SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A researcher at the San Diego Museum of Natural History helped identify a new species of dinosaur, which was just added to the Anatomical Record.Dr. Ashley Poust made the discovery 10 years ago while on a research trip to China."There were a couple of features that immediately stood out to me, made me thing maybe we have something new here," he says.Dr. Poust says the shape of the skull and the presence of two long, decorative tail feathers made him think this was a new species."There's not any other dinosaurs that aren't birds, that we know of, who have long feathers like that," he says.Dr. Poust named the dinosaur "Wulong Bohaiensis." The word Wulong means "Dancing Dragon" in Chinese. The other part of the name comes from the area where it was found.A find like this helps fill in the gaps in how dinosaurs and birds evolved differently. Dr. Poust says Wulong was only about 1 year old when it died. That means it grew those long feathers much earlier than birds typically do. He thinks they could be functional, or it shows a major difference between dinosaurs and birds."You can't really answer those questions in California, but you can answer those questions in a place like China," says Dr. Poust.According to a release, the dinosaur was an early relative of the Velociraptor. It lived 120 million years ago and would have been about the size of a crow or raven.Dr. Poust says he's excited to share the new species with the world. The skeleton is on display at the Dalian Museum in China. It likely will not come to San Diego, as the specimen is too delicate for such a long journey. 1628

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Red Flag warning has been issued for parts of San Diego County ahead of a Santa Ana wind event expected to move in Thursday. The red flag warning goes into effect from 5 a.m. Thursday to 5 p.m. Friday for San Diego County’s inland valleys and mountains, the National Weather Service said. East to northeast winds 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour are forecast. Winds will be the strongest below the Cajon Pass and in the Santa Ana Mountains, according to the agency. Lowest daytime humidity will reach 5 to 10 percent with poor overnight recovery. Greater humidity recovery will move in Sunday as onshore flow strengthens. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man is in custody after a chase ended in a standoff with police at a Mission Bay Motel Sunday morning. Police say the chase started just before 9 a.m. at the A-1 Storage on Garnett Avenue after officers received a citizens' tip. The suspect driving a U-Haul truck led police on a short chase to the 4300 block of Mission Bay Drive near Roadway in San Diego.According to police, the man is wanted on felony weapons charges. After the chase ended, a woman in the passenger seat was detained while the driver ran into the nearby motel. The woman was later released. While searching for the suspect throughout the motel, officers learned that the man broke through several walls to try and escape. “This guy starts forcing himself into apartments, and now we have to deal with a possible hostage situation. That’s the reason why we brought so many resources down here. We wanted to get this guy into custody as fast as we can," Lt. Christian Sharp with the San Diego Police Department said. Eventually, police had to use chemical gas and a K-9 to apprehend the suspect, who has yet to be identified.  1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A nurse who works for the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility tested positive for coronavirus Wednesday, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department says. According to the department, the nurse has been isolated at home. No other information was provided about the individual's condition at this time. The department says it has identified inmates and staff who may have come into close contact with the nurse. A total of nine employees are considered at low exposure risk. We have been providing comprehensive education to staff on how to reduce chances of exposure and infection. We are continually updating communications with employees to include the latest best practices for combating the virus through training bulletins, signage at Sheriff's facilities and daily updates via email. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A person was killed after being hit by a car on Highway 15 near City Heights Sunday morning. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened in a northbound lane of the 15 near El Cajon Boulevard around 5 a.m. A sig alert was issued shortly after as CHP responded to the scene.
