CARSLBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- If there's anyone in Carlsbad that knows food, it Cheri Poulos. Poulos is the founder of Carlsbad Food Tours, a tour that gives locals and tourists a taste of the city. Poulos has a blog where she writes about the best places to eat in the city. The food lover offers two different types of tours, one called the Taste of Carlsbad and one called the Indulgence Food tour. Private tours are also available. 10News went along with Poulos for one of the food tours. The first stop was at Gregorio's Italian Kitchen, known for giving back to the community. At one point, the restaurant donated all of their proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club. From Gregorio's the tour continued to Caldo Pomodoro, home to what some call the best garlic bread in the county. Portraits of Caldo Pomodoro's owners hang over the entrance of the restaurant. The restaurant's founders are a borther and sister duo, Fran and Gina. Fran was a Hollywood hairdresser and pictures of his clients adorn the walls of the restaurant. Fran has since passed away, his sister Gina now runs the restuarant. The tour also includes some stops at several sweet spots, including a gourmet donut shop called, The Goods. The Goods is the sister restaurant of Cafe Topes, a staple in town known for their cinnamon rolls. Both locations are run by the Barille family. The tour then continues to Gelato Love, a family-run gelato shop. The shop is owned by Paola Richard and her cousin, Christina. Gelato Love is the only shop in the entire country that doesn't use any added sugar, only sugar from the fruit itself. The tour also stops at other local favorites like Vigilucci's Gourmet Market, Witch Creek Winery and Humble Olive Oils. The tour operates daily, seven days a week. (KGTV) — Twenty-eight local Marine and Navy veterans of World War II were honored during a sunset ceremony Saturday.Camp Pendleton honored the veterans with a 21-gun salute, bell tolling, and wreath laying ceremony as part of the 75th commemoration of the Battle of Iwo Jima.This annual event is one of the largest Iwo Jima reunions in the U.S. as the number of surviving World War II veterans begins to dwindle."It's just amazingly remarkable marines who've truly established the legacy of the marine corps on whose shoulders we stand as we continue to protect the freedoms of the nation," Lt. Gen. Joseph Osterman, commanding general of the First Marine Expeditionary Force, said.Tens of thousands of U.S. troops fought Japanese soldiers during the island invasion from Feb. 19, 1945 to March 26, 1945. CARLSBAD (CNS) - A 47-year-old man suffered severe injuries when he lost control of his speeding car and struck a tree on a Carlsbad street, police said Tuesday.Dispatchers received a report of a solo vehicle crash shortly before 6:10 p.m. Monday in the 7100 block of Corintia Street, off Alga Road, Carlsbad police Lt. Christie Calderwood said.Officers responded and found the man -- a Carlsbad resident -- unconscious inside a Mercedes-Benz CLS 55 sedan, Calderwood said.A preliminary investigation found that the victim was speeding when he struck a curb, lost control of the sedan and crashed into the tree, the lieutenant said.Paramedics took the injured motorist to the hospital for treatment of "severe injuries," Calderwood said. An update on the man's condition was not immediately available and it was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.Anyone with information about the crash was asked to contact Cpl. (KGTV) - Food insecurity is a problem in San Diego year-round, and that problem has become worse with the pandemic.Campo, in San Diego's East County, is an area that struggles with access to food year-round because of its far distance. Many people choose to live in the area because of the rural setting, but also because of the lower cost of living.“We’re really below the poverty level out here. We’re lower in income out here and so grocery stores aren’t readily available right around the corner,” said Julie Atherton, a site coordinator for a food distribution that happens twice a month.Atherton said the closest major store is at least a half hour drive, so the pop-up food banks with food supplied by Feeding San Diego are crucial throughout the year, but the need has grown during the pandemic.“We serve a lot of seniors, a lot of families that have been affected by the COVID,” said Atherton.She said the older people who live in Campo are the ones who need to be more careful during the pandemic, so many of them are trying to avoid stores. This caution, combined with an already existing difficulty with getting to the store, has created a heightened problem surrounding food insecurity. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The pandemic ignited a global fight against a fast-moving and deadly virus. “In the beginning, a lot of manufacturers shifted gears and started doing more COVID manufacturing," said Dr. Melissa Miller, a clinical lab director.Manufacturers began ramping up testing production and diverting supplies to combat the virus. But in the months ahead, laboratories started facing another threat due to a strained supply chain. Not only were labs facing shortages of supplies needed for COVID-19, but several other common illnesses. “Probably the biggest one was for sexually transmitted diseases, chlamydia, gonorrhea being the most common ones we diagnose in the labs," said Dr. Miller. The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) partnered with the Association of Supply Chain Management to track shortages across the country. ASM leaders say the data collection tool provides a near real-time visualization into the capacity, utilization, and resources necessary to meet consumer and patient demand for testing.“It was a bit of a surprise of how overwhelming it was throughout the country and that there weren’t just hot spots; it really indicated that this was a major national issue," said Dr. Miller. “The first week of the survey, almost 90% of the laboratories that responded reported a shortage of tests for STI’s.”Dr. Miller has a leadership role within ASM and has also been experiencing shortages in the lab firsthand."It’s a guessing game. Many times we don’t know when the next shipment is coming for some of the items we’re short on," said Dr. Miller. Since September, 134 CLIA-certified labs have responded to the survey, which is updated every week. Dr. Miller says the figure for STI testing supplies has improved but is still too high around 50%. And she says 47% of labs have a shortage of non-COVID-19 testing supplies to detect routine bacteria, including the bacteria that cause strep throat, pneumonia, bronchitis, and urinary tract infections."Since June, I have been worried about this exact moment," said Dr. Miller. “You have the COVID surge, the upcoming holidays, and the winter season, and you have respiratory season."The survey also showed 74% of labs have a shortage of commercial testing kits for COVID-19.She says the hope is to include more labs in the weekly survey to get a clearer picture of the supply chain issues.“Data is power; we need the data that this is a problem. And getting some federal action on this, I think, is critical," said Dr. Miller. And she says the longer labs wait for critical supplies, the more Americans in need of critical testing could be turned away. 2641
