SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A gaping hole in an Allied Gardens hillside has many residents worried of a potential catastrophe.Outside of John and Sandy Knox’s bedroom window is a massive sinkhole that has already swallowed up their tree. The couple fears their home could be next.A broken-down drain pipe that is 50 feet deep and 60 feet wide is believed to be the cause of the hole.On Tuesday, ABC 10News spotted City of San Diego crews taking measurements and assessing the sinkhole.John Knox said he owns his mobile home, but a property management company owns the land it sits on and might be on the hook for fixing it.According to Knox, the management company has ignored his calls regarding the hole.ABC 10News learned the city is now investigating. 755

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A gray whale spotted frolicking in shallow waters attracted dolphins and a crowd of swimmers and surfers in the ocean off Mission Beach Wednesday. Lifeguards got a call about the whale possible tangled in fishing line about noon, an official said. A lifeguard who swam toward the whale to investigate determined it was free.The gray whale was young, possibly a year and a half old, whale watcher and photographer Domenic Biagini told 10News. Gray whales are starting to migrate north from Mexico during the spring. There is a good chance San Diegans will see more mothers and juvenile whales closer to shore, Biagini says, because the shallow waters keep the whales safe from orcas. "It's some of the most exciting times for us as professional whale watchers to see these animals, but it's also when we see the most conflicts with these animals coming in with people," said Biagini.Sky10 was above the whale as a group of surfers and swimmers approached it near Mission Beach, coming close to the giant mammal.Biagini warns that can be extremely dangerous for humans and can also stress the animal."These gray whales, despite not being the largest of the great whales we see out here, they can still get 50 feet long and weigh up to 80,000 pounds, so you're talking very large animals. All it takes is one flick of the tail and you have a catastrophic accident. And moms are naturally protective of their young," said Biagini. The National Atmospheric and Oceanographic Administration adopted in 2011 new regulations under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act to encourage the public to ‘be whale wise.’ The NOAA guidelines include:DO NOT APPROACH or position your vessel closer than 200 yards to any killer whale in the U.S. DO NOT APPROACH or get closer than 100 yards to any other marine mammals or birds, whether on the water or on land.BE CAUTIOUS, COURTEOUS and QUIET when around areas of known or suspected marine wildlife activity, in the water or at haul-outs and bird colonies on land. Especially from May to September during breeding, nesting and seal pupping seasons.LOOK in all directions before planning your approach or departure from viewing wildlife.SLOW DOWN: reduce speed to less than 7 knots when within 400 yards of the nearest marine mammal and reduce your engine’s noise and vessel’s wake.ALWAYS approach and depart from the side, moving parallel to their direction of the animal’s travel. If the animal(s) are approaching you, cautiously move out of the way and avoid abrupt course changes. DO NOT approach from the front or from behind.IF your vessel is not in compliance with the 100 yards approach guideline (#1), place engine in neutral and allow animals to pass.PAY ATTENTION and move away, slowly and cautiously at the first sign of disturbance or agitation from any animal.STAY on the OFFSHORE side of the whales when traveling close to shore.ALWAYS avoid going through groups of porpoises or dolphins and hold course and reduce speed gradually to discourage bow or stern-riding.LIMIT your viewing time to 30 minutes or less. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Thunderstorms are occurring Wednesday throughout San Diego County in the midst of a heat wave.Coastal areas, the inland valleys, the deserts and the mountains will all have a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.A high pressure system hanging over the Four Corners region is causing our heat wave while monsoonal moisture from Mexico is generating precipitation. Some light rain could accompany thunderstorms Wednesday before heavier showers are expected on Thursday, Martin said.A chance of thunderstorms will continue through Friday evening in the mountains and through Thursday evening in the deserts, while the thunderstorm activity is expected to clear out of coastal and inland valley areas by Wednesday night.Check your 10News Pinpoint Weather forecastThe chance of measurable precipitation has been set at 20 percent Wednesday for the inland valleys, coastal areas and the deserts, according to the NWS. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Weather forecasters are warning of "near-critical fire weather conditions" Sunday evening through Tuesday morning in San Diego County because of developing Santa Ana winds."Areas west of the mountains will see a sharp rise in temperatures early this week," the National Weather Service said, "with coastal locations potentially experiencing their hottest conditions so far this year."Inland areas and especially deserts will remain very warm through Thursday, the NWS said, before widespread cooling takes hold late in the week.Early morning satellite images showed widespread clouds extending to the coastal slopes, but much thinner than Saturday and with less uniform coverage, forecasters said. With clouds breaking up, clearer skies Sunday afternoon will allow temperatures to rise several degrees higher than on Saturday.Santa Ana winds will strengthen on Monday, with maximum gusts of 40 to 45 mph as humidity plummets, resulting in elevated fire weather conditions, the NWS said. Highs near 80 and 90 for coastal and inland valleys are expected."Model guidance suggests coastal highs on Tuesday could be the hottest so far this year, climbing well into the 80s." forecasters said. "Depending on the timing of the return to onshore flow, it's conceivable for some coastal cities to reach the low 90s.""All in all, temperatures will be around 20 degrees above normal at the coast, and 10-15 degrees above normal for inland valleys, where temperatures may near 100 degrees in spots," they said.Off the coast of San Diego County, gusty winds and large combined seas will create hazardous boating conditions through Monday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A cold winter storm is set to bring rain and snow to San Diego County starting Monday, according to the National Weather Service.The agency says the San Diego County mountains could see as much as six inches of snow, sparking a winter storm watch from 8 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday.The heaviest snow is expected to fall above 5,500 feet with lighter amounts down to 4,500 feet.RELATED: Check today's forecast in your areaMeanwhile, other parts of the county could see much-needed rain totaling as much as one inch. Thunderstorms are also possible, the agency said.A beach hazards statement was issued Saturday ahead of the storm. Waves and surf of four to seven feet are expected with sets as high as eight feet.
