The pandemic has more people wanting to learn more about their medical history. Several services can already track relatives and piece together a family tree. But now, you can do the same for your health. In her radio show and podcast "Passport Mommy," Michelle Jerson talks about all things motherhood."We cover everything that parents are going through," Jerson said.Jerson said she chose that name because she says motherhood is a journey. These days though, Jerson is on her own personal journey — wanting to know everything she can about her family health."As a new mom, I want to pass that information on to my children," Jerson said. "I want them to be educated. I want them to have as much knowledge as they can have so they can make informed decisions. So, when they go to the doctor's office, and they ask those first few questions about family history, they're not saying, 'I'm not sure.'"But she says it's even more complicated than that."My mom was adopted, and she never found out who her biological father was and just recently found out who her biological mother is," Jerson said. "She did get some limited information health-wise, but for me, it's very important for us to find out as much as we can about our family history and our health."Jerson heard about a new test from Ancestry — one of the leading genealogy services — that provides a DNA analysis of a user's health. Jerson sent off the saliva sample test and is awaiting results.Dr. Sarah South, the Vice President of Ancestry Health, says scientists look at DNA to see if a person is more at risk for common inherited conditions — things like cancer, heart disease, high cholesterol or blood disorders."This isn't just information about something that might happen. This is information about what might happen but also how to prevent it," South said. There's still a lot to learn about this kind of science, but South says finding out health information can be both empowering and reassuring — especially now.South says that during the pandemic, they've been getting a lot more interest."Certainly, this pandemic has just heightened people's awareness of taking preventive action," South said. "So, it's absolutely top of mind for a lot of individuals who now recognize that taking care of preventative and taking care of their health, being in that driver seat. This is the right time for it, and the technology is clear."South says that regardless of what a person may or not learn from the test that it's still important to get regular health screenings. After receiving results, people should discuss what they discover with their doctors and make sure they follow up with preventative care — and remember that not every disease is linked to genetics.South also says that moms are usually the health care managers within families, as they tend to have the most interest. With that in mind, Jerson says she's taking the time to learn more about her own lineage."It's really empowering to know that we have a way to do this and that, yes, there are still states that have the adoption records locked and sealed so you can't even get access to them," Jerson said. "So, any way that you can do (research) on your own, I think is great."Whatever her test results yield, it's just the beginning of a larger mystery that could hopefully open a lot of doors. 3338

The hottest gift this holiday season is a new gaming system under the tree.Microsoft's new XBox Series X and Sony's new PlayStation 5 are the hardest-to-find items this Christmas, quickly becoming the Furby or Hatchimal of 2020.To make it even more frustrating, some people who ordered one are ending up with nothing after a Kohl's website malfunction, Walmart Thanksgiving night fail, and Amazon package thefts.Kohl's, Walmart frustrationJerris Williams is one of the few lucky ones: he showed us his new PS5, which he found at Target the other morning at 6 a.m."We finally got one," he said, "and it was almost like a lottery."He thought he found one on Kohl's website a couple of days earlier, as did thousands of other shoppers."Kohl's went live, which means they were starting to sell the PlayStation 5," he said. "And that went on at 1:30 in the morning."Williams quickly got a confirmation from Kohl's that a PS5 was on the way, only to have his hopes dashed hours later."We were happy, excited, celebrating. And then the next morning, they canceled on us."Kohl's confirms to us that it was unable to fill all PS5 orders. The electronics blog Techspot suspects thousands of people were left empty-handed by the website glitch. The one consolation: Williams gets to keep 0 in bonus Kohl's cash for his trouble. Kohl's says it is still giving bonus cash to all the people who had their orders canceled."I'm doing the math in my head," he said. "All my friends have the same thing, so that's a lot of money that they are all giving away for nothing."Walmart website failWalmart attempted to do shoppers a favor Thanksgiving night, announcing they were putting up several thousand PS5s at 9 p.m.But most shoppers ended up like Stephanie Meibers, with an error message when they tried to grab one the minute the Walmart site went live."I tried to add to cart," she said. "Then you get the 'oh dear' message, a little dog with antlers, and then I get 'We are getting temporary internet issues.' Then the next thing it said it was out of stock, and 'We have moved it to your save for later folder.'"Tech sites blame what they call "Grinch bots," automated programs that grabbed the inventory immediately, before shoppers could get out their credit cards.Complaints of Amazon switcheroosBut Kohl's isn't the only retailer trying to soothe angry and frustrated customers right now. With Amazon, it's a whole different problem. Some Amazon customers (most in England so far) are posting photos of other things they claim showed up in their XBox or PS5 shipping box.Buyers claim they received everything from brown paper, to a foot massager, to a box of Purina cat food. 2675

The Phoenix Police Department says the ex-boyfriend of Kiera Bergman, a 19-year-old woman who has been missing since August 4, has been arrested for identity theft.Police say 23-year-old Jon Clark was being questioned in relation to Bergman’s disappearance when police found several items with the personal identification of other people as well as items indicating forgery in his vehicle.Clark was arrested Friday and booked into jail for 22 counts of aggravated identity theft and two counts of forgery.Police have given no indication that this arrest connects Clark to Bergman’s missing person’s case.Bergman was last seen at her home near on Aug. 4.According to police, Bergman never returned home after leaving and has not been seen or heard from since.Kiersten Bragg, Bergman's mother, says her daughter went to work that Saturday morning, and Clark picked her up but she never made it back to their apartment.Police still say her disappearance is considered suspicious, and they are still asking anyone with any information on her disappearance to call 480-WITNESS. 1085

The latest release of documents related to the mass shooting on Oct. 1 contain a mixture of reports by police officers and witness statements. One of the reports contained in the release on Wednesday appears to be an interview with country singer Jason Aldean, who was performing when Stephen Paddock opened fire on music lovers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.According to the statement, the person making the statement instructed officers to take himself, his bodyguard and pregnant wife to the airport. He then told the officer that he was on stage playing when he heard the first few pops. He said he was confused like everyone was and looked around, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary.  The next large barrage of fire he said was so loud to him that it sounded as if someone was right next to the stage firing shots. The person making the statement then said he could see people in the audience dropping to the ground in "waves."  Someone backstage yelled out that it was gunfire and for him to get down. That's when he ran off the stage and went to protect his pregnant wife who was inside the tour bus that protected the perimeter until he was evacuated. The documents included what appears to be a written statement from Aldean."I was onstage singing and thought I heard fireworks. I turned to look at my monitor guy and saw my personal security guard running toward me and telling me to evacuate the stage. At that point, we layed (sic) on the stage and hid until we could get on my bus. We then stayed in the back of the bus for a few hours until police escorted us away." Another report appeared to be an interview with Dee Jay Silver, who had performed at the festival around 9 p.m. ahead of Aldean. After the shooting began, he was hiding in a tour bus. Silver then received a text asking what floor his 1-year-old son was on.The baby was sleeping down the hall on the 32nd floor -- the floor where shooter Stephen Paddock was located. That's when Silver found out the floor had been evacuated. Silver was taken to multiple places before he ended up at the Thomas & Mack. He eventually received a text that his son was at Town Square. After he was reunited with him Silver told police, "I just held him and held him and held him." Police also asked Silver if he had noticed any suspicious, staying on the same floor as the shooter. Silver did not recall seeing Paddock or speaking to him. But he also didn't see housekeeping during that time. Silver was moved to Delano after the shooting. A bike officer with Mandalay Bay described how he was headed towards the festival grounds when he heard that a Mandalay Bay officer was hit and decided to turn around. He commandeered an elevator, picked up an engineer, and headed to the 32nd floor. When he got there, he heard automatic gunfire coming from the end of the hall. According to the bike officer, that is when Jesus Campos came running towards him when the shooting paused. The bike officer says he inspected the wound and decided it didn't look very severe.Everything was kind of a blur after that but the bike officer said he helped police officers clear the rooms. One police officer who was at the scene describes how he and other police officers took cover behind a police car during the shooting. The officer says that multiple rounds hit the car and the rear window was shot out. One of the officers began yelling that he was hit and said he could not move his arm. Another officer grabbed the wounded officer and they left to seek medical attention.According to statement by several police officers, there was a lot of commotion and confusion the night of the shooting at several properties located near Mandalay Bay.Calls were received from Circus Circus, Tropicana, Bellagio, New York-New York and the Bellagio hotel-casino.In each case, police officers were unable to find another shooter. However, they did discover that the possible shooter at the Bellagio was actually the vice president of security. It appears that the VP decided to put on a tactical vest and arm himself and protect Bellagio if necessary. Many reports from officers describe how they were off duty at the time of the shooting but "self dispatched" when they began to hear what was happening. Several officers headed towards the Route 91 festival grounds while others headed to hospitals where victims were being assisted or even took it upon themselves to assist with traffic control. 4520

The number of people filing for unemployment for the first time is dropping slightly. Just over 800,000 people filed last week, which is less than what was expected. For perspective, only about 287,000 filed the same time last year. The total number of people still receiving some kind of benefits is just under 21 million. Meanwhile, some people who do have jobs are leaving a lot of money on the table in 2020.“If you don’t take time off, you are basically giving the company back almost a paycheck, like here you go, here's my one-week salary,” said Vicki Salemi, Monster Career Expert.Career website Monster found almost half of workers didn't take their full paid time off this year. The pandemic turned work life balance into an all-at-home blended mess for many. Many workers said they didn't take their time because there was nothing to do, nowhere to go, or they were worried about their jobs.Only a small amount of workers are able to rollover their unused time into 2021.Taking time off has been especially critical this year.“You can see things more clearly. You may even be happier thinking about your time off even if that just meant you stayed on your living room couch and binged the latest show,” said Salemi. Some employers, like Monster, even added mental health or additional days off this year, recognizing the extreme stress many were under.Salemi says even if you don’t have big plans for your time away from work, create some sort of framework.“It doesn't have to be rigid, but just so you feel like at the end of the day or the end of the time off, you don’t want to feel like it was for not, like its OK if you're just going to rest this whole time,” said Salemi. If you didn't get in all that paid time this year, depending on your circumstance, it’s worth asking to see if you could carry some over into next year. Now is also a good time to plan for 2021. Monster suggests even starting small with some three-day weekends in January and February. 1978
