Mary Kay Letourneau, a former teacher who was sentenced for an illicit relationship with a then sixth-grade student, has died at the age of 58, her attorney told NBC News. Her lawyer David Gehrke told news outlets Letourneau died Tuesday of cancer.Letourneau was charged with rape of a child after Letourneau became pregnant following a sexual relationship with student Vili Fualaau. The relationship began in 1996 when Letourneau was 34 and Fualaau was 12 or 13.When Fualaau was 18, he petitioned the court to lift a no-contact order between Letourneau and Fualaau. Fualaau would go on to marry Letourneau in 2005.They have two daughters together. Fualaau filed for a legal separation from Letourneau in 2017. 717

MATTHEWS, N.C. (AP) — A mixup with the first absentee ballots sent in North Carolina caused some voters to receive two identical ballots for the November general election, according to election officials. Some ballots intended for voters in Matthews were mislabeled with the wrong names and were shredded before they could be sent this week, Mecklenburg County election officials told news outlets. When officials printed new mailing labels to correct the mistake, some voters ended up getting two duplicate ballots.Fewer than 500 voters were affected, Election Director Michael Dickerson said. The official added that it was unlikely that voters could have cast two ballots, a felony, because each mailing label includes an individual code making it impossible to vote twice.About 813,000 absentee ballots have been requested in North Carolina as of Monday as millions of Americans prepare to vote by mail to avoid polling places during the coronavirus pandemic.President Donald Trump, who has made unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud through mail-in voting, tweeted about the incident in North Carolina Thursday. 1121

Mayor Megan Barry has surrendered the passcode for her personal phone to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, her attorney says in a statement released Friday morning."This morning I spoke with TBI Director Mark Gwyn to provide the TBI with the passcode for Mayor Barry's personal cell phone," Jerry Martin said in the statement."This is her personal phone, not her Metro issued phone. I have confidence that Director Gwyn will ensure that the TBI limits its search of her personal phone to only items that are relevant to its investigation."Martin added that "reports that the Mayor has been uncooperative during this process are untrue."He said that the mayor's legal team has "provided the TBI with thousands of pages of documents at its request."Mayor's Lawyer?Asks DA To Recuse Himself From CaseSpecial Section:City Hall ScandalThe former U.S. attorney said that Barry's legal team was just trying to clarify how non-relevant matters would be handled before the public release of a damning search warrant affidavit that implies investigators may have nude pictures of the mayor."We were in the process of preparing to turn over her phone when the TBI, presumably at the director of the District Attorney, sought a search warrant," Martin added."This tactic was surprising since the evening before the search warrant was issued, I communicated our willingness to turn over the phone."However, by seeking the phone via a search warrant the authorities were ultimately afforded the opportunity for the unorthodox release of the underlying affidavit."While it may be common for search warrants themselves to be made public, the underlying affidavits are typically not returned and made public at this stage of the investigation."Read the full statement below: 1775

Microsoft said Sunday that it is "prepared to continue discussions to explore a purchase of TikTok in the United States."The announcement comes days after President Donald Trump said he was planning on banning the app, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance.Trump administration officials are concerned about the app's terms of service, citing the privacy concerns of U.S. citizens with the Chinese government."Microsoft will move quickly to pursue discussions with TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, in a matter of weeks, and in any event completing these discussions no later than September 15, 2020," Microsoft's statement read, in part. "During this process, Microsoft looks forward to continuing dialogue with the United States Government, including with the President.""The discussions with ByteDance will build upon a notification made by Microsoft and ByteDance to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). The two companies have provided notice of their intent to explore a preliminary proposal that would involve a purchase of the TikTok service in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand and would result in Microsoft owning and operating TikTok in these markets. Microsoft may invite other American investors to participate on a minority basis in this purchase."Read Microsoft's statement in full here.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo later said President Donald Trump plans to take action on what he sees as a broad array of national security risks presented by software connected to the Chinese Communist Party.Trump has said he would soon ban TikTok in the United States. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says a federal committee is reviewing whether that’s possible, and its members agree that TikTok cannot remain in the U.S. in its current form. 1814

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- One former police officer has been charged in the Breonna Taylor case, but that doesn't mean it's the end of investigations.People across the country have been following the case of Taylor's death, and many wanted to see the officers involved face criminal charges. Demonstrations were held Wednesday night in Louisville and other cities after it was announced former Louisville Metro Police Department Detective Brett Hankison's charges of wanton endangerment are not directly related to Taylor's death. Additionally, two officers who fired shots the night Taylor was killed will not face criminal charges. They do still face another investigation, though. The Courier-Journal reports that the Louisville police department is conducting a Professional Standards Unit investigation to determine whether they and four other officers violated police policy or rules during the raid. The results of this internal review could lead to disciplinary action. Also, the FBI is conducting an investigation that could result in civil rights violations.Governor Andy Beshear is calling for the details of the state's investigation to be posted online by Attorney General Daniel Cameron."I trust Kentuckians. They deserve to see the facts for themselves, and I believe that the ability to process those facts helps everybody," said Beshear.Taylor's case is one of many that became a focus in the conversation about police reform. Attorney General Cameron says he'll form a task force to look at Kentucky's search warrants' policies. In Lexington, protesters have called to ban no-knock warrants, just like in Louisville. This story was originally published by Alex Valverde at WLEX. 1694
