BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) issued a circular on Friday banning the use of Nimesulide, an anti-inflammatory drug, for children under the age of 12, considering potential side-effects such as liver and kidney damage.Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that first became available in Italy in 1985. It is now used in more than 50 countries and regions.The drug entered Chinese markets in 1997.According to the SFDA, while common adverse reactions to the drug include vomiting and stomache, domestic and overseas statistics indicate that more severe issues are related to the drug, such as blood coagulation disorders, decreased white blood cells and damage to liver and kidney.Previously, the SFDA only prevented the use of the drug among children one year old or younger.Also on Friday, the SFDA ordered the suspension of the production, sales and use of Duxil (almitrine and raubasine compound) due to its "unobvious" efficacy.According to the SFDA, clinical research found "little" evidence proving the drug effectively improves the cognitive ability for patients suffering vascular cognitive impairment.The drug was supposed to treat symptoms related to cognition and sensory nerve damage.The moves came after a two-month nationwide campaign was launched earlier this month to probe the quality of essential drugs and ensure drug safety.Official figures show that China's National Center for Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring received 692,904 reports of adverse reactions in 2010, up 8.4 percent compared with those in 2009.Among the total, 109,991 cases involved new or severe adverse reactions, a year-on-year increase of 16.2 percent.

KUNMING, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Local authorities said all earthquake victims had found shelter after nearly 9,000 tents were set up in the earthquake-hit Yingjiang County in southwest China.Altogether 53,000 people are being housed in large-sized tents erected in county plazas and village squares, said Jiang Zhaogang, spokesman with the rescue headquarters.Others moved in with friends, relatives, or makeshift houses for temporary accommodation, said Jiang.A 5.8-magnitude quake struck Yingjiang County in southwest China's Yunnan Province Thursday, leaving 25 dead and 314 injured. The tremor also toppled the homes of 1,039 families and left 4,994 others seriously damaged.As of Sunday, the central and local governments in Yunnan have disbursed 10,000 tents, 15,000 quilts and 15,000 coats for the homeless victims in the quake-hit region.White coated medical personnel patrolled and disinfected the tents every day, and no sign of epidemics have been detected.In one tent area, a local medical team was brewing traditional herbal juice for disease prevention, while residents lined up before the steaming wok with bowls, bottles, and even wash basins at hand."I invented this herbal brew especially for the disaster victims, which can help prevent flu and alleviate rheumatic pains," said Chen Benshan, an experienced practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine.Though the rebuilding of the county has not been put on schedule, less damaged schools are expected to resume classes on Monday."We want to start counseling classes as soon as possible to help the children recover from the terror of the earthquake," said Jin Xiasi, a member of the local rescue team.

BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Google Inc. is working with MasterCard Inc. and Citigroup Inc to develop a technology that could make mobile payments, according to media reports Monday.The new technology named "Nexus S Android" is embedded in Android mobile devices and allows customers to make purchases by waving their smartphones in front of a small reader at the checkout counter.Credit-card reader producer VeriFone Systems Inc, also involved in the new payment service, is developing contact-less devices that could allow people to pay with a wave or tap of credit card or a tap of smartphone.To use the service, holders of Citigroup-issued debit and credit cards must activate a mobile-payment application developed for one current model of Android phones. More models will be coming as the technology advances.Besides mobile payment, consumers would also be able to get targeted ads or discount offers, manage credit-card accounts and track spending through an application on their smartphones.Due to the deliberate design of the technology, customers have no need to worry about the security of their payment information. Nick Holland, a mobile-transactions analyst at Yankee Group, said the new technology is more sophisticated than credit cards with a magnetic stripe.With the coming service, Google is aiming to boost its advertising business by offering retailers more data about their customers and help them target ads and discount offers to mobile-device users near their stores.An insider told that Google was not expected to get a cut of the transaction fees.The service is expected to be released this year. WASHINGTON, May 4 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Wednesday that its Gravity Probe B (GP-B) mission has confirmed two key predictions derived from Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which the spacecraft was designed to test.The experiment, launched in 2004, used four ultra-precise gyroscopes to measure the hypothesized geodetic effect, the warping of space and time around a gravitational body, and frame- dragging, the amount a spinning object pulls space and time with it as it rotates.GP-B determined both effects with unprecedented precision by pointing at a single star, IM Pegasi, while in a polar orbit around Earth. If gravity did not affect space and time, GP-B's gyroscopes would point in the same direction forever while in orbit. But in confirmation of Einstein's theories, the gyroscopes experienced measurable, minute changes in the direction of their spin, while Earth's gravity pulled at them.The findings are available online in the journal Physical Review Letters."Imagine the Earth as if it were immersed in honey. As the planet rotates, the honey around it would swirl, and it's the same with space and time," said Francis Everitt, GP-B principal investigator at Stanford University. "GP-B confirmed two of the most profound predictions of Einstein's universe, having far- reaching implications across astrophysics research."GP-B is one of the longest running projects in NASA history, with agency involvement starting in the fall of 1963 with initial funding to develop a relativity gyroscope experiment. Subsequent decades of development led to groundbreaking technologies to control environmental disturbances on spacecraft, such as aerodynamic drag, magnetic fields and thermal variations. The mission's star tracker and gyroscopes were the most precise ever designed and produced.GP-B completed its data collection operations and was decommissioned in December 2010."The mission results will have a long-term impact on the work of theoretical physicists," said Bill Danchi, senior astrophysicist and program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Every future challenge to Einstein's theories of general relativity will have to seek more precise measurements than the remarkable work GP-B accomplished."
