Efforts to build a House of Mexico in Balboa Park's International Cottage area are nearing a critical deadline for fundraising. The group needs to raise 0,000 by the end of the month, or they may have to abandon their plans."We've been on this journey for a long time," says House of Mexico President Sonia Ruiz. The City Council approved plans in 2016 to add 9 "houses" to the cottage area, representing Mexico, the Philippines, Peru, Panama, Korea, India, Palestine, Turkey and Lebanon. They'll share five new buildings. But cost estimates for construction have risen considerably since the approval.Ruiz says it looks like each House will need to pay about a half million dollars for their share of construction."We got the permits back in November," she says. "If we don't start construction within 180 days, we lose the permit."Ruiz adds that applying for a new construction permit would be time consuming and expensive. The House of Mexico was one of the original members of Balboa Park's House of Nations in 1935. But they left the group in 1941. Aside from one year, they didn't re-join until 2004.Since then, the House of Mexico has operated as a non-profit group. They've held numerous events at Balboa Park to showcase Mexican culture. But a physical building would help them expand their mission."We could offer Spanish classes, cooking classes, dance classes," Ruiz says. "We want to have rotating art and culture exhibits in the house."People around Balboa Park were surprised to learn that San Diego's closest international neighbor didn't have its own building among the houses."It's pretty astonishing," says Mark Levy, who walks through the park every day. "We should definitely build that before we put up a wall.""We're so close," says park visitor Pati Stives. "We're such a small world at the end of the day. We are neighbors; they should be here."The House of Mexico is trying to raise the money by the end of May. They have a button on their website for donations, and they're also selling bracelets that say "I Love Mexico" at events. The bracelets are each, a sign of how they want the fundraising to be a community-wide effort."My hope is that we can build this house with small donations by community members," says Ruiz. "I would not push away a large donation, but I think it would be more meaningful if our community came together and everyone donated a dollar, , ." 2424

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top expert on infectious diseases, spoke Wednesday to Harvard's School of Public Health amid the record-breaking spread of COVID-19 and impending announcements on vaccines.Watch the event below:Fauci's comments come amid the deadliest stretch of the pandemic to date.An average of 2,600 Americans are dying of the virus every day to go with an average of more than 200,000 new infections. The surge in the spread of the virus comes as many hospitals are full — a record 104,000 people in the U.S. are battling the virus in a hospital.Despite those grim numbers, Fauci said earlier this week that he expects things to get worse. He told CBS News on Monday that the U.S. still has not seen the expected spread of the virus that was facilitated by travel and indoor gatherings during the Thanksgiving holiday.Fauci's comments also come as the FDA weighs Emergency Use Authorization for a COVID-19 vaccine candidate made by Pfizer. Officials at the agency are expected to meet Thursday to discuss granting authorization, meaning Americans could receive initial doses as soon as next week. The event also comes a day after president-elect Joe Biden formally introduced Fauci as a top medical adviser in his administration. Biden also said he worked with Fauci to establish three goals to fight COVID-19 in his first 100 days in office: Institute mask mandates where possible, give out 100 million doses of vaccine and get as many kids back to in-person learning as possible. 1508

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — El Cajon City Council voted Friday not to make any changes in how the city enforces the county's coronavirus public health orders.Thursday, Mayor Bill Wells called for the special meeting to discuss stopping El Cajon Police from enforcing public health measures around facial coverings and distancing.City Council leaders said the city would continue enforcing the rules as they have on a case-by-case basis, according to the mayor. So while police won't respond to complaints like who is or is not wearing a mask or whether a restaurant has too many people inside, they will focus on more egregious violations, like large parties or businesses being fully opened.RELATED: El Cajon Mayor calls for police to stop enforcing county COVID-19 measuresHowever, after California implemented new guidance on Friday that allows San Diego County to reopen several businesses indoors with modifications starting Monday, Wells said no major action by the city was needed.Thursday, Wells told ABC 10News that he understands that the county and state may continue to hand out fines or criminal charges on businesses despite the stance, but the mental health issues surrounding restrictions are too much."I don't enjoy taking a stand like this, this isn't going to be any fun. But I think my responsibility to the people are more important than my comfort," Wells, a mental health professional, said Thursday. "I want to emphasize I'm not telling people not to wear masks. I'm not telling people not to social distance. And I think people who are elderly with co-morbidities should stay in their homes and not socialize with people."According to data from the county on Friday, El Cajon has reported 1,828 coronavirus cases, or 4.9% of the county's total cases. 1781
