SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Following a surge in 911 calls from COVID-19 patients, the County of San Diego is now allowing hospitals to divert ambulances if their emergency rooms are already too full. The County reports that the new protocol was tested last weekend and proved to be successful. The County reports that this new type of diversion goes above and beyond the routine ambulance diversion of only a subset of patients that hospitals use on a regular basis.Hospitals across San Diego that are saturated are now allowed to request total ambulance diversion, meaning ambulances have to stop bringing in more patients. A letter posted this Tuesday from the County's Director of Emergency Medical Services details how the new protocol will help area hospitals recover from the rapid influx of patients.According to the County, “Hospitals on County Ambulance Diversion only accept patients who are so critical that they cannot survive transport to another facility (e.g., cardiac arrest, breathing problems that cannot be managed in the ambulance); thus, nearly all basic and advanced life support (BLS and ALS) ambulances must bypass a hospital on County Ambulance Diversion.”The County reports that a hospital can only implement the diversion in 4-hour blocks which must be approved or initiated by the County.Rob Lawrence with the California Ambulance Association explained Wednesday that this type of diversion allows for decompression. “It allows [hospitals] to get a bit of time to process those patients that have already come into their emergency departments. It also means that ambulances aren't sitting in the parking areas for up to four hours with a patient on board.”He added that it also aids the ambulance services because they can then move patients to hospitals where the wait times are lower. “What that means is [that] they can then return to service quicker which is of course good for the next patient or person that's going to call 911,” he told ABC10 News.According to the County, the new diversion protocol has been implemented by local emergency departments several times over the past few days. 2123

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homes burned overnight Sunday as the Valley Fire raged through the East County, burning thousands of acres and prompting a state of emergency declaration.Video from the scene showed structures and vehicles scorched by the flames. So far, 11 structures have been destroyed by the fire.As of Sunday at 8:47 p.m., the fire has so far scorched 9,850 acres and is 1% contained, Cleveland National Forest says.Evacuation orders have been issued for Barrett Lake Dam, while evacuation warnings have been issued for Lake Marina, Dulzura, Dog Patch, Potrero, Campo, Honey Springs, Barrett Junction, Dearhorn Valley, Corte Madera, Pine Valley, and the area from Lyons/Japatul Valley Rd. to the 8 Freeway.Overnight into Monday, fire crews say the fire is expected to remain active because of the lack of overnight moisture.Structures are being threatened in the Carveacre and Lawson Valley, Wood Valley, Lyons Valley, and Deer Horn Valley. The agency added that power lines that supply a large portion of San Diego County are also threatened.SDG&E says they are working with CalFire to solve any outages due to the fire, but need to wait for approval for their crews to be allowed into the area and to re-energize power lines. The company said there were more than 3,300 customers without power due to the fire.An evacuation center has been set up at Steele Canyon High School at 2440 Campo Road and Joan MacQueen Middle School at 2001 Tavern Road.Joan MacQueen Middle School was briefly closed Sunday as an evacuation center, but has since been reopened.INTERACTIVE MAP: Valley Fire erupts in Japatul Valley areaThe County Animal Services South Shelter is also welcoming evacuated animals. Anyone who needs help evacuating animals is asked to call 619-299-7012. “Remember to evacuate early, take your pets with you, bring food & water,” the organization said.Sunday, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for San Diego County, in addition to several other counties where wildfires were burning. The declaration will free up federal funds to be used in response to the fires.RELATED STORIESPhotos: Valley Fire erupts in East CountySocial media reaction to Valley FireCheck today's weather forecast in your areaSan Diego County opens cool zones amid heat waveThe fire erupted near Sprint Trail and Japatul Road southeast of Alpine just before 3 p.m. on Saturday. According to the US Forest Service, 374 firefighters are battling the flames on the ground. The Valley Fire also caused air quality to plummet. The County Air Pollution Control District said Sunday that air quality in areas affected by smoke may reach unhealthy levels, compelling the agency to issue a smoke advisory.Additionally, the air quality will be negatively affected by Ozone levels that are expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups due to the extreme heat, the agency said.“In areas of heavy smoke, assume that air quality levels are unhealthy for sensitive groups to unhealthy for all individuals. In areas with minor smoke impacts, assume that air quality levels range from moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups,” the organization said. The district advised anyone who smells smoke to limit outdoor activity. 3384

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Father of three boys, Ben Walrath, was excited when he heard baseball practice was starting up again."There's only so much Fortnite they can play," Walrath said, his son Austin, 10, chiming in, "before I get bored." "Before we have to do something different," Walrath continued. He had a talk with his boys about how practice is going to be different to protect them from coronavirus. When quizzed, his sons answered correctly, "no dugout during practice," Austin said. "Stay six feet away." Walrath reminded them, "we're not going to be doing high fives and stuff like that... and no games right away."While Austin wasn't enthused about the new protocol, he was excited to see his friends for the first time in months at practice Monday.President of Sweetwater Valley Little League Arturo Maldonado said they are rolling out practice in three phases. Monday was the beginning of phase one with kids ages 10-15. This weekend phase two will start for kids ages 7-10 and as soon as June 26 the youngest ball players ages 4-7 will get to come back to practice."Everybody's learning how things are going to be done out in the field and that's why we're doing it in three different phases so that we can make adjustments," Maldonado said.He said managers and coaches will be wearing masks, but the kids don't have to. He said the kids will be encouraged to socially distance. There won't be any hugging, high-fives, or sunflower seeds and hand sanitizer is always close by. The dugout will be expanded to the stands, Maldonado said, to accommodate for social distancing.Parents aren't allowed at practice yet and sick players are encouraged to stay home.Monday Walrath said the boys played wiffleball, just as they would any other day."We're not going to change the game of baseball. We're changing how we're watching the game of baseball," Maldonado said.Walrath said safety is a priority for every family. "There's always health concerns in sports, whether that's normal injury concerns. Coronavirus adds a new twist to health concerns and just like with anything else I think this is a personal risk decision for each and every one of our families," Walrath said.Sweetwater Valley Little League has a history of big wins, making it to the Little League World Series in 2015, and Regionals in 2019.Families hope to get their kids some social interaction after months of staying at home and keep them safe. 2426

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the fourth consecutive year, the USS Champion has won a contest held between ships at Naval Base San Diego over which crew could put together the best decorations."It's just a great opportunity for the crew to really come together, enjoy some time not focusing on the day to day, but to really express themselves," said the ship's commanding officer, Lt. Commander Matthew Yokeley. The Champion, an Avenger-Class Minesweeper, was covered in decorations. Lights, bows, and bells lined the railings and were struck all the way to the top of the mast. Giant inflatables were mounted on the deck, along with a Christmas tree. The lights were synchronized to flash with a holiday music show. This is a big deal for us. Christmas lights are pretty competitive," said Petty Officer Pierce Cloninger. "We like to win. They don't call us Champion for nothing." 880

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Five baby foxes were rescued from a South Bay construction site after a worker spotted them below a pile of cement rocks set for destruction.A construction worker at an Otay Mesa work site alerted his manager to the a Grey fox and her five babies this week, before crews were set to break down the pile with a jackhammer, according to San Diego Humane Society.Humane officers responded and removed the large blocks over the den with the help of construction workers. The days-old babies — two males and three females — made it out safely, but their mother fled over the commotion.Officers tried to lure the mom with fox pup sounds and her babies to no avail. Monday morning, SDHS says they were able to trap the mother. The babies and mom were brought to SDHS's Project Wildlife center for care, before being transported to Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona. 894
