SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — South Salt Lake Police officers pitched in to replace a woman's American flag after they say she used it to fight off a home intruder on Monday.According to the department, 42-year-old Justin Scott Smith attempted to break into the woman's home shortly before 9 a.m.Police say when the suspect entered the front yard through the gate and assaulted multiple people, the woman grabbed the flag pole with the flag attached to defend herself and her family members. They say she hit the suspect multiple times, breaking the pole in the process, and the victims retreated into the home.Smith kicked the door in and continued to assault everyone inside, police say, before officers arrived and took him into custody. He was arrested on suspicion of assault, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, and criminal mischief. After the incident, police say the woman was worried about desecrating the flag because the pole had broken and the flag had hit the ground, so officers took up a collection to replace it. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former Wells Fargo personal banker accused of involvement in a Tijuana-based international money laundering organization that operated primarily in San Diego made his initial appearance in U.S. District Court today after his arrest Wednesday. The apprehension of 30-year-old Luis Fernando Figueroa marks the latest in a string of indictments and arrests tied to the money laundering organization, federal authorities said.Figueroa, of Tijuana, is charged with conspiracy to launder monetary instruments and operation of an unlicensed money transmitting business.Between January and March of this year, seven leaders of the organization were charged and arrested in San Diego. To date, five of the charged leaders have pleaded guilty.According to the indictment and other public records, the organization laundered approximately .6 million in narcotics proceeds on behalf of Mexican-based drug trafficking organizations, including the Sinaloa Cartel, between 2014 and 2016.Prosecutors said the money laundering organization recruited individuals to serve as "funnel account holders" and open personal bank accounts at Wells Fargo Bank and other banking institutions.Other members of the money laundering organization, known as "couriers," traveled to San Diego, Los Angeles, the East Coast and other U.S. cities, where they picked up and transported amounts of bulk cash ranging from thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars in drug proceeds.Money was deposited in funnel bank accounts controlled by the money laundering organization and maintained at Wells Fargo and other financial institutions. Subsequently, the funds were transferred to a series of Mexico-based shell companies operated by the money laundering organization. Once in Mexico, the funds were transferred to members of the Sinaloa Cartel. 1840

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego State University student accused of setting a string of fires around the campus over the course of three days was charged with a dozen felony counts Wednesday, including burglary, arson and vandalism. Madelyn Delarosa, 19, was taken into custody Saturday morning, following four fires she's suspected of setting to apartments and vehicles across campus between March 13-16. No injuries were reported in connection with the fires, all of which occurred a few blocks south of Viejas Arena. However, Deputy District Attorney Rikole Santin noted that one of the fires was ignited in an occupied apartment, inside which a person was sleeping. Santin said the heat from the flames caused a window to shatter and ``rain glass and fire'' upon the victim, who was asleep just below the window. A suspected motive for the spree was unknown, as was the reason Delarosa was no longer a student at the campus. RELATED: Former SDSU student arrested in connection with a string of fires on campusDelarosa, who pleaded not guilty, faces 13 years in state prison if convicted as charged. The prosecutor said the crime spree began last Wednesday with Delarosa allegedly vandalizing a vehicle parked within an apartment complex garage, causing ``well over ,000 in damage.'' At 11 a.m. Thursday, an officer on patrol spotted and quickly extinguished a fire in a parked car in the 5500 block of Hardy Avenue, according to campus police. Santin said surveillance footage captured the defendant entering a parking garage, where a Toyota Prius was set aflame, then an hour later, she allegedly ignited the exterior door of an unoccupied apartment in the 5600 block of Hardy Avenue, both times by using an unspecified accelerant. A passerby put out the apartment fire before officers arrived, police said. Around 8:30 a.m. Friday, police received word of the apartment blaze near the 5500 block of Montezuma Road, where the sleeping resident was able to escape without injury, according to Santin. That fire went out on its own, police said. Delarosa is also accused with setting a Mercedes-Benz on fire shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday in a parking garage in the 5500 block of Hardy Avenue. Delarosa has no prior criminal history, but had ``numerous prior contacts with law enforcement,'' according to Santin, the nature of which was not disclosed. The defendant is being held in lieu of 0,000 bail and is due back in court March 29 for a readiness conference. 2483
