UPDATE: SDSU officials decided Wednesday to keep students and staff out of the building due to complaints.SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly two dozen students and staff at San Diego State University say a chemical odor in one of the buildings made them sick.The Professional Studies and Fine Arts building was undergoing construction when the complaints began in January and has been closed since March 13. Students and staff reported sore throats, headaches, even nosebleeds. The university says there were 22 incident reports.The school says Environmental Health and Safety has performed air quality tests regularly since January showing the vapor levels in the building were non-toxic. SDSU brought in Expert Joel Berman who explained to students and staff Wednesday the two items causing the odor were coal tar pitch and asphalt. He said they were never at impermissible levels and were never a health hazard, despite the complaints of the staff.Staff did not take that well, "I think a majority of people are feeling very upset because there's this sense that we're all being gas-lit and being told that our common experience is not real or valid," one woman said.The Air Quality Control District is investigating, filing a Notice of Violation to the school as well as the contractors hired by SDSU. The violation reads, "discharging from a source, quantities of air contaminants or other material which cause injury, detriment, nuisance or annoyance to any considerable number of persons. Specifically for the application of Tremco Tremfex to the San Diego State University Professional Studies and Fine Arts building roof, causing the release of coal tar pitch volatiles into the building."The initial construction was to install rooftop mechanical shafts. The initial patching of the roof around the new shafts was done improperly, according to SDSU administrators. The re-patching was what caused the odor.San Diego State is planning to hold forums on April 3 and April 8 to give updates about the building repair and address safety concerns.President of the university, Adela de la Torre, stated they learned a lot from the forum, and it struck a chord with her. She said the university will work to be more communicative with students and staff and no one will enter the PSFA building until it is safe.If you're a student experiencing these symptoms, the university directs you to visit the Health Services Building. US Customs and Border Protection closed road and pedestrian bridges on Sunday at the San Ysidro port of entry, one of the largest land border crossings between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico.Groups of Central American migrants have been converging on the Mexican border city for days in their quest to gain entry to the United States. Their presence has drawn Mexican troops, protesters and fiery rhetoric from President Donald Trump and Mexican officials.As crowds amassed at San Ysidro, around 500 migrants overwhelmed federal and local Mexican police blockades and rushed toward the border, said freelance reporter Alfredo Alvarez, who is in the crowd.PHOTOS: Migrants converge on Tijuana-San Diego borderThe crowds were made up of men, women and a lot of children, Alvarez said.With bridge and pedestrian border crossings closed in both directions, the migrants headed for the cargo area where the railroad crosses, Alvarez said.They appeared to get close to the border wall, Alvarez said. He could not see from his position if the migrants had managed to get across the actual border.More demonstrations were planned on Sunday at San Ysidro, the busiest land port of entry in the Western Hemisphere, according to the US General Services Administration.The planned demonstrations on both sides of the border prompted CBP to deploy extra personnel to the border crossing, the agency said."The additional personnel, which included CBP officers, US Border Patrol agents, and Air and Marine agents, were recently deployed to the San Diego area from various areas around the country in preparation for the potential arrival of the caravan in Tijuana."The mayor of Tijuana said on Sunday that he would not let the migrants' actions damage the city's relationship with its neighbors across the border. Vice President Mike Pence said Wednesday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be issuing new guidance on how schools can safely reopen in the fall.Pence's comments come hours after President Donald Trump tweeted that the current CDC guidance was "very tough & very expensive," adding that the agency was asking districts to do things that were "impractical."At the briefing, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield was asked if the agency was changing its guidelines because of the President's concerns.“We will continue to develop and evolve our guidance to meet the needs of schools and the states that we continue to provide that assistance to,” Redfield said.Watch the briefing in the video below.Pence also said that the administration hoped to add funding incentives for states that reopen their schools in the next round of stimulus legislation.Pence added that he felt children should return to school in the fall not only so they wouldn't fall behind academically, but because it would promote students' "mental health, well-being, physical health and nutrition. Tumblr, a popular blog service owned and operated by Yahoo, says it will ban "adult content" from its site on Dec. 17.The decision comes just weeks after the Tumblr app was temporarily removed from Apple's App Store after child pornography was found on the site. Tumblr said in a statement to The Verge that the decision to ban adult content did not stem from that incident.Tumblr's new policy bans "explicit sexual content" and most instances of nudity. The site added that nudity "found in art," as well as nudity in the context of health-related situations and in the context of political protest or newsworthy events would still be permitted.Tumblr also says that written erotica will still be permitted on the site.After Dec. 17, any explicit content flagged by algorithms will be hidden from public view but not deleted from the site.
