But a recent report made by the Consumer Federation of America says that scary sales tactics and false claims are allowing companies to take your money right from in front of you, and the problem is growing across the country.While burglaries in the country are down by nearly 5 percent, the amount of alarm systems is expected to be up 30 percent by 2020."They're starting to see these alarming practices of companies using scare tactics, other kinds of misrepresentations and also failing to really make clear to consumers how much their services are going to cost," says Susan Grant, director of consumer protection and privacy at Consumer Federation of America.The report found companies tried instilling fear in people in order to get them to purchase their system.Other methods used are a little more subtle, but they can be just as deceiving. The report found that companies were often pressuring consumers into deals that were too good to be true."No deal is too good to pass up,” says Grant. “If the deal is good today, it's going to be good tomorrow."There are ways you can protect yourself. Grant says it's best to do your research; never sign anything on the spot. Also, avoid digital contracts that require you to sign on a phone or tab. You should ask for a copy of what you are signing."You want to shop around and see what the costs are of other companies and compare their reputations as well," suggests Grant.Checking the company’s reviews on the Better Business Bureau is a good place to start when choosing the right company.  1749

It's a phenomenon where we can feel emotionally lost of something without physical contact.“And that which is missing is something that normally provides us with some contentment, some solace, some feeling that we're safe and that we're amongst others who we can rely on as a bio-behavioral resource,” said Emiliana Simon-Thomas, PhD, Science Director at the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley.Simon-Thomas says hugs can help us communicate trust and support. She says even incidental moments of touch in the community, like brushing shoulders at a concert or giving someone a high-five, can help you feel reassurance.“I'm really worried about people who are absolutely alone,” she said. “I worry a lot about people who are ill and are in a situation where they're not allowed to be in company their loved ones.”For those people, she suggests focusing on a memory of the last time they hugged someone they love.It may sound odd, but some researchers also suggest hugging yourself.Touch is also associated with better heart health and higher levels of oxytocin in the brain. This past spring, teachers from West Virginia to Oklahoma walked out of their classrooms and onto the steps of state capitols to protest low pay, overcrowded classrooms and cuts to school funding.Oklahoma teacher Jacobi Crowley was one of the teachers who participated in the strikes.“I dunno if I can be a 20 to 40-year educator,” says Crowley. “I love my job and what I do, but if things do not get better, I might have to start looking at a different career.”If things go the way he hopes this November, he will have a different career as a state senator, one who sees education as priority number 1.“We have to be fully funded,” Crowley says. “That’s the number one thing.”Crowley is one of hundreds of teachers nationwide who decided to run for public office this year. In Oklahoma alone, more than 100 teachers filed to run, and over half of them made it through their primary races in June.“They are getting frustrated with seeing the lack of support, the lack of funding and the lack of leadership out of state legislators in Oklahoma City, making those things possible for educators to be successful,” Crowley expresses.Educators say it’s a frustration that’s been building for years.In 2011, teachers staged a walkout and camped out for weeks at the Wisconsin State Capitol, protesting Gov. Scott Walker’s bill that gutted their unions. Ultimately, they were unsuccessful.But Wisconsin’s Superintendent of Schools saw that as a catalyst and decided to take matters into his own hands.“I believe the best way to fix this is to have an educator as governor of the State of Wisconsin,” says Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Evers.Evers will take on incumbent Gov. Scott Walker this November.Cut in funding and teacher pay has been some of the core issues of the protests. In Oklahoma, Crowley—like many other teachers—works multiple jobs to pay the bills.“I’m a football coach, that’s one thing to make ends meet,” explains Crowley. “I’m a basketball referee; I work a side gig as a radio station.”However, Crowley hopes the voters of Senate District 32 will deem him worthy of just one. 2114
