BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) issued a Chair's Statement here on Saturday, agreeing to issue the Beijing Declaration on Sustainable Development.     The statement said the leaders held extensive and in-depth discussions on issues of realizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as well as the sustainable development targets agreed in Johannesburg, strengthening energy security cooperation, jointly addressing the challenge of climate change, and environmental protection, including water resources, forests and air, and improving social cohesion under the framework of sustainable development.     Leaders stressed the importance of mid-term review of the MDGs, and underscored the need for ASEM members to further deepen international development cooperation to meet the IADGs, particularly the MDGs, in a timely manner.     Leaders expressed their support for strengthened international cooperation on climate change that could help assess impacts and vulnerabilities, build adaptive capacities, and support adaptation actions.     Leaders also emphasized the need for the sustainable management of forest and ocean as well as other territorial, coastal and marine ecosystems.     Leaders stressed the need to focus on development needs and environmental sustainability in the energy sector. They emphasized the need for Asia-Europe cooperation to ensure the availability of environmentally sound energy at a reasonable price to support economic growth and that the latest technology should be intended to increase energy efficiency.     Leaders recognized that the impact of globalization is increasingly being felt by the people of ASEM members, and share a common interest in strengthening the social dimension of globalization and improving social cohesion.     To this end, leaders unanimously agreed to issue the Beijing Declaration on Sustainable Development.     The Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 7) was held in Beijing on 24 and 25 October 2008. The Meeting was the first gathering of the leaders of 45 members of ASEM since its second round of enlargement.

CHENGDU, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's central government has pledged to help its Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) to cope with the impact of the ongoing international financial crisis.     It was revealed by Vice Premier Li Keqiang when meeting the SAR's Chief Executive Ho Hau Wah in Chengdu, capital of southwest Sichuan Province on Sunday.     Ho arrived here on Sunday, leading a delegation of the SAR to attend the Ninth Western China International Economy and Trade Fair.     The Vice Premier said the central government would give all-out support to the SAR's Chief Executive and government in administration in line with laws. It would actively assist the SAR's government to maintain stability and prosperity of the region.     Li also praised the SAR's government for promoting Macao's exchange and cooperation with the country's inland regions and hoped that Macao could make more contribution to economic construction and development in China's western region.

BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called on domestic companies to pump up confidence in coping with the global financial crisis during his inspection of enterprises in eastern Shanghai and Zhejiang Province from Friday to Sunday.     Wen said buoying up their confidence was "a powerful weapon to deal with the adverse effects of the global economic turbulence and financial turmoil" when inspecting local private enterprises and large-scale companies.     "Enterprises must have confidence for them to stabilize market expectations. Confidence is what they need to tide over the difficult times," he said.     Wen, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, pointed out the private sector played an important role in keeping the stable and relatively fast economic growth momentum, creating more jobs and maintaining the social stability. VICTORIA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Seychellois President James Alix Michel and Speaker of the country's National Assembly Patrick Herminie, Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo arrived here Wednesday afternoon to begin an official visit to the country on the final leg of his five-nation African tour.     In a written statement released at the airport upon his arrival, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, highlighted the rapid development of the China-Seychelles relations in the past 32 years since the two nations forged the diplomatic relations, noting that the bilateral cooperation between the two nations have brought concrete benefit to the two peoples. HAVANA, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday visited Fidel Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in Havana.     The two leaders warmly shook hands, exchanged greetings and had a long conversation in a sincere and friendly atmosphere.     Hu said he was delighted to see Castro again. The comrades of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China "have all cared about your health and I brought their sincere greetings to you," he said.     "I see in person that you have recovered and have been energetic so I feel very pleased," he told Castro. "The Chinese people, the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government will for ever remember all these," he said.     Castro expressed appreciation of China's relief and reconstruction efforts following the Wenchuan earthquake and other natural disasters. He once again congratulated China on its successful hosting of the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics as well as the success of the Shenzhou-7 manned space mission.     Hu said that the Chinese government will always adhere to the principle of long-term friendship between China and Cuba. The Chinese people will, as always, support the just struggle of the Cuban people in safeguarding state sovereignty and opposing outside interference.     China will continue to provide assistance for Cuba within its capacity, and will firmly support the country's socialist cause, he said.     "We will work with the Cuban people to continuously push forward the development of friendship between China and Cuba," he added.     Castro said he and other Cuban comrades have followed closely "everything that happened in China."     "China has a large population and a culture of long standing and the Chinese people are known for their diligence," he said, adding that the Chinese people "have surmounted all manner of unimaginable difficulties and accomplished great achievements in construction."     "As the current international financial crisis is spreading, the Chinese economy has kept a sound momentum for development, demonstrating that China is the most prepared country," he said.     China is the most dynamic nation in the world and "no force can stop it from forging ahead," he said.     The two leaders also exchanged views on the two countries' economic development and major international and regional issues, including the international financial crisis and the world economy.     Before the conclusion of the meeting, Hu again expressed his heartfelt wish for Castro's good health. Castro, in return, expressed his gratitude.     Cuba is the third leg of Hu's five-nation trip. He has attended a Group of 20 summit on the financial crisis in Washington and visited Costa Rica.     He will also visit Peru and Greece, and attend the Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in the Peruvian capital of Lima.
