HANGZHOU, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Rescue efforts are continuing to save a worker trapped 18 meters under sea surface for almost 18 hours in Jiaxing Harbor, east China's Zhejiang Province, local authorities said.The worker, 43, surnamed Fan from central China's Hubei Province, was stuck at the bottom of a steel shielding canister in which he was working at 9 a.m. Thursday. The shielding canister deformed under sudden increase of hydraulic pressure from flood tide, according to local media report.The shielding canister, a part of an offshore platform, is one meter in diameter. Fan was working at the bottom of the canister that joins a cement column when the incident happened.Rescue staff said, "We are making slow progress because of complex geological conditions. The deformed section, about two to four meters under the sea surface, has been squeezed to only 3cm wide at the narrowest part."Thankfully, the shielding canister has not fractured, though seriously deformed.Rescue workers have decided to cut the cement column off the seabed to lift the shielding canister.Rescue efforts started at 10 a.m. Thursday. Food, including ham sausages and drinking water were supplied to the worker, through a flexible pipe. Fan asked for some cigarettes.Fan's family members have arrived at the site, praying for him at the bank.

DUSHANBE, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- China and Tajikistan will enhance high-level contacts, expand exchanges and cooperation in various fields to fully develop their relations of good-neighborliness, friendship and cooperation, said a joint communique signed on Thursday by the two countries.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao signed the communique with his Tajik counterpart Akil Akilov in his two-day visit to the Central Asian nation. BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) has ordered measures to offset the impact of inflation on "people with difficulties" to ensure their ability to subsist, especially during the New Year and the Spring Festival.Rising food costs alongside other factors have been driving up China's inflation. For instance, the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 5.1 percent last month, hitting a 28-month high.In a recent notice to local civil affairs authorities, the MCA ordered "effective measures" to minimize the impact of inflation on low-income groups and other groups of people having financial difficulties.Civil affairs authorities should set proper living allowances for these groups by assessing the impact of rising prices on their lives, the notice said.Further, a mechanism that ensures living allowances are raised at the same rate as rising prices should be established, and the amount of living allowances should be raised.The notice also ordered local civil affairs authorities to rescue the homeless in cities and help them throughout the winter.The Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese Lunar New Year, will fall on Feb.3, 2011. It is the most important festival for people of Chinese origin as it is an occasion for reunions of family members, relatives and friends.

BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- China Friday protested two Japanese local assembly members' landing on an isle of the Diaoyu Islands, saying the move seriously infringed China's territorial sovereignty."The Diaoyu Islands and its adjacent islets have been an integral part of the Chinese territory since ancient times," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu reiterated Friday night.According to reports, two members of the municipal assembly of Ishigaki, Okinawa Prefecture, landed on an islet of the Diaoyu Islands and stayed there for a while Friday morning.Jiang said China has lodged a solemn representation and voiced strong opposition to the Japanese side.
