SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Virulent Newcastle disease was detected this weekend at a property in central San Diego County, a state veterinarian said Sunday. Friday's detection was identified when a private veterinarian submitted dead birds to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, according to state veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones. Response team members from the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are working through the Labor Day weekend on control measures, including restriction of bird movement, mandatory euthanasia of infected and exposed birds, and surveillance testing near the property where infection was detected. "We are moving quickly to investigate the origin of disease as well as any movement of birds or equipment that could carry infection," Jones said in a statement. Detections of virulent Newcastle disease have decreased greatly over the last few months, she said. "Our priority remains to stop the spread of the virus and eradicate the disease," Jones said."We have made significant progress toward this goal by identifying and clearing remaining pockets of disease, but this case reminds all bird owners in Southern California to remain aware of VND signs, practice good biosecurity, stop illegal movement of birds from property to property, and report any sick birds immediately to the Sick Bird Hotline, 866-922-2473."Members of the 'home flock' community encourage keeping your birds where they are, wash your hands, change your clothes and shoes after contact with the birds to prevent the spread of the disease.The disease put California on a quarantine, keeping businesses from buying new chickens, leaving cages empty. Offered at San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE), the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) class is a noncredit/non-fee course. It supports people recovering from ABIs like brain trauma, stroke/aneurysm, brain tumor, brain infection, and anoxia. I instantly broke into tears," said Wysocki.Along Congress Street, Wysocki found a side window of her Lexus on the ground, smashed."Then I came upon the other broken window, which was also a shock and quite a bummer," said Wysocki.Inside her car, about 30 bucks in emergency cash was missing, along with some ibuprofen. Her windows are tinted, but if someone peered inside, some boxes filled with paper products can been seen. Wysocki believes those boxes made her car a target. Wysocki is hardly alone. Along Congress Street, there is a trail of broken glass."It's really sad. It's disgusting," said Wysocki.Police told Wysocki there were seven other "smash-and-grab" break-ins discovered in her neighborhood that same day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 10-year-old boy who allegedly fired two rounds from a shotgun at San Diego Police officers after barricading himself in a Southcrest backyard shed is in custody, police say.Family members at the home in the 4000 block of Boston Ave., about a block north of Caesar Chavez Elementary School, called police at about 9 a.m. after the 10-year-old armed himself with a knife and hammer.When police arrived, the child ran and hid in a shed with a shotgun, SDPD said. The child fired two rounds at officers, according to police, but no one was injured.The 10-year-old barricaded himself for nearly two hours, before surrendering to police peacefully.SDPD said the child will be taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.The shotgun was recovered at the scene, police said, and investigators plan to look into how the child came into possession of the weapon.10News is monitoring this breaking news story. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A choir group from Carlsbad High School got the chance of a lifetime Tuesday night when they took the stage with a legendary rock band.Students from the choir gave themselves an opportunity to perform with award-winning band Foreigner by entering a contest from local radio station KGB-FM in May.“We just sent in a video to KGB, and they gave us a call and said, ‘Hey, you guys won,’” said Carlsbad High choir director Jessie Bullock.“Our teacher told us one day in class and we were like, ‘Oh my gosh. There’s no way! That’s amazing!’” said student Garret Avilez.To the members of Foreigner, public school music education is important.Bassist Jeff Pilson said with tight budgets, public music programs are often the first to get cut. Those programs personally inspired his career.“I started playing the cello when I was in 5th grade and happened to end up with an amazing music teacher,” said Pilson.None of the students were born until decades after Foreigner made a name for itself worldwide.
