SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Vector Control officials reported new signs Friday of the potentially dangerous disease tularemia on a trail in Sorrento Valley.Several batches of ticks trapped along Lopez Canyon Trail tested positive for the disease, also known as rabbit fever.The first group of ticks with the disease appeared last week, officials said.County officials posted warning signs for hikers. Vector Control will also expand tick trapping in the area.The best way for people to protect themselves from tick bites include insect repellent for humans and pets, and long-sleeved shirts and pants.Tularemia can be treated with antibiotics but it can be fatal. 679

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Humane Society has placed 140 rats up for adoption after they were given up by a woman in Del Mar this week.The rats have undergone veterinary exams and tests and are "happy and ready" for adoption, the Humane Society says. Because rats are social animals, the society is only adopting them out in same-gender pairs unless the owner already has a rat.The rodents were given to SDHS after a woman's pet rats multiplied out of control while she was living out of her vehicle in Del Mar. The population eventually grew to more than 300 pet rats. The rats chewed through the vehicle's wiring, rendering it inoperable.RELATED: Del Mar neighbors aid woman living in car with 300 pet ratsNeighbors have since rallied around the woman, helping her tow her old vehicle, get a new car, and turn over the rats to SDHS. Many of the rats were pregnant females and are currently in foster care through the Humane Society. The 140 rats available now are males and non-pregnant females, according to SDHS."Although rats are not as common as other small rodents, they make great pets," SDHS said. "They are very social, smart and love to interact with humans ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Restaurant workers across San Diego County returned to work Friday, after a Superior Court judge ruled restaurants could serve on-site.Martin Cardenas was right back on the job Friday morning, prepping Chula Vista's El Cruce 241 for what he hoped was a sizable lunch crowd.“You have to understand, it is around the holidays, we're social distancing, we're sanitizing everything, we're doing everything in our capacity to stay safe,” he said.But the governor's office says those precautions are still not enough, with ICU capacity at 0% in Southern California due to the coronavirus spread.In early December, the state reduced county restaurants to takeout only, eliminating thousands of jobs. The state reported Friday that nearly 110,000 San Diegans worked in restaurants in November before the latest shutdown order took effect.But this week, a San Diego Superior Court judge gave restaurants the green light to serve on-site.El Cruce 241 is still outdoor only, but other restaurants are now serving inside, which had been disallowed even before this latest shutdown.Little Italy's Nolita Hall will reopen for dinner Friday, outdoors and inside with its Plexiglas-separated tables.“Just being back to a full indoor/outdoor dining allows us to get to our full schedule that we had prior to the shutdown, which obviously is going to help everybody pay their bills and have some type of Merry Christmas,” said Dean Trombino, the restaurant’s prep lead.But the opportunity to stay open could be short-lived, with the state already appealing the ruling.“It could happen and hopefully it won't because it's very mentally draining when you have to consider not working again and where your next paycheck is coming from,” Trombino said.For now, however, the doors are open and the tables are waiting. 1821

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's recovering job market will take a hit from the new wave of coronavirus-related restrictions that went into effect this week, SANDAG's chief economist said Thursday. The region's jobless rate had been falling from a peak of 25% in early May to 14.3% in late June, the San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday. However, on July 6, new restrictions went into effect to slow the spread of COVID 19. Restaurants and several other public-facing businesses were forced to end indoor service, while bars that don't serve food were required to close. That sent people who had returned to work back to seeking unemployment."Until there's a vaccine in place, it's going to be a very bumpy ride," said Ray Major, SANDAG's chief economist. "It's going to be up and down. There will be times probably where they say OK we can start opening up again, and then for some reason the health numbers start to become worse, and so the economy is going to be impacted again."At Little Italy's Cloak and Petal restaurant, managing partner Cesar Vallin said only about half of the restaurant's 40 workers have been brought back. He said the restaurant changed its menu and moved service outside, but the lower capacity is hitting revenue. "Let's just face it, this could happen two or three more times by end of the year," Vallin said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego grocery store employees rallied Friday due to ongoing negotiations with Kroger affecting some 50,000 workers at Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons in Southern California. “Workers have been without a contract since March, and after 26 failed negotiation sessions are demanding action,” said Todd Walters, President of UFCW Local 135.Some 200 workers were joined at Friday’s rally in Mission Hills by the Teamsters Joint Council 42, who agreed to stop all grocery product deliveries in the event of a strike, union leaders reported.“The negotiations process can take time to reach reasonable solutions that are best for our associates, our communities and our company,” said a spokesperson from Ralphs.The grocery store agreed to meet with the unions from Aug. 22 - 25 to continue negotiations. 823
