Amazon said that beginning Tuesday, customers at its two Amazon Go stores in Seattle can use a device that will scan their palms before entering the store that will sync to their credit card with their hand signature.The company announced the launch in a blog post."We believe Amazon One has broad applicability beyond our retail stores, so we also plan to offer the service to third parties like retailers, stadiums, and office buildings so that more people can benefit from this ease and convenience in more places," Dilip Kumar, Vice President Physical Retail & Technology at Amazon, said in the blog post.The way the contactless device Amazon One works is that customers will insert their credit card into the device, hover their hand over the scanner, and follow the prompts to associate the card with their palm signature built for them by the machine.The company said customers could use both palms or one to enroll. Once a consumer enrolls, they'll need to place their palm over the Amazon One device at the entrance.The company plans to add more of the devices in the coming months to other Amazon stores.Amazon says you don't need an Amazon account to use the Amazon One device.The company said the device "protected by multiple security controls and palm images are never stored on the Amazon One device," according to the FAQ on its site."The images are encrypted and sent to a highly secure area we custom-built in the cloud where we create your palm signature," Kumar said. 1499

Allstate Insurance announced on Wednesday that they are planning to lay off 3,800 employees.In a press release, the company said the layoffs were part of a restructuring plan to lower costs.Allstate will make the cuts in the sales, claims, and support departments."Implementing this plan is difficult as we still deal with the impact of the pandemic but necessary to provide customers the best value," said Tom Wilson, Chair, President, and CEO of Allstate in the press release. "We have expanded transition support for impacted employees including prioritized internal hiring, extended medical coverage, expanded retraining support, and help in employment searches."According to the Wall Street Journal, the layoffs cover approximately 8% of Allstate's 46,000 employees.Roughly 1,000 of those laid off are linked to the pandemic-related refunds the insurance company is giving to customers, WSJ reported.Back in April, Wilson told CNBC that the pandemic has resulted in people driving less, and as a result, there are fewer accidents and claims.Allstate reduced policy-holders' bills back in March, like many insurers. 1127

After the University of North Carolina opted last week to hold all undergraduate courses virtually, the university has seen 504 confirmed coronavirus cases since last Monday.The school’s student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel, first reported the significant outbreak.In the last week, the school’s COVID-19 positivity rate increased to 31.3% of all COVID-19 tests. The week before, it was 13.6%. On week ending August 9, the COVID-19 positivity rate was 2.8%, which gave university officials some confidence that the university could safely reopen.But as cases began to see an uptick last week, the university suspended all in-person learning for undergraduates just a week into the start of the semester. The university also encouraged on-campus residents to return home.
