Those comments drew some criticism from one of Sanders’ top opponents.“Make no mistake: Bernie Sanders’ comments on Fidel Castro are a part of a larger pattern throughout his life to embrace autocratic leaders and governments across the globe,” Cristóbal Alex, a senior adviser for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign said. “His admiration for elements of Castro’s dictatorship or at least willingness to look past Cuba’s human rights violations is not just dangerous, it is deeply offensive to the many people in Florida, New Jersey, and across the country that have fled political persecution and sought refuge in the United States,” Alex added. Sanders’ comments came days after the Washington Post reported that U.S. intelligence services notified the Sanders campaign that the Russian government was attempting to interfere in the Democratic nomination process in Sanders’ favor. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Vice President Mike Pence says 21 people aboard a mammoth cruise ship off the California coast have tested positive for the new coronavirus, including 19 crew members. Pence said Friday that the federal government is working with California officials on a plan to bring the 951-foot Grand Princess to a non-commercial port this weekend. The 3,500 passengers and crew members will be tested for the virus. Friday's test results come amid evidence the vessel was the breeding ground for a deadly cluster of at least 10 cases during its previous voyage.The ship off California was returning to San Francisco after visiting Hawaii. Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday that the ship won’t come to shore until the passengers are appropriately assessed. The ship is owned by Princess Cruises, which also owns the Diamond Princess, the ship that was quarantined for two weeks in Yokohama, Japan, last month because of the virus. In the end, about 700 of the 3,700 people aboard became infected. Meanwhile, the death toll from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus, has risen to 14, with all but one victim in Washington state. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is proposing a condensed, two-day calendar for opening arguments in President Donald Trump's impeachment trial, ground rules that are raising objections from Democrats on the eve of the landmark proceedings. The Republican leader outlined the process in a four-page resolution that will be voted on as one of the first orders of business when senators convene Tuesday. It also pushes off any votes on witnesses until later in the process, rather than up front, as Democrats had demanded. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed his opposition to McConnell's proposals late Monday. "We will be able to introduce amendments and we will introduce a whole series of amendments for witnesses, for documents and other ways to straighten out what McConnell has done and make it a real trial," Schumer said.Each side will be given 24 hours over the course of two days to make their arguments. That means that opening arguments will conclude by the weekend. Arguments are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday. It appears that each day's sessions will not end until 1 a.m., at the earliest. Decorum rules dictate that senators will not be permitted to talk or use electronic devices during arguments.
