SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - PhaseBio, a company based out of San Diego and Pennsylvania, announced it would be starting a clinical trial for a drug that could help keep severe COVID-19 patients from needing a ventilator. “If you are infected with coronavirus and you’re admitted to hospital, we’re trying to catch those patients before they have a rapid decline and prevent intubation or other more severe complications of the coronavirus,” said Jonathan Mow, CEO of PhaseBio. The drug is called PB1046 and is a “novel, once-weekly, subcutaneously-injected vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) receptor.” It was originally being researched for use on patients with high blood pressure, said Mow. But they pivoted when they realized it might have properties that could help prevent acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a potentially deadly condition caused by the inflammation of the lungs due to the body’s immune response to the coronavirus. “We realized that the characteristics of our drug fit nicely to what we would want to control in the complications in coronavirus patients,” said Mow. The clinical trial will take place at 20 different locations and involve about 210 subjects who have been hospitalized and require oxygen, but have not been intubated. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One person is dead after being struck by an Amtrak train near the Sorrento Valley train station Saturday afternoon, the San Diego Sheriff's Department said.Amtrak has called this a "trespasser incident." Pacific Surfliner trains 583 and 785 are severely delayed, Amtrak reported. The medical examiner is on the scene, and San Diego Police and sheriff's deputies are investigating the incident.No other details are available at this time. This is a developing story. 10News will update as information becomes available.   572

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People looking to buy a new or used car may have to hurry if they want to take advantage of the Coronavirus Pandemic's best deals and discounts.Recent studies from the California New Car Dealers Association show that sales of new cars in San Diego were down by 18.6% in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same time of 2019. That's better than the state average of 21% but still worrisome for the industry.President Paul Dyke says his dealership saw sales drop in the 10-15% range at El Cajon Ford. But he says the company did a great job of offering deals to bring people into the lots, such as low-interest financing, long term payment plans, and lower prices."Zero percent is always something that gets people moving," says Dyke. "Now for the first time in Ford's history, doing it at 84 months on quite a few of the models really kept things going."The CNDCA says the Pandemic forced the industry to readjust its outlook for the year. They now predict new car sales to reach about 1.5 million in 2020, down from 2.1 million in 2019. If sales stay slow, it could be the worst year for new car sales since the Great Recession.Meanwhile, used cars are flooding the market as rental companies upgrade their fleet.Hertz recently filed for bankruptcy. The company iSeeCars.com did a study on their prices and found that Hertz was offering sales discounts in May that were 43% greater than the discounts they offered in April."There are still plenty of deals to be had," says Amada Lasik from iSeeCars.com. "That's especially true for cars that have been lingering on lots for a while, so we invite consumers to do as much research as they can."Manheim, a company that does used car auctions across the country, says used cars have been staying on lots for longer than usual. According to their data, almost 64% of used cars sold within 30 days back in February. By March, that number had dropped to 53%. The longer a car stays on the lot, the more likely a dealer will offer it at a lower price.Manheim also found that used car sales were down 34% in April compared to 2019, while wholesale used car prices dropped more than 11%.All that being said, experts believe these numbers will bounce back over the summer as restrictions ease.Dyke says his most significant concern for the industry is inventory. Since factories were closed for several months during the Pandemic, dealerships won't have as many cars to sell in July and August.Dyke says the companies will raise prices and eliminate the deals as demand increases while supply dwindles. 2574

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- October is HIV/AIDS Awareness month…this year we find ourselves still in the grips of a different public health crisis.We’re highlighting the work of an organization born in the 1980’s to help LGBTQ people with HIV and AIDS.Auntie Helen’s in North Park is now meeting needs from the pandemic.10News Anchor Mary McKenzie shares the legacy of a man well-known for taking care of his community – then and now.In the late 80's Gary Cheatham founded Auntie Helen's -- in a one-car garage in North Park in 1988. He did fluff and fold laundry first for one, then for a handful of friends who were sick with AIDS.Fear and stigma at the time -- hurt the LGBT community as much as the disease. But word spread quickly -- about Gary's services -- and Auntie Helen's grew. Sadly, so did the disease... and more and more of Gary's friends and clients became sick... HIV and AIDS claimed more than 100 thousand lives in the U-S in the 1980's. Many of Gary's clients who died willed their estates to Auntie Helen's. Their belongings accumulated in Gary's garage, which was also where he did laundry -- and eventually, with help from a few high-powered friends and other activists, Gary opened Auntie Helen's thrift store in 1989.Rod Legg is now the executive director of Auntie Helen's -- which has come through some difficult times. The laundry service and the thrift store are still co-located in North Park. During the pandemic, they stretched their services to do laundry for a new group -- that needed help.“We also do COVID-19, which is our frontline medical workers. That's a tie into the past, we had to do that. We had to offer that.” explains Legg.They're also expanding the store, and their outreach. They give out free groceries to their regular clients (about 25-35 individuals) and now also to frontline workers. With COVID-19 leaving so many more people on hard times, they started delivering groceries - no questions asked, no referral needed. Rod found the food, and the volunteers delivered it. At one point, to more than 300 people.“This is everybody's HIV in a sense. Do you know what I mean? We don't know where we're at. We're all wondering what's going to happen the next day, but most importantly is neighbor to neighbor we need to make sure we're taking care of each other.” says, Rod Legg.Auntie Helen's staffs a "warm" line instead of a hot line with volunteers -- taking calls from people struggling with mental health issues. They offer yoga, meditation -- virtually for now -- and provide clients with addiction support and help with job hunting. All in keeping with the legacy of Gary Cheatham...Rod Legg remarked, “This man was way before his time. You know? And can you imagine the faces of the people that got the hugs, and the clothes?”A hero for the community, then and now...That's what we all should be doing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Neighborhoods near the Miramar Landfill are reporting a resurgence of awful odors they believe are coming from the landfill. "You come out the door in the morning and it just hits you," said Matty Wuest of University City. About a mile away, fellow resident Janis Deady concurs. "Like last night at in the morning," she says, "the smell woke me up out of a dead sleep." So, exactly what does it smell like? The distant neighbors are at no loss for words. "If you take the natural gas smell," said Matty, "Mix that with dog poop and vomit. That's what it smell like." Janis said she'd lived near the landfill for more than 20 years without an issue, but that changed about three years ago. "All of the sudden in the 2016 we started smelling putrid, disgusting, horrid smells."The distant neighbors say complaints in 2016 lead to hearings with the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District; resulting in fines for the City of San Diego and mitigation measures that appeared to solve the problem. But in recent weeks they say the smell is back."You shouldn't have to live like that," said Janis, "Not when we pay these taxes." A public information officer for San Diego said by phone the short story is the rain. That as soon as the Miramar Landfill has a chance to dry out from all the recent rains, the odors will dry up as well. But residents say that's not sufficient. "I hope the city would mitigate this and not blame it on the rain or other excuses." Said Matty. "Bottom line," said Janis, "It's got to stop. This is from 2016 to now.
