrating on positive test percentages, hospital capacity, ICU and PPE availability and of course mask wearing, social distancing and employee screening,” Cohn said.Her frustrations, echoed by Mike Morton, who heads the Brigantine Family of Restaurants, where employment is off 20 percent to 1,000 workers. Morton said there are now waits every Friday, Saturday and Sunday - due to the capacity restraints.“Guests are going to get tired of that, and what else is that going to do? It allows us to employ less people due to limited capacity,” Morton said.The 25 percent cap will last at least another three weeks.
