Large U.S. employers saw their smallest health care cost increase in more than two decades due to COVID-19, and workers may benefit from that next year, according to the consulting firm Mercer.Patients stayed home and out of doctor’s offices this year to avoid the global pandemic, and that led to an average 1.9% cost hike for companies with 500 or more employees, Mercer found in a national survey.Those employers were expecting a 3.5% increase, said Beth Umland, Mercer’s director of health and benefits research.The lowest cost increase since 1997 will help many large employers avoid raising deductibles or doing other things to shift costs to workers in 2021, Umland said.Many companies also will spend some of what they saved adding programs that help improve the health of those covered by their plans. That could include expanding telemedicine, improving access to behavioral health care like therapy or adding programs that help people with a specific condition such as diabetes.Large employers pay their own health care claims. (KGTV) - On Wednesday, a team of researchers from the UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography will begin a 9-day exploration of the deepest parts of Southern California's coast.Sailing on the Exploration Vessel Nautilus, they'll use a Remote Operated Vehicle called "Hercules" to dive to the bottom of the ocean."Part of our mission is purely exploration," says Professor Lisa Levin, one of the researchers on the trip. "We're visiting places nobody's been to."The team will search 9 spots off the coast of Los Angeles and San Diego, located on an area of the Continental Slope called the "Borderlands." With various canyons, ridges, and seamounts, the depths range from 1,300 to 6,500 feet."We've selected sites that were dredged sometimes in the 1930s and 40s," says Levin. "Nobody's actually been down and looked with their own eyes, or with the aid of a camera to see what actually lives down there so that that's the exploration mode we're in."The researchers hope to collect samples of marine life and also minerals like phosphorus and manganese. They'll also look for bacteria in the sediment.Once collected, the team will study if any of it has potential for use by humans, either as medicine or other mineral-based purposes.The exploration will also help establish a baseline of what the ecosystem looks like now, so it can be protected in the future."We'll be looking at the microbes that live in sediments," says Levin. "To look at the potential of these microbes to produce chemicals that can cure cancer or provide aid in industrial processes. There's a variety of ways we humans might be able to use this."Part of the mission will also allow other people to take part in the exploration. LAKE CHARLES, La. — A Confederate statue has fallen victim to Hurricane Laura.The South’s Defenders monument has stood since 1915 outside a courthouse in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where local authorities voted 10-4 this month to keep it in place.The statue was reportedly erected to honor Confederate soldiers from the area and other towns across the South. Critics call it a symbol of racism that glorifies slavery.But a Calcasieu Parish official said they asked for public comments, and got 878 written responses against relocating the monument, and only 67 in favor of moving it.Now the pedestal is empty, and the Confederate statue is in pieces on the ground, victim to a Category 4 hurricane that struck the city early Thursday. 740

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A La Mesa woman is recovering after she says she was attacked during the protest on Saturday night. Eleyna Bedolla said she was not protesting and she is not sure if the man that attacked her was a protester. Bedolla told 10News she heard commotion in her neighborhood so she went for a walk to check out what was happening. When she noticed the demonstration, she said she started to make her way back home along Palm Avenue. That's when a man approached her with a baseball bat and asked her, "Who the hell do you think you are?"Bedolla said she told the man she was trying to get home, but she said he grabbed her and threw her into the street, hitting her with a bat in the leg. He also tried to hit her head, but Bedolla said she was able to protect herself with her hand. She suffered a broken hand and large bruising on her legs. According to Bedolla, La Mesa police were nearby and officers were able to arrest the man. She wants others to be careful when deciding to go out and protest. 10News reached out to the La Mesa Police Department to ask about the arrest, but so far have not heard back. 1139

LAS VEGAS — Neighbors living in a southwest Las Vegas neighborhood were shocked to a see a home in their area vandalized with swastikas.Morley Fulgencio said he noticed the swastikas all over his garage, his driveway and the steps leading up to his front door when he was taking his daughter to school Thursday morning."I was flabbergasted," Fulgencio said.After a short drive around the neighborhood, Fulgencio realized that only his house was the one vandalized. He said he has no idea why his home was singled out.Fulgencio said he hopes this was just a prank. Neighbors rallied together to show support, knocking on his door to help. Neighbor Brian Judd even arranged for crews to clean up the vandalism for free. Fulgencio says he's been overwhelmed by the support, and that it shows the idea of Vegas Strong. "It shows whatever hatred is out there, it's outweighed by human kindness," Fulgencio said. No one has been arrested, and the incident remains under investigation according to police.  1062
