Federal authorities are investigating after officials in Massachusetts confirm that a ballot drop box in Boston was set on fire early Sunday morning.According to WCVB-TV in Boston, a ballot drop box out front of the Boston Public Library's main branch in Copley Square was set ablaze around 4 a.m. ET on Sunday morning. Crews eventually extinguished the fire with water.According to WCVB, an "incendiary device" was used to start the fire. WBTS-TV reports that the FBI is investigated in the incident."For the next several weeks, it is a top priority of our offices to help maintain the integrity of the election process in Massachusetts by aggressively enforcing federal election laws," the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office in Massachusetts said in a joint statement.Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin also both condemned the incident in a joint statement.“What happened in the early hours of this morning to the ballot drop box in Copley Square is a disgrace to democracy, a disrespect to the voters fulfilling their civic duty, and a crime,” the statement read. “Our first and foremost priority is maintaining the integrity of our elections process and ensuring transparency and trust with our voters, and any effort to undermine or tamper with that process must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We ask voters not to be intimidated by this bad act, and remain committed to making their voices heard in this and every election.”Officials later determined that there were 122 ballots inside the drop box at the time of the wire. Of those ballots, 87 were legible and able to processed. Thirty-five ballots were damaged, and WBTS reported that "up to 10" cannot be counted.Officials say any Massachusetts voter who dropped off their ballot at the library between 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday and 4 a.m. ET on Sunday should check the status of their ballot on the state's tracking website or contact the city's Elections Department.The incident comes just over a week after a ballot box in southern California was set on fire in an apparent act of arson. 2109

Aside from teaching water safety and rescues, this year, Encinitas lifeguards are busy enforcing the public health order.Everyone loves the beach. But no one likes restrictions, especially on a holiday weekend, celebrating those who sacrificed their lives to get us our freedoms. But times are different now. "We are enforcing," Captain Lary Giles of the Encinitas Marine Safety Center said. They have summer lifeguard tower staffing. But this year, they also have a special COVID-team and Sheriff's deputies driving up and down the coastline. "There's a lot of educational contact... Several thousand a day from the team," Captain Giles said. The three main points they drill into visitors are: Masks required, keep a 6-foot social distance, and no stopping or gathering. It gets a bit tricky on the city's 4-foot staircases that take beachgoers to the sand. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — An Escondido restaurant was closed by the county this week after its owner allegedly refused to comply with health orders.County officials issued a notice to Hernandez Hideaway to close until it is able to adhere to coronavirus-related health orders for social distancing and sanitation standards.The order states that shortly after the county authorized restaurants to reopen on May 21, the county's Department of Environmental Health conducted an inspection on May 29 and found social distancing and sanitation protocols were not in place, and employees were not wearing facial coverings.On June 12, 21, and 23, San Diego Sheriff's deputies visited the restaurant and asked for voluntary compliance.Owner Rick Stevens declined to comment to ABC 10News."Mr. Stevens admitted that he was not compliant and state he will continue to operate without these COVID preventative measures and will not require staff to wear face coverings," the ordered stated, referencing a June 23 visit by county officials.In order to reopen, the restaurant will have to prepare a revised reopening plan and submit it to the county for approval.This is the county's second restaurant forced to close in violation of health orders. In May, Pacific Beach's El Prez was closed by the county after social media videos surfaced showing crowds of guests, many not social distancing or wearing facial coverings. El Prez has since reopened with new policies to ensure it adheres to the public health orders on distancing, masks, and sanitation. 1550
