BEIJING, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Friday that he hoped China and the European Union (EU) would enhance its dialogue and consultation to ensure the healthy and stable development of the China-EU all-round strategic partnership.     Hu made the remarks in a meeting with EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.     He said it was not only in line with both sides' fundamental interests, but also conducive to the peace, stability and development of the world to further cement and step up China-EU ties under current circumstances. Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) meets with the European Union Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in Beijing, April 25, 2008    "I hope the two sides would keep high-level visits and enhance dialogue and consultation, increase understanding and recognition for the policy trends of each other," Hu told Barroso.     Hailing the development of China-EU cooperation in recent years, Hu called to promote exchange and cooperation in various sectors, deepen coordination on key multilateral affairs and global issues, and properly handle and solve major concerns or disputes between the two.     Barroso said maintaining robust EU-China ties were vital to both sides and the international society.     It needed efforts from both China and the EU to safeguard international energy, finance, food safety and stability and solve global issues of climate change, sustainable development and terrorism, said the former Portuguese prime minister.     He said the EU was committed to developing a strategic partnership with China and was willing to solve disputes through dialogue on the basis of mutual respect and constructive spirit.     Barroso expressed appreciation for China's consistent support for the EU integrity, and wished the Beijing Olympics a success.     Vice Premier Wang Qishan attended the meeting.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Thursday with Bill Gates, chairman of Bill & Gates Foundation, to discuss issues concerning development and poverty alleviation.     During their talks on the sidelines of the a high-level U.N. meeting for Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Wen expressed appreciation over Gates' long-term efforts for promoting settlement of issues concerning development.     The current turbulence in the international economic and financial situation, sharp increases in oil prices and food supplyshortage have made things more difficult for poor countries, Wen said. BEIJING, June 26 (Xinhua) -- The headquarters for quake-relief command of the State Council, China's Cabinet, on Thursday called for priority in reconstructing public facilities such as schools and hospitals in the country's southwestern quake-hit region.     At a regular meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, the headquarters clarified the main tasks of the relief and reconstruction in the quake-hit zone, giving priority to rebuilding and quality of public facilities that were closely related to the lives of local residents. BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday paid a morale-boosting visit to the country's Paralympic athletes, urging them to "strive to become strong and fight for the best."     With 16 days to go until the opening ceremony in Beijing, Hu, accompanied by Vice President Xi Jinping, went to the training center for Paralympic athletes in a northeastern suburb of the capital in the morning. Li won two gold medals at the 2004 Athens Paralympics. TOKYO, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Foreign ministers of China, Japan and South Korea agreed here Saturday to strengthen trilateral cooperation for better political, economic and cultural relations.     Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura and South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Yu Myung Hwan reached the agreement at the second trilateral meeting of foreign ministers from the three countries.
