(AP) — Scamp the Tramp will never win a beauty contest. But he's won an ugly one.The bug-eyed, dreadlocked pooch took top honors Friday night at the 31st annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest.Owner Yvonne Morones of Santa Rosa, California, won an appearance with Scamp on the "Today" show, ,500 in cash, another ,500 to donate to an animal shelter — and a trophy the size of a Rottweiler."He's Scamp the Champ, no longer Scamp the Tramp," Morones told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat after the victory. "I think the audience saw his beautiful spirit and everything he's given back to the community."Scamp makes volunteer visits to schoolchildren and a local senior citizens center.PHOTOS: The World's Ugliest Dog contestants and winners over the yearsThe street dog from Compton was rescued by Morones in 2014 after she spotted him on Pet Finder."It was on the way home that I knew I made the right choice," she said in a contest press statement. "There we were, two strangers in a car on the way home to a new start. Bob Marley was playing 'One Love' and I looked over and little Scamp was bobbing his head. It was like he knew he had found his forever home."Scamp beat out 18 other contestants who showed off their droopy tongues, bowed legs, perpetually confused looks and other strange attributes. The contestants got to walk the red carpet and preen for adoring fans at Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in the heart of Northern California wine country. The competition, as they say, was fierce.Second place went to Wild Thang, a Pekinese with beady eyes and a disturbing tongue, owned by Ann Lewis of Los Angeles.Third place went to Tostito, a Chihuahua whose damaged ears and droopy tongue make him look like he just stuck his foot into an electrical socket. Tostito, owned by Molly Horgan of Falmouth, Maine, also won the Spirit Award. This year's People's Choice Award went to Meatloaf, a bulldog mix with protruding teeth owned by Denae Pruner of Sacramento, California.Everyone knows ugliness is in the eye of the beholder and, to a dog lover, there is no such thing as an uncomely canine. Weird-looking, maybe. Appearance-challenged, perhaps. Or, as owners of ugly dogs like to say, "unique."Like Willie Wonka, a sweet-natured pit bull abandoned after he was discovered to have a genetic malady that left his legs so bowed he could barely walk. With a chuckle, publicist Christy Gentry said the competition wasn't just about being ugly."Judges are looking for special attributes like hanging tongues, slobber, drool (the more the better). Maybe unusual patches of skin or hair," she explained.Last year's champion, an English bulldog named Zsa Zsa, with a tongue that hung nearly to the ground, endeared herself to the judges when she sneezed and drooled all over them.Soon she was headed to New York for national TV appearances. Sadly, Zsa Zsa died about a year ago at age 9.Another previous winner, Nana, made the cover of an album by the Grateful Dead spinoff band Ratdog.Organizers say the contest isn't just skin-deep. It's also about bringing attention to the needs of rescue dogs. Most competitors were previously abandoned or rescued from kill shelters in the U.S., found abandoned on streets or seized from unscrupulous breeders."What we're really doing is we're showcasing dogs that have been rescued and adopted and brought into loving homes," Gentry said. "These are sort of spokesdogs for adoption." 3417

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Law enforcement officials Thursday were asking for the public's help in locating and identifying the suspect involved in two separate armed robberies this month. San Diego County Crime Stoppers was offering a reward of up to ,000 for information on the man, who's believed to have robbed a Game Stop in Serra Mesa on Dec. 19 and a Subway in Kearny Mesa four days later, according to the organization. The man is also believed to have been spotted at another Game Stop on the same day as the Subway robbery. Around 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 19, the suspect entered the Game Stop store on Murphy Canyon Road south of Aero Drive, where he lifted his shirt to display a silver revolver in his waistband and demanded money from the register, according to the Crime Stoppers news release. The clerk complied, and the man left the store on foot. Around 9:20 a.m. on Dec. 23, a man believed to be the same suspect entered the Game Stop on University Avenue east of 44th Street. An employee recognized the man from the earlier robbery and told another worker to call security. The suspect escaped from the store on foot. The same day, at about 11:20 a.m., it's believed that the same suspect entered a Subway restaurant near the intersection of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Mercury Street. He ``simulated'' that he had a gun in his waistband and demanded money from the register. The clerk complied, and the man again escaped on foot. The suspect was described as a Hispanic man in his early 30s, about 5-feet-7-inches to 5-feet-9-inches tall and 180 to 200 pounds. In the first case, he was wearing a white construction hat, construction glasses, a dark-blue or black bandana on his head underneath the hat, black pants and black tennis shoes with white soles, Crime Stoppers said.During the second and third cases, the suspect was wearing an Anaheim Angels baseball cap, sunglasses, a dark-colored shirt, black pants and gray tennis shoes. He was also wearing an orange construction vest in the first and third robberies. 2036

"Live PD," which airs on A&E and embeds cameras in police units throughout the United States, has been canceled by the network amid calls for reforms of police departments throughout the US.The episodes aired with a slight delay, but gave viewers a glimpse of police interactions with the public.Variety reported the show’s cancelation, and show host Dan Abrams confirmed the announcement on Twitter. Abrams said on Tuesday that the show would continue on.“Shocked & beyond disappointed about this,” Abrams tweeted. “To the loyal #LivePDNation please know I, we, did everything we could to fight for you, and for our continuing effort at transparency in policing. I was convinced the show would go on.”Live PD’s announcement comes one day after “Cops” ended its 31-year run on television.Live PD became embroiled in controversy this week when the show announced that it no longer retained footage of a police-involved fatality in Austin, Texas, from a 2019 incident. Live PD said that because an investigation had concluded into the officers’ conduct, Live PD deleted the unaired footage.“This is a critical time in our nation’s history and we have made the decision to cease production on Live PD. Going forward, we will determine if there is a clear pathway to tell the stories of both the community and the police officers whose role it is to serve them. And with that, we will be meeting with community and civil rights leaders as well as police departments,” A&E said in a statement to Variety.Live PD frequently was the most-watched program on Friday and Saturday evenings since its 2016 launch. 1621

(CNN) -- A new entry in "The Hunger Games" series is on the way, though fans will likely have to navigate the violent world without Katniss Everdeen.Scholastic announced an untitled prequel novel to the bestselling young adult series, set 64 years before the events of the eponymous first novel. The original trilogy followed heroine Everdeen in the fictional dystopia of Panem as she squared off against other teens in a fight to the death and eventually led an uprising against the oppressive ruling class.Author Suzanne Collins said the new story is set during the "Dark Days," 10 years after the start of the titular games that reduced citizens to savagery and murder to survive."With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, and what we perceive is required for our survival," she said, adding that the nascent days of the rebellion provide ample ground for new characters to "define their views of humanity."Set for a May 2020 release, the newest "Hunger Games" novel will arrive almost 10 years after the last, "Mockingjay," was published. The series spawned a movie franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss with Stanley Tucci, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julianne Moore. The four films earned nearly billion worldwide.Entertainment studio Lionsgate confirmed in a statement it had begun working on a new "Hunger Games" film to accompany the new novel."As the proud home of the 'Hunger Games' movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanne's next book to be published," company chairman Joe Drake said. 1528
