CAIRO, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Egyptian industry officials vowed closer bilateral economic ties on Sunday with the signing of an industrial cooperation agreement.Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid met with Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Yizhong. Both talked about the expansion and improvement of bilateral trade and economic cooperation.Rachid told reporters that he hoped the new agreement would pave the way for more cooperation in different industry sectors including manufacturing of cars components, textiles, petrochemicals, electronics and technology."This agreement includes the process of sharing technology and increasing investment in the industrial sector and training of workers as well as helping Egyptian companies promote their products in the Chinese markets," said the Egyptian minister.The agreement also included the formation of an Egyptian- Chinese task force that takes the responsibility of sharing information and experiments in the industrial sectors and encouraging Egyptian and Chinese firms to establish joint ventures in different areas of cooperation, according to Rachid.Rachid said that Egypt wanted to benefit from the successful Chinese experience in the industrial sector.Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif also met with the Chinese minister. The prime minister said Egypt shows great interest in boosting cooperation with China.The bilateral trade between Egypt and China increased from 3 billion U.S. dollars in 2006 to 6.24 billion dollars in 2008, according to Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Wu Chunhua.By the end of last year, Chinese investment in Egypt exceeded 500 million U.S. dollars. Chinese auto companies such as Chery Automobile and Brilliance Automobile have had assembly lines here in Egypt.Rachid expected that the Egyptian-Chinese cooperation would witness a great milestone in all sectors, particularly the trade and industry relations thanks to exchanges in the economic and political levels.

VIENNA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) needs to enhance its role in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy, non-proliferation and fostering nuclear security, a senior Chinese official said here Monday.Global revitalization of nuclear energy has brought more opportunities for the IAEA to play an even larger role in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and technology, said Chen Qiufa, head of the Chinese delegation to the IAEA's 54th General Conference opened in Vienna.Chen, also director general of the China Atomic Energy Authority, told the conference that the IAEA should continue to strengthen technical cooperation for sustainable development of nuclear energy, and give heed to opinions of developing countries.On the issue of nuclear safety, Chen said the IAEA should continue to push forward the development of global nuclear safety and security legislation and standard system, to strengthen transfer of knowledge and exchange of experience, popularize and promote nuclear culture so as to increase public confidence in nuclear energy development.With increasing work load of nuclear verification activities, the agency should build its own technical capability while fully cooperating with member states and using their resources to achieve nuclear safeguards targets, he added.Chen pointed out that the IAEA should play an active role in addressing sensitive and hot-spot nuclear issues.He said China always holds that the nuclear conundrum on the Korean Peninsula and in Iran should be resolved through dialogues and negotiations.China also supported the IAEA and its director general to continue to play their due role to push forward the diplomatic settlement of these issues.

BEIJING, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's August economic data released Saturday gave relief to market participants, with the figures demonstrating the economy's continued momentum despite the government's tightening measures and moves to cool the property market.Higher-than-expected growth in fixed asset investment, industrial production, retail sales and new loans, as well as the August trade data announced Friday, all pointed to the increasing strength of the Chinese economy.SIGNS OF RE-ACCELERATIONChina's industrial value-added output growth accelerated to 13.9 percent year on year in August from July's 13.4 percent growth, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data showed.The rebound was the first increase in the speed of growth in industrial value-added output this year, after seven consecutive months of decreases in the rate of growth as the government introduced curbs on bank lending to energy-intensive industries and the property market. People buy vegetables in a market in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province, Sept. 11, 2010. Exports grew 34.4 percent year on year in August, slowing from July's 38.1-percent surge, while imports rose 35.2 percent in August, sharply up from the 22.7-percent increase in July, customs data showed Friday.Zhang Liqun, a researcher with the State Council's Development Research Center, said the investment, consumption and exports data were good and suggested that China's economic growth rates will not decline significantly.New yuan-denominated lending picked up to 545.2 billion yuan (80.53 billion U.S. dollars) in August compared with the 532.8 billion yuan in July, the People's Bank of China, or the central bank, said in a separate statement Saturday.China's broad money supply (M2), which covers cash in circulation and all deposits, increased 19.2 percent year on year by the end of August, up 1.6 percentage points from the end of July.The rebound of M2 from July indicated that China's economic slowdown was not as rapid as expected, said Liu Yuhui, economist with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences."The overall economy is stable and sound. YUSHU, Qinghai, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- It has been six years since Zhaduo was moved away from his home on the ecologically vulnerable grassland on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, but the 33-year-old said he still misses his yaks and the life of a herdsman."The money for selling 40 yaks and 25 sheep has been used," Zhaduo said. "It is so expensive to now live near the town center. Everything costs big money."Zhaduo is one of the emigrants from Rima village in Yushu County of northwest China’s Qinghai Province, near the source of China' s three major rivers - the Yangtze, the Yellow River, and the Lancang River - which form the world' s highest plateau wetland, known as Asia' s water tower.China started moving people out of the 150,000-sq-kilometer Sanjiangyuan region more than five years ago in a bid to repair the ecological system damaged by excessive herding and to transform the area into an unpopulated nature reserve.So far, some 50,000 herdsmen, mostly Tibetans, have bid farewell to the nomadic life and were moved closer to the town centers near their old homes, where they have better access to health and educational resources.Zhaduo now lives in Jiajiniang village, twelve minutes' drive from Gyegu township of Yushu. The family is surviving by picking mountain-grown caterpillar fungus.Zhaduo basically has no jobs in the months other than the harvest season from May to June, and he has no sense of security since he is relying on a business which can be bankrupt by inadequate rainfalls or abnormal climate changes."There is no way to return - the grassland is sealed off by the government and, anyway, I don' t have money to buy yaks and sheep," Zhaduo said.China' s policy makers have been urged to double their efforts to help the Sanjiangyuan emigrants adapt to the new life so the herdsmen who have no job skills do not have to be sacrificed by the massive ecological repair project.The government has earmarked 7.5 billion yuan (900 million US dollars) for the project.Li Xiaonan, deputy director of the Sanjiangyuan Ecological Preservation and Construction Office, said since efforts began to repair the wetland, it is now able to hold more water and the quality of the water has improved.The rising population, as well as overgrazing, have been blamed for the deteriorating ecosystem.Official statistics show that only 130,000 people lived in the prefectures of Guoluo and Yushu of the Sanjiangyuan region in 1949. However, the population grew five times over the past six decades.Li said the resettlement of 50,000 herdsmen is the key to improving the ecosystem, but the government will now have to find ways to provide more forms of aid, other than handing out quotas of free grain and cash subsidies to the resettled herdsmen.Additionally, the provincial government offers vocational training and has set aside funds to encourage small private businesses.Gongsangranjia is one of a few beneficiaries. He runs a Tibetan drug store near the town in the heart of Nangqian County, Yushu prefecture. Gongsangranjia and his family of ten moved out of the grassland 110 kilometers away from town some seven years ago.Since then, he sold two hundred yaks and sheep to build a spacious house and set up a drug store."The store income averages 300 to 400 yuan a day. The business is not bad," said Caiding, Gongsangranjia' s wife.Wang Hengsheng, a researcher with the Qinghai Academy of Social Sciences, said the resettlement program is not just "moving people out" but also helping them live a better life in a different environment."If they can not survive by themselves in the new environment, the Sanjiangyuan region won’t be able to achieve a long-term coordinated development of the ecosystem and the economy," Wang said.Ping Zhiqiang, an official with the provincial Development and Reform Commission of Qinghai, said the government should help resettled herdsman master a marketable trade and assist the region in developing a profitable sector. Only then can the improvement of the ecosystem be secured.
