We have to find a way to come together, bridge divisions, and focus on solutions that help the millions who are struggling. I am raising my hand and committing to working with President-elect Biden and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in Congress to do exactly that. pic.twitter.com/EXWLWKmBdp— Fred Upton #WearYourMask (@RepFredUpton) November 7, 2020 368
WEEKI WACHEE, Fla. — Searing pain and immediate swelling were the first signs that 6-year-old Kyden Debyah needed immediate medical attention. While playing in his backyard Monday morning, Kyden said he felt what he thought was a bee sting his right foot near his big toe. Then his mom saw a snake coiled up underneath the tire swing Kyden was about to get on.“I heard him scream 'My leg, my leg,'” Amber Debyah said. Debyah called 911 and grabbed a rake to kill the snake. By the time she came back she said she knew it was bad.“His foot was double the size. It was really hot, red,” Debyah said.First responders told her to try and get the snake so they could identify it and figure out what type of antivenin he needed. First responders brought the dead snake to the emergency room and doctors began administering antivenin for a pygmy rattlesnake bite. In all, Kyden got 18 vials before the swelling subsided and his symptoms started to go away. The entire time Debyah worried if her son would lose his leg or worse.“I really feel he got lucky after reading other people's stories,” Debyah said. “I feel like if it would have bit him fully with both fangs, it would’ve been a lot worse.”Only one fang injected venom into Kyden’s body. “He was in great spirits the whole time. He was laughing and joking I mean other than the pain in his foot he had no symptoms, no fever, no vomiting. Normal Kyden, except for the pain,” Debyah said. Kyden might have a low-grade fever, sore joints, rashes, but nothing that will cause permanent damage, Debyah said. Each vial of antivenin costs around ,000. The family has insurance but it does not cover snake bites. The insurance company said their contracted cost for the antivenin will be adjusted but could be anywhere from ,000 to ,000.Kyden is still allowed to play in the backyard, with one new rule, he keeps his boots on at all times.“So grateful", Kyle Debyah, Kyden’s dad said. “You want to try and be strong and focused to better assess everything but I was worried.”The family set up a Gofundme if you would like to help them cover the cost of the antivenin. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Unlike in many parts of the world, Election Day in America isn’t a day most people get off from work or school, and it’s not for a lack of trying in the past.“There've been several efforts to make it a holiday, at least for the five previous Congresses, including this one,” said Matthew Weil, who runs The Elections Project at the Bipartisan Policy Center. Those proposed bills to make Election Day a federal holiday have gone nowhere though.Coincidentally, America also has one of the lowest voter participation rates in the developed world, which was about 56 percent in 2016.Over the years, though, some states have made it a state or civic holiday, most recently this year in Illinois and Virginia. In California, state law requires employers to give employees at least two paid hours to vote on Election Day. However, that’s not the case in most places.Weil said whether or not employers need to give you time to vote on Election Day, varies state by state.“In states that don't have robust voting by mail options, or early voting options, Election Day being the only option isn't good,” Weil said. “The good news is the trend has been toward expanding options over the past 10 years.”Those options include early voting, which millions of voters have already done in the 2020 election, including Kevin Jackson in Ohio.“Don’t just wait. Plan your vote,” Jackson said. “Get down here and get it done.”The key to moving forward, experts say, is for all states to offer as many opportunities to vote as possible. Those changes could spread even more now because of the coronavirus pandemic.“I think it's got to be something that we're just not going back to how we used to vote,” said Weil. “I think that this will accelerate changes going forward.”Recently, some high-profile employers like Coca-Cola and Twitter, as well as universities like Brown and American, have decided to give Election Day off to their employees and students, not just so they can vote, but to also encourage them to volunteer as poll workers. 2046
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration will begin allowing so-called “Dreamer” immigrants to renew their permits to remain and work in the U.S. for a year while it reviews a Supreme Court ruling and the underlying legality of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.A White House official confirmed the announcement Tuesday. Renewals for the Obama-era program, which covers hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children, had been halted as the Trump administration pushed to end the program. The Supreme Court ruled earlier this month that Trump failed to follow appropriate procedure when he tried to end the program, but affirmed his ability to do so. The White House has been studying the ruling and devising plans to try again to end DACA — though it was not immediately clear whether the politically sensitive move would be undertaken before November's election. The administration will continue not to accept new applications for the program. 1001
