SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Any other year, Sonia Highbaugh and her family would be spending Christmas gathered at her sister’s house, but in true 2020 fashion, things look a little different this holiday.“I was sad this year not being able to spend the holidays with my extended family and everyone, but we make those hard decisions for the betterment of everybody,” said Highbaugh. “We actually stayed home, it’s just my immediate family, my boyfriend, and our two boys. We made videos of them opening their gifts so we can share with family so we can feel like we were together.”Highbaugh works for the Chicano Federation and says through training with the San Diego Latino Health Coalition; she received pointers on how she should be spending the holiday this year.“With the pandemic, we wanted to be safe. I’m also expecting, so it’s very important for me to stay safe,” she said.Registered Nurse Francisco Garcia can relate.“It’s just us three,” said Garcia.While breaking traditions can be challenging, Garcia, his wife, and daughter also decided to spend Christmas at home together.“Being a Latino, my family chooses to get together every year for Christmas and have food and presents. Just having everyone together is what we take pride in, and so it’s very different that we’re not around each other this year,” he said.Working as a registered nurse, Garcia knows all too well the potential consequences of large gatherings during the pandemic, especially after the surge in COVID-19 cases after Thanksgiving celebrations.“Seeing an influx of patients and the number of patients we’re seeing with COVID as the year went on was a big challenge,” he said.Health officials across the nation, including here in San Diego County, have urged people to stay home, avoid traveling and large gatherings, despite that some continue to ignore the guidance.According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 846,520 people in the United States were screened at TSA checkpoints on Christmas Eve alone, and millions more were screened since last Friday.Still, many families are playing safe and having a great time doing so.“It has been fantastic; I think the biggest challenge we’ve had is not burning the Christmas dinner,” said Garcia.“We have to trust our community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Consumer spending in San Diego was down nearly .3 billion between February and April 2020, showing just how badly the COVID-19 pandemic crippled the local economy.Since stay-at-home orders began in March, SANDAG says taxable sales in the region dropped from an average of .3 billion to billion in April.The largest losses in the region were seen at apparel stores (an 83% decrease in sales) and restaurants (down 67%).On the other side, big-box retailers like Costco, Target, and Walmart have fared well, SANDAG says. Grocery stores and pharmacy, though, were actually down 10% in taxable sales. Home improvement sales were also up, likely due to stimulus checks, SANDAG adds."It is interesting to learn that grocery stores and pharmacy sales are actually down by 10%, while home improvement sales have spiked," said SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major. "We can assume that during the pandemic, people had more time to work on outdoor landscaping, gardens, and other home beautification projects. Plant seed companies also saw increases-- nearly four times their average sales."Consumer spending among online retailers like Amazon increased 35% as well.SANDAG's report estimates that consumer spending will continue to be down through August, though slightly less each month. 1306

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Campaign committees supporting both Todd Gloria and Barbary Bry have raised more than million so far this election season, pouring money into TV ads and mail fliers.City law limits how much individuals and businesses can contribute directly to a campaign. But rules for campaign committees are more lenient, letting people, corporations, Political Action Committees, and other groups donate tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars."For better or for worse, the way the electoral system is designed, you need money to run a campaign," says San Diego State University Political Science Lecturer Stephen Goggin."It's important to note where this money is coming from," Goggin says. "Not only is it just about money in terms of voting, but it gives you a clue about who's doing the endorsing and who's backed by a particular interest group."In the 2020 race for San Diego mayor, five campaign committees have formed to support Assemblyman Todd Gloria. Combined, they have raised .7 million.Councilwoman Barbara Bry, meanwhile, has just one campaign committee raising money to support her. It has brought in around 3,000.Bry says that shows she will not be indebted to special interest groups if she's elected."The special interests in this town are afraid of an independent woman who has made it clear that she's going to demand accountability and transparency at City Hall," Bry told ABC 10News."I think this kind of spending is very harmful to our democratic system. And in this election, you know voters should understand exactly the enormous amount of money that special interests are putting into Todd Gloria's campaign," she says.An ABC 10News In-Depth look into the funding shows that Campaign Committees supporting Gloria have gotten the most money from labor groups. The Municipal Employees Association is the largest donor, giving 0,000 to a Committee called "Neighbors for Housing Solutions Supporting Todd Gloria for San Diego Mayor 2020." Other labor groups have given more than 0,000 altogether.Gloria has also received around 0,000 from various short-term vacation rental companies like Airbnb, Seabreeze Vacation Rentals, and Share San Diego. The San Diego Chamber of Commerce also donated more than 0,000 to committees supporting Gloria.He told ABC 10News the large, diverse group of people and entities donating to committees on his behalf shows that he can build coalitions to lead. Gloria added his track record of more than a decade in public office shows large donors won't control him."I've always had an open door and a willingness to talk to anybody and to try and understand what they're dealing with and what an appropriate solution would be," Gloria says. "Some of the folks supporting my mayoral campaign have opposed me in the past, recognizing that I don't always vote with them, and we're not always in agreement. From where I sit, that's not a bad thing."The campaign committee supporting Bry got the largest donation from the Infrastructure PAC of the Associates General Contractors. They gave ,000. ACE Parking and its owner, Scott Jones, gave ,000. The rest comes primarily from individual donors.Goggin says looking at lists of donors can help voters decide who to support. By law, every donation is public record and available online. But it takes work to sift through the information."In local races, people have to figure out who these people are on their own," he says.However, because the campaign committees have to remain independent from the candidates, the people they support have no influence on what kind of messages they put out in ads. That can lead to controversy if a campaign committee runs negative ads or misconstrues the truth."Many candidates have lost the ability to control the message of their campaigns," Goggin says. WalletHub ranked states based on feedback from psychology, social work and child studies experts at several universities, and statistics from each region. States were given grades in categories including the cost of housing, child care, and unemployment. California ranked 19th overall.
