NEWBURY PARK (KGTV) -- A wind-driven brush fire has erupted in Southern California, burning near structures in the Newbury Park area of Ventura County.Cal Fire says the Hill Fire has quickly grown to 5,000 to 7,000 acres, shutting down both directions of Highway 101, as of 4 p.m. More than 160 firefighters have been dispatched, and eight air tankers have been ordered.At a Thursday night news conference, Ventura County fire officials said they expect the blaze to burn all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Should winds pick up, the blaze could reach the ocean by Friday morning. According to firefighters, the fuel burning hasn't seen a wildfire in a long time, adding to the intensity of the fire. One firefighter did receive minor injuries fighting the blaze. NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- A Noblesville, Indiana woman says a trip to the spa with her daughters ended with a serious infection and a long stay at the hospital.Jennifer White said she got the pedicure nearly two weeks ago at “Nails and Lounge” in Noblesville.Over the next two days, White said she noticed her foot start swelling and turning purple and decided to go to the emergency room.She was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday with a severe infection and she’s been there for nearly a week.“I was worried I could possibly lose my toe. I could lose my foot,” said White. “I’m out of work … all for that 35 minutes of getting a pedicure.”White says the doctors tell her that the scrapings on her foot probably caused a small incision which allowed an infection to enter her foot.“I’m still here and they’re saying it’s due to the fact that I went to the nail salon… unclean, unsanitary and it’s made the infection settle in my foot,” said White.According to the Indiana Administrative Code, the use of razor devices to shave, reduce or remove calluses or corns is prohibited at spas in the state.Nails and Lounge’s manager says they did not use any prohibited devices and that they sanitize and dispose of all tools according to state law. She says they also bleach the pedicure tubs after each use, but have ordered plastic liners for each tub because of this experience.The spa manager denies that their pedicure caused the infection but says they are open to working with White to pay for her medical bills.  1525

NEW YORK (AP) — Facing a potentially ruinous wave of new sex-abuse lawsuits, the Boy Scouts of America is increasing its annual youth membership fee by more than 80%.The group says the move, which has dismayed many of the Scouts' adult volunteer leaders who warn the increase is prohibitively steep for some, is needed to meet rising operating costs, notably for the liability insurance that covers all official Scouting activities.For years, the BSA has been entangled in costly litigation with plaintiffs who said they were abused by scout leaders in their youth. Hundreds of lawsuits may lie ahead with the recent enactment of laws in New York, New Jersey, Arizona and California making it easier for victims of long-ago abuse to seek damages.The fee increase, disclosed to the Scouts' regional councils last week, seeks to relieve some of the financial pressure. As of Jan. 1, the annual membership fee for 2.2. million youth members will rise from to ; the fee for adults will rise from to , the Scouts said. The increases could generate more than million in additional funds in the coming year.The BSA says it's exploring "all available options" to maintain its programs and has not ruled out the possibility of declaring bankruptcy.As part of that process, the Scouts said they are consolidating their departments and recently eliminated more than 35 positions at its National Service Center.The BSA's current youth participation is down from more than 4 million in peak years of the past.
