SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some places of worship around San Diego County appear to be planning to continue holding services on their property despite the state’s order regarding indoor operations.On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced pandemic-related restrictions for certain businesses and activities, and places of worship were included on California’s list.Via a Wednesday evening livestream, Kearny Mesa-based Awaken Church broadcasted their service in which there were people in attendance. On their website, Awaken Church promoted in-person women’s prayer meetings held at each of their campuses.ABC 10News asked church leaders to clarify the meeting, and an Awaken pastor said they were holding a prayer protest.At the church’s Balboa Avenue campus, a disclaimer is posted on doors that reads, in part: “By entering this building where COVID-19 virus may possibly exist, despite efforts and attempts at utilizing and employing CDC Public Health Guidelines, you take full responsibility for the decision to attend our services and activities.”A viewer brought a Facebook post by Lighthouse Baptist Church to ABC 10News’ attention. In the post, the Lemon Grove church says, in part: “We are aware of the current mandates of our Governor and County. But, by God’s grace will continue with their current schedule of live worship services on the property.”It’s unclear whether those services will be inside or outside.ABC 10News reached out to both churches for further comment, but neither have returned calls as of late Thursday morning.A woman who asked not to be identified told ABC 10News that her church also invited her back. She said she believes the places of worship that stay open are doing more harm than good.“They want things to be back to normal, everyone does. But they aren’t being realistic about it. I think they need to wait this out and be patient and slow the spread and it will be safer for parishioners, and the community and U.S. at large,” the woman said.As far as the enforcement of the state’s order, if the place of worship falls under San Diego County jurisdiction, it will be up to the sheriff’s department.If it’s within the city, it will be up to the police agency in that city to enforce. 2227

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting Friday, San Diegans can help decide the future of the Sports Arena site.The city owns 48 acres around the arena and plans to redevelop the area. The public is being asked to provide their input as well."I think most of us have been over there," says Councilmember Jennifer Campbell. "We enjoy the sports arena and the entertainment that goes on there. But we've also noticed that the neighborhood is in disrepair."RELATED: City plans for overhaul of Midway District's sports arena siteLeases on the land expire in 2020 and the city has already asked developers for their proposals. On Friday, the city will launch a website, sandiego.gov/sportsarenaopenhouse, to let people look at up to four proposals and give feedback."I haven't even seen (the plans) yet," says Campbell. "So I'm really excited that tomorrow I get to take a look at the proposals and see what it looks like."The new Midway/Pacific Highway Community Plan, which passed in 2018, allows for more denser development in the area. It calls for a mixed-use of homes, retail, parks and entertainment. Right now, the City Council is debating putting a measure on the November ballot to remove the 30-foot height restriction from the 900 acres included in the Midway/Pacific Highway community. Campbell and Councilmember Chris Cate proposed the idea, to maximize the opportunity for development.RELATED: Gaslamp Quarter thoroughfare may become a promenade"The water table is so close to the ground, where the sports arena is that if you don't build up in that area, it's very hard to build anything at a 30-foot limit," says Campbell.But, she stresses that the ballot measure won't allow for skyscrapers or high rise buildings. Instead, it will revert the area back to the limits in the City Municipal Code, between 30-100 feet depending on the parcel of land."We don't want really huge buildings," she says. "We won't have skyscrapers, we won't be losing the character of San Diego. It should make it possible to have a beautiful area with housing, jobs, walkways, bike paths, parks, and entertainment complex there in the sports arena area."The Council still has to vote to put the height-limit measure on the ballot.Campbell also says that whichever developer wins the proposal will have to either renovate the current arena or build a new one. 2927

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo and Safari Park hope to reopen "in the coming weeks" now that California has released guidance for zoos to open their gates starting Friday.Last week, the state released guidance for county's approved for accelerated reopenings to open businesses like zoos, family entertainment centers, gyms, bars and wineries, and more starting June 12.(The state's criteria for sectors can be found here.)In a statement to 10News, the zoo said staff are reviewing the state's guidance to plan how to best reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic:"We are delighted to receive word from the Governor letting us know that the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park will be able to open this month. We have just received information from the State regarding the requirements and guidelines for us to re-open and are reviewing this document so we can determine next steps to open safely and responsibly for our community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released a photo Friday of a suspect wanted in the death of a woman in Point Loma.Joe Bennette Conway, 41, shot the unidentified woman in the parking lot of 4013 W. Point Loma Blvd. late on the night of October 9, police said.911 dispatchers received a call about the shooting. Police units found a woman with a gunshot wound to her upper body. Paramedics transported the woman to the hospital, where she died.Police identified Conway as the murder suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest. Conway is 5’7” tall and 150 pounds.
