SAN DIEGO (CNS and KGTV) - A former Team USA figure skater has filed suit against the U.S. Figure Skating Association and skating coach Richard Callaghan for allegedly sexually abusing the skater between 1999 and 2001, including at a skating competition held in San Diego.The suit, filed this week in San Diego County Superior Court, alleges that Callaghan sexually abused Adam Schmidt starting at the age of 14, even after reports surfaced alleging he had abused another skater.Callaghan -- perhaps best known for coaching Tara Lipinski to an Olympic gold medal in 1998 -- was accused of molesting another former skater, then-15-year-old Craig Maurizi, in a 1999 New York Times article.RELATED: Figure skater Ashley Wagner says she was sexually assaulted by a former coachSchmidt alleges that figure skating officials brought the article's allegations up for an internal review, but then dismissed the allegation "as it claimed the victim had not filed a formal written grievance within 60 days of the sexual misconduct perpetrated by (Callaghan)."Schmidt claims this system "made it nearly impossible for sexual abuse claimants to bring effective complaints forward against perpetrators of sexual abuse and misconduct."As he remained in good standing with skating officials, Schmidt alleges that Callaghan was able to continue abusing him over the course of three years, including at the 2001 Master of Figure Skating competition held in San Diego, when Schmidt was 16.Schmidt says the abuse has left him suffering from "psychological injuries and illnesses" as an adult, including a "psychological breakdown" and hospitalization in early 2017.Schmidt's attorney, John Manly, said "Our client is an extremely talented young athlete who dreamed of nothing more than to stand on an Olympic podium and hear our National Anthem. Instead, he had to stop competing in the sport he loved because of the sexual, physical and emotional damage done to him by his coach, Richard Callaghan."It started getting weird when he would leave his jacket, tie, and shirt on, but then take his suitepants and his underwear off," Schmidt told ABC News.The U.S. Figure Skating Association and the ice rinks where Callaghan worked ignored complaints around him for years. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A five-vehicle pileup at a College Area intersection left two young women severely injured and sent four others drivers to the hospital, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 70th Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 63-year-old man driving a 2016 Mercedes E400 eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of a 2015 Ford Fusion sitting in the northbound turn lane to 70th Street, Buttle said.The impact pushed both vehicles into the westbound lanes, where they were both struck by three vehicles -- a Nissan Rogue SUV, a BMW and a Honda Civic, the officer said. At that point, the Ford caught fire, leaving two 22-year-old women trapped inside before witnesses pulled them from the car.Both women suffered second- and third-degree burns over 70% of their bodies, along with uncontrolled internal bleeding, Buttle said. They were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were considered life-threatening.The Mercedes driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, Officer Tony Martinez said.The Nissan driver, a 20-year-old woman, the BMW driver, a 63-year-old man, and the Honda driver were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Buttle said.No details about the Honda driver were immediately available. 1427

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Utah Amber Alert has been activated for a 6-year-old boy who was abducted Saturday night.Investigators are looking for Terran Alexander Butler and his mother, 43-year-old Emily Jolley.Terran is Caucasian, 4 feet tall, 40 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing black gym shorts, hiking boots, and a green t-shirt with blue sleeves.Jolley is 5 feet 8 inches tall, 140 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. SAN DIEGO — Jason Walters took a job as a Census Field Supervisor because it looked like fun and he needed the money. He never expected to be going out on a limb."I want to get the word out," he says.Walters says he's concerned about Census takers in the field, including his team of 11. His crew is knocking on doors around Mira Mesa to collect data from those who haven't responded to the government survey. Walters says the Census Bureau gave each worker a Ziploc bag with just two cloth masks and a bottle of hand sanitizer, which Walters says is not nearly enough."We would be sending them into harms way with nothing but a piece of cloth over their face," he says.His concern is that when people are home and come to the door, they're less likely to be wearing a mask. He's now pushing for the Census bureau to provide its field workers with plastic face shields - a request he has tried to escalate with no success.The Census Bureau referred ABC-10 to a recent joint statement with the CDC. It says Census takers are trained to wear face masks, maintain six feet of social distance, practice hand hygiene, and not enter homes to do interviews.Walters says the leadership agreed the plastic face shields would be a benefit, but if Walters wanted to get them for his own crew, he'd need to pay for them out of his own pocket. He did exactly that - shelling out about on amazon for a bundle of them, at .50 each.Still, Walters says he's alarmed by the number of seniors he sees signing up as census takers, those at higher risk for Covid-19."We're not talking about body armor.
