SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The group of individuals assigned with making a recommendation on the appropriateness of the Aztec mascot will not be named, according to San Diego State University officials.SDSU Sally Roush says intends to make decision about the mascot no later than May 31 after a recommendation made by the ‘Aztec task force’ April 30.RELATED: Should SDSU get rid of it's Aztec Warrior mascot?The task force includes five students, five staff members, five members of the community and two at-large appointees.SDSU said earlier in February they would name those on the task force, then later decided to keep their identities private.Some students question why a public university funded by taxpayers is hiding those responsible for a major decision.RELATED: SDSU Senate passes resolution to retire Aztec Warrior mascot “If we’re going to come to real solution, we need to know who is on that task force,” said SDSU Senior Brandon Jones, “it’s going go a long way in identifying the legitimacy of this task force.”SDSU defended their decision in a statement:"Until the conclusion of their work, names of this task force will be withheld in an effort to allow them the opportunity to deliberate, research and present their final recommendations without disruption." 1288
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The brand new Continental Apartment complex in Little Italy isn't like its upscale neighbors.It's made up of studios, some smaller than 400 square feet, and offers very little parking. That's why the starting rent is "just" ,550 a month, about 35 percent below market for the trendy area. "The rent is high in San Diego because of simple math - supply and demand," said Jonathan Segal, the architect who designed The Continental.Segal says costly approval delays and fees are contributing to that very supply crunch. The Continental, no exception, was delayed for two years. Segal says he paid almost million in fees for the building. But he's specifically perplexed by how the city charges what are called Developer Impact Fees. The money goes to uses like parks, fire, library and transportation.The city charges as much as ,000 per unit, depending on location, not size. That's why the city fee on developers could be disproportionately impacting rent prices for smaller units. In other words, if a developer takes a building and creates 40 apartments, that developer would have to pay that fee 40 times. Alternatively, if that same developers takes that same building and does just one large unit, that developer only pays the fee once. Now, there's a growing push at City Hall to change how the city calculates the impact fee. This week, a city council committee held a preliminary discussion on the fee's future. One option, endorsed by City Councilman Scott Sherman, is to do it by square foot. That way, building more, smaller units won't increase costs on developers - and ultimately renters or buyers. "If you were to do it by a square foot process, then a developer would come in and say, 'you know what? I can build two units at 0,000, instead of one at 0,000,'" Sherman said. A 2016 report from the housing commission said flat fees create a disincentive for developers to create more, smaller units that could help ease the housing crunch. Segal says changing how the fee is calculated could give him more latitude to offer lower rents. "I may be able to reduce my rent because I want to be more aggressive," he said. Segal paid about ,500 per unit in developer impact fees for the Continental, totaling 0,000 to the city. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The new community plan for Kearny Mesa, given final approval by the City Council earlier this week, takes effect Friday. Several properties are being rezoned with 27,000 new housing units planned for those parcels.“My vision is that within five years, you’ll be able to live on Convoy, enjoy the restaurants and the shops that are on Convoy, and work in a job in Kearny Mesa, all in one community," City Councilmember Chris Cate, who represents the area, told ABC 10News ahead of the final vote.Cate says the city is trying to encourage a"live-work" village concept for many San Diego neighborhoods, especially those that are major job centers, such as Kearny Mesa. The idea is that by creating housing and recreational possibilities in the same communities where people work, they will have to commute less. That has numerous benefits across the city, including less traffic and car pollution.It is anticipated that many of the new projects will replace aging strip malls whose parking lots remain vacant much of the time. Cate hopes the areas around Convoy St., Clairemont Mesa Blvd., and Aero Dr. will become similar to the feel of Little Italy.Because parameters have already been set for how many homes will go onto each affected parcel, as well as other necessities such as pathways, street improvements, and parks, there will not be the same drawn-out approval process that has been seen with other recent attempts at development. Cate says that means developers who acquire the land will be able to move quickly, as long as their design stays within the parameters of the community plan. “They already have an understanding of what these projects will look like, what’s required of them, where different pathways or parks will go. All these things are already agreed to on the front end," Cate said.Cate says he anticipates that the first projects could break ground in 2021. 1910
