OTAY MESA (CNS) - Border Patrol agents stopped a car in Otay Mesa and arrested five people, including a man who claimed to be a national guardsman from California, for alleged human smuggling, a Customs and Border Protection officer said Saturday.Around 3:45 p.m., Border Patrol agents stopped a car near the intersection of Alta Road and Otay Mesa Boulevard, according to Customs and Border Protection Officer Ralph Desio. The area is about a mile north of the U.S.-Mexico border.Agents interviewed the five people inside the car, all men, and determined two were U.S. citizens and the other three were undocumented Mexican nationals, Desio said.The driver of the car claimed to be a California National Guardsman in the process of separating from the service, according to Desio. California National Guard spokesman Lt. Col Jonathan Shirmo, however, told City News Service that the man was not a national guardsman, and was believed to be a U.S. Army reservist.The Army could not be immediately reached for comment.The five were all arrested, and the two citizens could face charges of human smuggling, Desio said.The three undocumented people were being held as witnesses in the case and will later face deportation proceedings, according to Desio. 1264

(KGTV) — Police Saturday released a sketch of man who they say grabbed a 16-year-old in a "bear hug" and tried to kidnap her on her way to school.The teenager was walking to El Camino High School on Thursday just before 7:30 a.m. when the suspect walked past her on Mesa Drive, Oceanside Police say. As the two crossed paths, the suspect turned around and grabbed her in a "bear hug." He also has a scab on the right side of his neck. The suspect was last seen wearing a tan pullover sweatshirt and black baggy, dirty jeans. (KGTV) - A North County non-profit is helping homeless veterans get back on their feet and transition from military to civilian life.Wounded Warrior Homes runs three houses in Oceanside, Vista and Escondido.They help homeless veterans with "invisible" wounds like PTSD or brain injuries.Co-Founder Mia Roseberry says getting the vets into a safe, reliable home is often the most important step towards recovery."When you have a safe place to sleep, and you know you’re going to be safe when you open your eyes, and you’re going to be able to eat and have a place to take a shower and you’re safe, then you can go, "Oh, what’s next?'" says Co-Founder Mia Roseberry.According to the latest Point in Time count of the homeless, there are approximately 1,100 homeless veterans in San Diego County.Army Veteran Russ Hudson was one of them. After serving from 2009 to 2013, he suffered from PTSD. Hudson struggled with drug addiction and was in and out of shelters and assistance homes."I was in a dark place," he says. "I was stressed out, I wasn't able to sleep at night." trouble sleeping.Now, he's found stability with Wounded Warrior Homes. He's begun work training service dogs for other veterans dealing with PTSD."I love animals," Hudson says. "I’m from Mississippi, I grew up on a farm, I love dogs, and I was like, hey I’ll give it a try."He's the kind of success story that Wounded Warrior Homes helps create. Roseberry says housing a few veterans in each home helps keep them connected to the community."If you live in your own place, like in a one bedroom apartment, no one really knows you’re isolating yourself," she says. "With this, your roommates will ask why they didn’t see you at breakfast, or at dinner or during the day. They will call each other on it and drag each other out of the room."Volunteers help refurbish the homes and the organization offers weekly check-ins for the veterans. OTAY MESA (CNS) - Authorities Tuesday released the names of a 70-year- old man and the two San Diego police officers who shot him in Otay Valley Regional Park in Otay Mesa when he allegedly pulled out a handgun that turned out to be a replica.Around 6 a.m. Thursday, Officers Jeremy Huff and Filip Perry from the Neighborhood Policing Division were in the park, near the 500 block of Beyer Way, to conduct an outreach and cleanup operation in conjunction with other city agencies when they encountered Carlos Soto, who was staying in an illegal encampment, according to Lt. Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department."When officers approached the man, he produced a handgun," Brown said. "Officers gave the man commands to get on the ground. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Army veteran sprang into action when he witnessed a man attacking another man at an Oceanside transit station.Oceanside police said the incident happened Tuesday at around 9:30 a.m. on the Amtrak platform at the transit station on 195 S Tremont St.Police said Craig Chaviez allegedly attacked and stabbed a 30-year-old man. When another man -- identified as 40-year-old Andrew Reinicke, tried to intervene, police alleged Chaviez punched him in the ribs and stabbed him in the head area.Reinicke was ready to take a train to culinary school in Pasadena when the incident occurred. The Army veteran told ABC 10News’ Michael Chen that he was dressed in his "chef whites" and reading some notes just before the attack.“A guy rushed up, jumped on top of him and started wailing on him,” Reinicke said of the victim.Reinicke said as the fight escalated, that’s when he decided to get involved.“You see someone who needs defending and you do it. You don’t necessarily choose to do it, you just do it,” said Reinicke.After jumping into the fray and tussling with the attacker, Reinicke said the man pulled out a small knife.“He was punching me in the eye, the ribs, and the face. He comes at me again, throws me to the ground and tries to stab me as often as he can. He ends up getting me right in the head,” Reinicke said.Reinicke told ABC 10News that the knife “did pierce the skull” and he suffered a “little bit of bleeding on the brain.” He said his adrenaline was pumping so he did not feel any pain initially.According to Reinicke, the attacker then accused him and the first victim of robbing him before walking towards buses.Witnesses said Chaviez tried to flee from the scene, but he was arrested a short time later.Oceanside police said the 25-year-old Chaviez, who is from Inglewood, was a fugitive wanted in Los Angeles County over an aggravated assault and assault with a deadly weapon case.
