SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the help of witnesses, a driver was arrested late Wednesday night after police said he crashed into several parked cars before taking a U-turn and crashing head-on into another vehicle.According to San Diego police, the incident began at around 11 p.m. on University Avenue in North Park.Cell phone video captured by a witness shows the driver hitting parked cars before trying to leave the scene. He then ends up on the wrong side of the street, where he then crashes into another car, the video shows.The man gets out of the car and tries to run away, but witnesses detained him until police arrived.The driver was taken to a hospital and is suspected of driving under the influence.A woman in the car hit head-on was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries. 798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Wearing masks and social distancing, churchgoers in Mira Mesa gathered outside of the Good Shepherd Parish Wednesday for a special Veterans Day mass.Under San Diego County's latest move into the purple tier, outdoor mass will be the new normal for the church until we move back into a less restrictive tier.“We want to protect the people,” said Father Michael Pham, a pastor at the Catholic church. “Health is important.”He said since reopening, the church has offered services inside at a limited capacity, outside and online. By Saturday, indoor operations will cease due to the county falling back into the purple tier.“We want to comply with the state and health department,” said Pham. “It’s a challenge, but people seem to adapt very well.”While Pham plans to comply, some others are pushing back.Skyline Church posted a lengthy statement to its website, reacting to news of the purple tier. Part of the message said, “Regardless of what tier the governor assigns to San Diego County, our Board, Trustees, and staff all agree that it is necessary to remain open for the overall health and well-being of our communities.”We saw this happen during the last round of closures. Some churches kept their doors open, saying shutting them any longer would lead to severe problems for people, including mental health issues.The county’s public health officer sent cease and desist letters to a few, but some continued to fight back, arguing that religious services are essential.“Fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost, it’s essential,” said the pastors of Awaken Church in a video posted to the church’s website months ago during another closure.Pham said his main goal is to protect his congregants and only reopen once allowed.“We try to do the best we can,” he said. “People are really conscientious about what they need to do, that’s important, that’s the reality that we live in right now.” 1991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Veterinarians with the San Diego Humane Society say too many pets are packing on extra pounds.The shelter sees overweight pets every day and recently received a 26-pound cat named Angelo; his family could no longer care for him. "Even though a lot of people may perceive him to be cute or funny, for us it's alarming to see an animal this size," said Dr. Danielle Clem, Hospital Director for the San Diego Campus.Overweight pets like Angelo are at risk for health complications like diabetes and severe arthritis."I really am a firm believer that good pet care starts with what you put in their food dish - and it's as simple as that," said Dr. Clem.Hospital staff put Angelo on a strict diet and began to encourage exercise. But Dr. Clem warns that if your pet needs to lose weight, it should be done under veterinarian supervision. "Cats losing weight too rapidly can actually be very dangerous."While Angelo has already been adopted, SDHS officials invite people to meet other cats during adopt-a-shelter-cat month. 1045

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With distance learning and the fall semester approaching, college students are struggling with what to do about apartments they are no longer moving into.Nicole Ah Mow lives on the Big Island in Hawaii. Ah Mow was excited to help her daughter move to San Diego, as she prepared to attend San Diego State University as a third- year transfer.“We heard that a lot of these apartments get filled up pretty quickly, so we wanted to get in on it quite early,” Ah Mow said.They found 5025 Apartments near the campus and signed a lease to move in later this month. As the pandemic got worse and universities started weighing between in-person or virtual learning, Ah Mow asked the complex if there was any flexibility.“Basically [they] just said at this time, there's no other option,” Ah Mow said.“Everyone is very stressed out,” said Erin Rounds, managing attorney with the Tenants Legal Center.She said they have been flooded with calls since the pandemic began.“Tenants do still have rights and they have enhanced rights right now,” Rounds said. “Landlords need to be understanding and sympathetic and follow the law.”She said its critical families go over their contract. Rounds said there are limited circumstances where you can break a lease. “The sooner you let them know, the better that situation's going to be,” Rounds said.She advised anyone looking to break a lease to contact an attorney.In Ah Mow’s situation, emails from the assistant community manager in early July said they are "unable to terminate [her] lease."In late July, the apartment complex managers gave her three options: move in and pay the rent, allow the complex to find someone to take over her daughter’s spot and pay the fees, or Ah Mow needed to find someone herself and pay a 0 reassignment fee.“I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place,” she said.Not knowing the area, she opted for 5025 Apartments to find someone. However, she told Team 10 she had to pay close to ,000 upfront including more than ,500 in rent difference.She understood some of the fees, but for her “to pay the difference, I think that’s really harsh on their side.”Team 10 called and sent several emails to 5025 Apartment managers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While Michelin decided to postpone its annual award of stars to California restaurants this year due to the pandemic and wildfires, undercover eaters did find several "discoveries" across the state.The new-found culinary delights were announced as part of Michelin Guide's "Family Meal" livestream to celebrate the resilience of restaurants and raise money for the California Association of Food Banks.In San Diego, five restaurants pleasantly surprised guide inspectors were Tuetano Taqueria in San Ysidro, Morning Glory in Little Italy, Dija Mara in Oceanside, Soichi Sushi in University Heights, and Sushi Tadokoro in Old Town.Inspectors said Tuetano Taqueria Chef Priscilla Curiel’s guisados "are every inch the equal of Baja’s—down to the fair prices and hefty portions (and without the long traffic lines on your way home)." The guide also hailed the restaurant's beef birria that is topped with a bone filled with buttery marrow on top of the taco.Morning Glory's soufflé pancakes are "worth waking up for," according to the guide, and dishes like fried rice with pork belly and eggs and potatoes au gratin are "a great riff on tradition."Indonesian stop Dija Mara serves up creative cocktails and delicious nasi goreng (fried rice with shrimp, pork belly, chicken, and the yolk of a sunny egg) and charred eggplant with smoked tomato sambal and crispy fried shallots, inspectors said.Soichi impressed with its sushi offerings, including its pike mackerel, kampachi, and sea bass dishes. Michelin says Soichi's shirumono fish soup is also a must before trying out the restaurant's green tea ice cream.Inspectors say Sushi Tadokoro's omakase is a must-try, especially the sushi joint's oysters and scallops.
