BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Beijing launched a one-month household registration survey on Sunday in preparation for the once-a-decade census of China, the world's most populous country, which begins in November.A total of 100,000 uniformed census takers will go door-to-door in Beijing from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15, along with policemen, to check each household's current residential information, said a spokesman with the sixth national population census' Beijing office.Foreigners and residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan will also be surveyed for the first time, except those on short-term business or sightseeing trips, according to a census regulation jointly issued by the State Council and the National Bureau of Statistics in May."This is because the upcoming national census seeks to survey 'every natural person' in China and Chinese citizens who live abroad but have not obtained long-term living permits," said Su Hui, director of the office. The survey aims to count the total number of Beijing residents and to correct false household registration information and provide accurate information for the sixth national census, he said.Experts say that many households do not unregister their deceased family members so they might continue collecting social insurance funds from the government. Also, some children born in violation of the country's "one child" policy were also not registered. All information collected in this survey will be kept confidential, and will not be used for other purposes, Su added.Since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, China has conducted national population censuses in 1953,1964,1982,1990 and 2000.The last census, a decade ago, set China's population at 1.29533 billion people.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's central government has urged more efforts to be made to ensure this year's grain output, a government statement said Wednesday.A string of policies have been rolled out to support autumn grain production, said the State Council, China's cabinet, in the statement released after an executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday.Autumn grain production is key for China to meet its annual output target as it accounts for 70 percent of the total production. The Ministry of Finance will allocate 1.1 billion yuan (162.4 million U.S. Dollars) to subsidize purchases of fertilizer and pest control, the statement said.Wen urged efforts to restore production in disaster-hit regions at the meeting, after large swathes of farmland have been affected by floods in recent months.Wen also stressed the application of technology and weather forecasting at the meeting.China's summer grain output declined 0.3 percent year on year to 123.1 million tonnes this year, the first fall in seven years, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Since the first Group of 20 (G20) Summit in November 2008, the attention China has been getting has shifted from that of a turn-round-to, to that of a look-up-to, analysts said. Two years ago, almost all developed economies turned round to look at what actions China took to cope with the financial crisis. Now in the midst of a uneven global recovery, China has become one being looked up to by developing and developed economies for its leading if not exemplary roles. As the curtain is about to rise at the upcoming fourth G20 summit in Toronto, Canada, China and the crucial roles she is playing once again draws the world's attention.A STEADY STABILIZER IN GLOBAL DEVELOPMENTPrior to the first G20 summit, China has since been managing to sustain a rather fast growth rate while taking an active part in orchestrating with other economies, developed and developing alike, to push for a global recovery through reformed and renewed financial and economic mechanisms.Despite the fact it is still a developing country itself, China alone has contributed toward half of the global GNP growth in the time of crises.Amidst downslides of the United States, eurozone and Japan, China not only curbed the domino ripple in the country with a bolder-than-predicted stimulus package but also succeeded in effecting a lead in the recovery. It is its early lead off the blocks that is now being more than looked at by others.Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, soon to host the fourth G20 Summit, has described what China has done as a contribution to the global recovery and a great assistance to the international community in its crisis management.Takashi Sekiyama, a senior researcher from Japan's Meiji University and with the Tokyo Consortium, has rated China's contribution to the global economic development during this hard period as the "biggest."

BEIJING, June 18 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese government official has called for more efforts to promote increased awareness about energy-savings among the public and increase investments into research for energy-saving technologies.Vice Premier Li Keqiang made the remark in his letter to sponsors of China's 20th national energy-saving publicity week (June 12 to June 18) that ended on Friday.Various campaigns and promotional activities were held during the week to increase awareness about conserving energy among all communities and also promote energy-saving practices, Li said in the letter.Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said government should put more investment into research for energy-saving technologies.Additionally, long-term mechanisms for energy-savings should be established so that the 11th Five-Year Plan energy-saving goals could be realized, Li said.China seeks to reduce energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent in 2010 compared to 2005 levels, according to the country's 11th five-year plan (2006-2010).The 20th national energy-saving publicity week was sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission and 13 other government agencies.

"Bangladesh always regards China as an important strategic partner," she said.Talking with Bangladeshi Parliament Speaker Abdul Hamid, Xi spoke highly of the comprehensive development of bilateral relations since both countries established diplomatic relations 35 years ago.He reiterated China's commitment to work with Bangladesh to push forward their comprehensive partnership of cooperation. He also called on the legislatures of both countries to further strengthen communication and promote mutual understanding.Hamid said the Sino-Bangladeshi relationship is time-honored and all the parties in the Bangladeshi parliament support developing relations with China. In talks with President Zillur Rahman, Xi said the Sino-Bangladeshi relations have stood the test of changes in the world situation and continually move forward."The cooperation in all areas is very fruitful and has brought real benefits to the two peoples and also plays an active role in maintaining regional stability, peace and development," he added.Xi said the two countries' decision to establish a "Closer Comprehensive Partnership of Cooperation" last March showed the direction for further developing bilateral relationship.Rahman said Bangladesh and China maintain good relationship. He believed Xi's visit will greatly promote the friendship between the two peoples and push bilateral relationship to a new level. On Tuesday afternoon, Xi left Dhaka for Vientiane, capital of the Lao People's Democratic Republic for an official visit. In a written speech at the airport upon his arrival, Xi said China and Laos enjoy profound traditional friendship, and established a comprehensive strategic partnership last year.Laos is the second leg of Xi's four-nation trip on June 14-24, which will also take him to New Zealand and Australia.
