SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A rare thunderstorm Friday night is expected to quickly give way to conditions ripe for wildfire by late Sunday, forecasters said.A storm system arrived Friday evening and unleashed heavy rain and lighting on the San Diego area, with precipitation amounting to a few tenths of an inch in most places.The National Weather Service predicted scattered showers to persist through Saturday night. By Sunday night, Santa Ana winds of 25-35 mph -- with isolated gusts up to 70 mph possible in some areas -- were expected to move in.Humidity was expected to drop rapidly to 5-10 percent on Monday as well, prompting the NWS to issue a fire weather watch for San Diego County, as well as Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, from 3 a.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday.The watch was set to be in effect for mountains, foothills and valleys, but the conditions could cause fire to spark anywhere.Moisture from the thunderstorm will help to alleviate the fire threat, but fuels will dry quickly on Monday, NWS forecasters said.Winds were predicted to gradually decrease Tuesday night and Wednesday, and conditions will be warm and sunny the remainder of the week, forecasters said. 1199
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Barrels holding an unknown substance were found on a Rancho Pe?asquitos sidewalk today, and San Diego Fire-Rescue investigators were looking into it.The unidentified drums were found unattended around 9:30 a.m. on Kika Court near Mercy Road.Hazmat crews took samples from the drums but were unable to determine what substance was inside, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Jose Ysea said.Investigators left the scene, and a contractor was called in to remove and dispose of the material. 510
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials announced Wednesday they received reports of the county's third person to die of flu-related causes since the 2019-20 flu season began.The 80-year-old north county man died Nov. 1, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. He had received this season's flu vaccine prior to his death and had additional medical conditions. Health officials received reports of this flu season's first death in August. The county also confirmed 58 flu cases last week, nearly double the 30 confirmed cases from the previous week. County health officials have already confirmed 420 flu cases this season, which corresponds with the county's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. At this time last flu season, officials had confirmed only 157 cases. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Wednesday released the name of a 19-year-old man killed last week in a shooting at Linda Vista Recreation Center.Nam Nguyen of San Diego was shot by an unidentified assailant about 4:45 p.m. Friday during a fight between two groups of young men near a basketball court at the city recreation facility in the 7000 block of Levant Street, according to police.Paramedics took Nguyen to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Lt.
