FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) — An employee of California State University, Fullerton was killed in a stabbing in a campus parking lot Monday in what police called a targeted attack, though they were not sure of a motive. The victim was in his late 50s and worked in international student admissions at the sprawling campus in Orange County, police Lt. Jon Radus said. He was not immediately identified by authorities.A witness who called 911 said the suspect fled on foot, Radus said. Police found the victim inside a car with multiple stab wounds, he said."We do not know motive at this point for what occurred," Radus told reporters. "We do not believe there is a random stabber."The school, which is part of the 23-campus California State University system, enrolled more than 39,000 students last year. A commuter school in the middle of its host city, it is well known in the sports world for producing strong baseball teams.According to the university's calendar, the academic year was scheduled to start Monday.Authorities described the suspect as male with black hair and wearing black pants and a black shirt. 1119

Getting hired for a job in today's market can be frustrating and challenging. Career experts say if you think about your soft skills and what you value you offer a company, you’ll have a leg up.As we all continue to work from home, LinkedIn career expert Blair Heitmann says jobs in the remote sector are hot.Remote jobs are in demand, Heitmann said. “I mean we are seeing an uptick of remote jobs across LinkedIn. You don’t necessarily have to be in the same city to find those opportunities as well."Because of the pandemic, many jobs aren’t available. Heitmann said applicants should try and focus on what jobs are available in a similar sector.“Try to think through how to transfer to a role that would be a stepping stone for you to get there,” Heitmann said. “It might not be your dream job out of the gate, but it would help you gain the skills you need to get towards that eventually.”Employers right now are also focused on soft skills.Teamwork, communication, problem-solving, those are all examples of soft skills, Heitmann said. If you are good at solving problems, customer service might be an area that could be good for you.For many people, going back to school or learning a trade is not an option. LinkedIn says sales associate, delivery driver, construction worker, and project manager are all jobs in sectors hiring, to name a few.The hiring website offers 12,000 courses online for job seekers to take. The bottom line, update your resume and cover letter. Have a beautiful headshot for your profile picture and enable job alerts on whatever hiring website you choose."Our data shows us that people who tend to apply early and jump on the opportunity once it’s completely posted are more likely to get the position," Heitmann said.WFTS' Michael Paluska first reported this story. 1807

HERRIMAN, Utah – If you were to take a step into the workshop of Heidi Swapp, a mix of sawdust and noise would greet you almost instantly.“This is where all the magic happens,” said Swapp. Her oldest son works alongside her, providing some support and even some comic relief when needed.“Ok, go back to work,” she said to her son with a smile. The workshop is where Swapp comes to create.“I do love it. I love the possibilities,” she said.Swapp has always been crafty, whether in the workshop or at her home.“Photos and stories are super important to me and it brings me joy,” she said. However, for a few years, she couldn’t bring herself to create anything.“When Cory passed away, I just couldn’t scrapbook anymore,” she said.Cory is her second oldest son.“Cory called me and told me that he loved me and told me goodbye,” she said with tears in her eyes.Just months after his 16th birthday, Cory died by suicide.“I was completely shocked,” Swapp said. “I didn’t even know that was tumbling around in his mind.”She said Cory was seeing a therapist at the time of his death.“We had met for about an hour and it was a very tender and wonderful conversation,” she said.About 45 minutes later, Cory was gone.“The hard thing about suicide is you’re left with questions and it’s not one question, it’s 10,000 questions,” Swapp said. “It’s questions that you will never have answers for.”Through a podcast called “Light the Fight,” Swapp started talking about the things most families struggle to talk about – mental illness.Alongside her for each weekly episode is Cory’s therapist.“Both of us had been in that room and both of us had been trying to help him,” she said. Now, they help others.“I believe 100% that if we can shine light and if we can talk about stuff, then we’re in the fight and we can go to work,” she said.It was what motivated Swapp to go back to work and to create once again. In a way, Cory is there too. Swapp still wears his favorite Vans shoes when she works.“Telling his story, talking and laughing and remembering him is a huge part of healing,” she said. “If everything is just kept in the dark then we have nothing to work with.” 2157

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced she will give up leadership of her center-right Christian Democrat Union party after 18 years in the post, German media has reported. Merkel announced during a meeting with officials that she will not seek to run for re-election at the party's convention in December. But she made clear that she wanted to remain as chancellor, a position she has held since 2005, RTL reported, citing party sources. The announcement is a sign of Merkel's weakened power within her own party, and waning popularity in the country. Both parties under Merkel's ruling coalition -- the CDU and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) -- suffered heavy losses in a regional election over the weekend. While the CDU remained the largest party in the election, which was held in the central state of Hesse, results were down 10% from the previous election. This weekend's election is the second blow to Markel's fragile "grand coalition" government. On October 14, the Christian Social Union, or CSU -- the Bavarian sister party to the CDU -- lost its majority in the Bavarian state parliament. The CSU has dominated politics in the state since the end of World War II, ruling for all but three years over the course of nearly seven decades.Speaking on October 15, Merkel admitted that voters had lost trust in the government and that it was her job to "make sure that trust is won back.""I will work on that with as much vigor as I can," she added.Bavaria bore the brunt of the 2015 refugee crisis; at its peak, thousands of asylum seekers were crossing into the state every day. Since then, both Merkel and her CSU allies have been criticized for their management of the influx. 1700

High school sports programs around the country are trying to figure out what the fall season will look like. In California, the sports season will be delayed until December or January. So, what does that mean for students hoping to play in college?Julian Jenkins is a Senior Regional Recruiting Director for Next College Student Athlete, the largest athletic recruiting network in the world. “So it puts you in a pickle. 'How am I going to get recruited? My son is not playing for these 3-4 months, how is he or she in her sport gonna get recruited' and that’s a big question," said Jenkins. In baseball, a pickle is when a base runner is caught between two players throwing the ball back and forth. Off the field, it's students who are now trapped in the stands.“Our number one job is to help them fill their roster spots every year with potential candidates for these opportunities," Jenkins said. They work with college and high school coaches, club coaches, athletic administrators and families. They were online before the pandemic and have been around 20 years. “College coaches don’t have endless time. They’d love to be everywhere at all times, they’d love to go to every single high school game, every club tournament, but they can’t be, so they come to our website and reach out directly to our people and say 'I need an outsider hitter in volleyball, I need a quarterback in football.'"Before Covid-19, recruiters from NCSA were at every live sports event you can think of. More than 500 last year. Now, there's lots of layers to what happens next, as regions try to figure out what the sports season looks like. Jenkins says students should know that a pause on the field doesn't mean a pause in college recruiting. “A lot of these students have academics. A lot of them have game video, but in sports like baseball, soccer, softball, they have skills video and some experience they can share with college coaches,” Jenkins said.California's sports season might be delayed but other states aren't at this point. Which means the push to get ahead and the competition to get to that next level just got more intense. “The power of technology is very powerful and there’s a big technology gap out there. But we’re encouraged by students using their cell phones and filming themselves in their workouts and we cannot minimize the positive power of coaches,” Jenkins added. As for developing players who may or may not have been discovered, Jenkins stresses training and practice.“Not necessarily the type where you have the whole team there, you’re giving them the platform. We have Zoom and Microsoft as opportunities to connect, where coaches are saying this is your workout,” she explained.Colleges are still filling their rosters and NCSA is still getting contacted about athletes. Some are traveling, playing tournaments in other states. And there's a new dynamic out there. All of a sudden, there's time to network. To figure out what school you really want, or perhaps, to work on your SAT score. To get your grades up. To properly fill out that college application.“Can you build relationships with colleges? Absolutely. If there is a delay it's maybe in certain sports that haven’t developed a virtual, but every college coach out there is having to develop more virtually because of the dead period of when college coaches can physically see players play in person has been pushed back for months,” Jenkins said. Some athletes are taking community college courses so they have a leg up for college should they decide to further their athletic career. And Jenkins says, a word of advice for students and families, this is a small time out in your lifetime. Which means, keep your eye on the ball and your focus on your grades and everything else will fall into place. 3788
