WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former President Barack Obama released an essay Monday on how he thinks Americans can sustain the momentum of the George Floyd protests to bring about real change. Obama first acknowledged that the protests that have popped up across the U.S. represent a genuine and legitimate frustration over the failure to reform police practices and the broader criminal justice system. He also pointed out that while the overwhelming majority of protesters have been peaceful, a small minority resorted to violence in various forms, putting innocent people at risk and compounding the destruction of neighborhoods that are already struggling. “I saw an elderly black woman being interviewed today in tears because the only grocery store in her neighborhood had been trashed,” wrote Obama. “If history is any guide, that store may take years to come back. So, let’s not excuse violence, or rationalize it, or participate in it. If we want our criminal justice system, and American society at large, to operate on a higher ethical code, then we have to model that code ourselves.”Obama goes on to argue that protests alone won’t bring about the change that is needed to stop police brutality. He says it will a combination of activism and getting people out to vote for people who care about police reform, in local and national elections alike.“So, the bottom line is this: if we want to bring about real change, then the choice isn’t between protest and politics. We have to do both,” wrote Obama. “We have to mobilize to raise awareness, and we have to organize and cast our ballots to make sure that we elect candidates who will act on reform.”Lastly, Obama called on activists to make their demands for criminal justice and police reform specific, so it will be harder for elected officials to “offer lip service” and then fall back into business as usual once protests stop. “The content of that reform agenda will be different for various communities. A big city may need one set of reforms; a rural community may need another,” he wrote. “Some agencies will require wholesale rehabilitation; others should make minor improvements.”Obama says every law enforcement agency should have clear policies, including an independent body that conducts investigations of alleged misconduct. Two uniformed police officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were denied service Thursday night at The Lodge at Cactus near Cactus Avenue and Southern Highlands Parkway.A post about the incident has received a lot of attention on social media.The graveyard police officers had gone into the restaurant for food and the bartender reportedly told them that the restaurant did not serve "you guys" anymore. The police union sent its membership a letter earlier today that called the incident disgusting and offensive.There was an incident and The Lodge has since apologized. The director of operations for The Lodge says they welcome all first responders and have been serving them for 30 years.The union says that it accepts the apology and believes it was an isolated incident involving one employee. LVMPD also sent the following statement to the media:An incident occurred on February 13, 2020 where two on-duty LVMPD officers were refused service at The Lodge bar/restaurant when they stopped for lunch. While we consider this behavior unacceptable, we firmly believe that the refusal was an employee acting solely on his own, and it does not represent the viewpoint of the establishment. According to management at The Lodge it welcomes law enforcement at its business. The involved employee has now been suspended from work. Unrest in Minneapolis continued on Thursday as the Minnesota National Guard was activated as protests and looting continued in the city. Nearly 500 members of the Guard have been activated. "Our mission is to protect life, preserve property and the right to peacefully demonstrate. A key objective is to ensure fire departments are able to respond to calls," the National Guard said late Thursday.The protests were sparked following the death of George Floyd, a black Minnesota man who died in police custody after a police officer held a knee against Floyd’s neck for several minutes. Floyd’s death caused outrage from politicians and civil rights activists as the public revisited tensions between police and the black community. While protest organizers have called for peaceful demonstrations, some have not heeded the call. The tensions reached a fever pitch on Wednesday as several Minneapolis businesses were looted. As protests grew on Thursday, Gov. Tim Walz called for the assistance of the National Guard to handle the protests and riots. "We are ready and prepared to answer the Governor's request. We are currently in process of assigning and preparing units to respond," said Maj. Gen. Jon Jensen.The protests continued to grow late Thursday. U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wisconsin, wants to give citizens the option to donate to building a border wall on the United States-Mexico border and has introduced legislation to allow for crowdsourced fundraising. Grothman announced in a news release that he has introduced a bill called "The People’s Border Wall Fund Act" which would allow the public to contribute to building a border wall. The federal government is in a partial shutdown while Democrats and Republican President Donald Trump are at a standstill over a spending plan that would include a package to build a border wall. Grothman’s plan would create a trust in the Department of Treasury that allows for public donations to be used to build a border wall. 737
