BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A leading Chinese government think tank Thursday forecast the country's 2010 economic growth would top the 8-percent target set by the central government by almost 2 percentage points.The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) forecast China's gross domestic product (GDP) would expand by 9.9 percent this year, 1.2 percentage points higher than last year's growth rate.Its forecast is higher than the 9.6-percent economic growth predicted by the Asian Development Bank earlier this month.Fixed assets investment would rise 33.3 percent year on year in 2010, said a blue book on China's 2010 economic prospects jointly released by the CASS and the Social Sciences Academic Press.The CASS said a slim chance existed of serious inflation in China this year with the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, growing within a moderate range.The book also said the government should make economic policies more flexible and better targeted over the rest of the year, while mapping out plans to withdraw stimulus measures gradually within the next two years without jeopardizing economic growth.China's GDP grew 11.9 percent year on year in the first quarter to 8.06 trillion yuan (1.19 trillion U.S. dollars) and fixed assets investment rose 25.6 percent to 3.53 trillion yuan during the same period.The country's CPI rose 2.4 percent year on year in March, below the government target limit of 3 percent.

BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States will not exclude China when it loosens its export restrictions, Yao Jian, a spokesman with the Ministry of Commerce said here Monday.Yao's remarks came after the United States said over the weekend it might change its exports control regime.The United States should treat all countries equally and not discriminate against China in its export policies, Yao said at a press conference.U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said in Hong Kong Sunday "concrete proposals" for changes in the exports control could be expected within the next several months.Locke said the review will help with "the sale of highly sophisticated technology that might be embedded in some of the machines and devices like wind turbines, and the software that might operate these very sophisticated systems."The United States' 1979 Export Administration Act limits the export sales of commercial high-technology goods to China. BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged the boosting of efforts to prevent and control the hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) nationwide as the illness re-emerges in parts of the country."Spring and summer is a peak period for infectious diseases. Currently, preventing and controlling various infectious diseases such as the hand-foot-mouth disease is a key task," Li said Wednesday at a meeting on a nationwide health campaign.At least five children died of HFMD and another 9,863 cases have been reported in central China's Henan Province as of March 23. The local government has asked kindergartens and schools across the province to step up health checks of children.Li urged the acceleration of research into vaccines and drugs for the disease and a focus on prevention and control work in rural areas for the most vulnerable groups.HFMD is a common illness mainly affecting children under the age of 10. It usually starts with a slight fever which is followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet. It is spread through contact with saliva or feces of the infected.Li stressed related departments across the country should step up work to prevent and control A/H1N1 influenza with emergency plans and ample storage of vaccines, drugs and equipment.Li added that major events, including the 2010 Shanghai Expo, will be the key events for disease control and prevention.

GUANGZHOU, April 18 (Xinhua) -- A research report of China's foreign trade sector Sunday predicted the world's largest exporter would more than double its foreign trade volume by 2020.It also called on China to improve the quality of foreign trade sector and to lower import tariffs to promote the nation's trade balance.The report, launched by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Sunday at the ongoing 107th China Import and Export Fair, the country's largest trade fair held in the southern city of Guangzhou, predicted the China's foreign trade volume would hit 5.3 trillion U.S. dollars by 2020.Merchandise exports will top other countries and be 2.4 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020, 10.1 percent of the world total, while imports will reach 1.9 trillion U.S. dollars and rank second largest, accounting for 8.2 percent of the world total, according to the report, jointly compiled by researchers with think-tanks under the MOC, the Ministry of Finance, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.The report was seen by analysts and officials as a "road map" which lays out a theoretical basis for the reforms in China's trade policies and mechanisms over the next decade.The transformation of the foreign trade growth pattern has become an urgent requirement for China in the post-crisis era, said Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan.Weighed on by the global downturn, China's foreign trade contracted to a three-decade low in 2009, with total volume down 13.9 percent year on year to 2.2 trillion U.S. dollars.Huo Jianguo, director of the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC) under the MOC, said the financial crisis has revealed a series of substantial problems hidden behind rosy figures, as the nation's foreign trade has been expanded in an ineffective and imbalanced way, or at the cost of environment pollution.Analysts said the downturn had prompted China to adjust its exports structure, and shift focus on high-end manufacturing, energy-saving and environment-friendly industries and developing modern service industries.Li Gang, a research fellow with the CAITEC and leading writer of the report, said the global downturn has phased out a number of backward and less competitive enterprises while offering great opportunities for innovative enterprises to improve growth structure and strengthen their anti-risk capabilities.Although China reported a a deficit of 7.24 billion U.S. dollars in March, the first time over the past six years, analysts suggested decision makers to further expand imports by lowering tariffs, as a way to ease the nation's trade imbalance.Zhang Peng, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said China should increase imports of high-tech equipments, energy and resource products, and some agriculture and consumption goods in an attempt to address the trade imbalance.The nation's trade surplus has reached 1.3 trillion U.S. dollars over the last three decades, with foreign exchange reserves hitting 2.45 trillion U.S. dollars by the end of March, according to Zhang.Propping up world's economy recovery, China's foreign trade began to grow again in the first quarter, jumping 44.1 percent to 617.85 billion U.S. dollars, according to customs data.China would consolidate its position as a big trade power and make efforts to develop into a strong trader, and it would play a more active role in international trade arena, according to Zhong Shan.
