CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A former longtime employee of the Sweetwater Union High School District pleaded not guilty Tuesday afternoon to felony charges of embezzlement. Danya Williams, 42, is charged with embezzling more than ,000 over 18 months beginning in June of 2017. Williams worked for the district for 17 years in the accounting department and most recently human resources. According to prosecutors, she was in charge of taking money orders to pay for background checks of job applicants. She's accused of altering the money orders; making them payable to herself. Prosecutors say she deposited 800 money orders into her own personal account. "Some that weren't hired can request them back. When some of them were asked for them back, they discovered they were never deposited into an account," said Deputy District Attorney Kimball Denton. Williams resigned from the district when the allegations surfaced. She's out of jail on a ,000 bond. She could face four years in prison if convicted. She has no criminal record. "It's very disappointing and sad when people who we trust within our school communities do brazen things like this that breach that trust and we're going to be holding her accountable for her actions." "She probably ranks in the top ten of the most nervous I've ever had. She's about to have a breakdown today. She's extremely nervous, and again, she's the nicest person you'll ever meet. I understand the other side as well," said defense attorney Kerry Armstrong. Her preliminary exam is scheduled for April 30th. 1563

(KGTV) - Surveillance video shows a woman at the front door of a home in Chula Vista doing a face-plant to avoid police.Along Paseo Burga, Lillie Utz got an unexpected visitor outside her front door as she was sewing Christmas presents on Saturday afternoon.Through a window, Utz saw a woman racing back and forth in her front yard. Turns out neighbors had seen the same woman running in and out of yards. At least one of them had called police. Soon after, video shows a woman at Utz's front door. She grabs at the door handle, but it's locked.RELATED: Video: Female duo raids La Mesa house as owner watches on doorbell cam"Very scary to think someone would walk into your home. I was about six feet away sewing," said Utz. In the video, the woman can't get in, so she kneels and hides. She grabs a cushion to shield her face as a police cruiser drives by."She got up and another car drives by. I'm assuming she thought it was another police car, and then did a face-plant," said Utz.RELATED: Doorbell camera captures neighbor's warning ahead of wildfire in California The woman is seen diving to the ground as that other vehicle - not a police car - drives by. She then pops up, grabs a bag she had with her and runs behind a bush. Moments later, she emerges without the bag and takes off."Threw a bag over the fence and into my pool equipment," said Utz.Utz says inside the bag were bolt cutters and packaged electronics, including a Roku Streaming Stick, a Google Home smart speaker and a Tile Mate key finder.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Chula Vista Police 619-422-TIPS. 1628

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Chula Vista Girl Scout Ana De Almeida Amaral was recently given the National Gold Award, the Girl Scouts' top honor, for her work combating racism in education, according to the organization.“In a time when an increasing number of young people are using their voices to come together and take action, these girls stand out," said GSUSA CEO Sylvia Acevedo. Nine other girl scouts received the honor as well. "They have made an incredible impact in the worlds of STEM, education, agriculture, the environment, civil rights, and beyond."Amaral was recognized for creating the first ethnic studies course at High Tech High School. She developed the course to serve the school's large population of students of color. "Through my first years of high school I saw that the representation of people of color wasn't apparent in our curriculum, in our history classes, or our school clubs," Amaral, now a senior, says. Amaral ran seminars for peers that would lead the course, covering culturally responsive teaching and how to include diverse perspectives in lessons. But Amaral says her project goes deeper than her course. She says the course is really a way to address institutional racism in education and help students bridge that educational gap."Although it's not that our educators today believe those ideas, but it's just the way our education system was founded," Amaral said. "For ethnic studies to be a place for students to share their identities, be connected with one another, and have the resources to feel empowered by their education means students are engaged with school, students are graduating high school, and students are going to college."The class is an elective, student-led course that runs during school hours, focusing on historical oppression, marginalized groups, and cultures. Lessons teach students how to identify injustice historically and in their own lives while empowering them to change it."It's been running for two years. Now that I'm graduating it will continue with my younger leaders next year," Amaral added. 2082
