Jesse Walaschek says 15 to 20 seconds saved him and his family. The 41-year-old, his wife and three kids -- ages 8, 6 and 4 -- had just left a fitness center at a shopping mall in the South Florida city of Plantation when a possible gas explosion Saturday shattered parts of the building, injuring at least 23 people, including two with serious injuries."We felt the loudest boom that you could possibly feel. I looked in my rear view mirror and it was just a dust cloud," Walaschek told CNN. "Had we walked out of that gym 15 seconds later, I would've been getting my kids in the car when it went off. I probably wouldn't be here, my kids wouldn't be here."A search of the blast zone has been completed, police said. There were no fatalities and all the victims have been located, Plantation Fire Deputy Chief Joel Gordon told reporters during a Saturday afternoon press conference. All the injured were taken to area hospitals, he said. Among the injured was a child, but the injuries were not classified as serious, Gordon said."We're relieved that considering the debris field and considering how we found the patients and where we found them, the injuries are not as severe as we would've thought they would be. So we're very thankful for that," Gordon said. The blast appeared to have occurred in a corner of the mall complex where two buildings intersect.News footage and social media video showed firefighters arriving at the mall, where windows were blown out of an LA Fitness and the facade of a pizza restaurant appeared to be blown out. A section of the complex appeared to sustain significant damage, with shattered windows and scattered debris.'It was almost like the world was ending'Walaschek was driving said while he is thankful they made it out safely, he worried about other families at the gym."Thing that was on my mind actually was the 20 to 25 children we saw in the children's area when we left," he said.Witnesses described a chaotic scene following the explosion.Alex Carver, who works at a deli across the street from where the explosion occurred, said he and his colleagues initially thought the sound was thunder."Then we felt the building shake and things started falling. I looked outside and it was almost like the world was ending," Carver, told 2289

It's mid-May, but winter apparently is not finished with parts of the Northeast, which could see yet more snow this week.Cold air coming in from Canada is likely to cause a mix of snow and rain in higher elevations of New Hampshire, Vermont and much of northern Maine by early Tuesday, CNN meteorologist Gene Norman said."It wouldn't be surprising to see flakes flying in places like Montpelier (Vermont) and Portland, Maine," Norman said, adding that if there is measurable snowfall in Portland, it would be the latest in the year that the white stuff has fallen since May 11, 1945.That's after a miserable Mother's Day of of sleet and snow in parts of western Massachusetts. That was produced in part by the same low-pressure system that triggered flooding rains and some severe storms through the Southeast.Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant on Sunday issued a state of emergency following the strong storms and flooding that started Wednesday, with multiple counties reporting major flooding. Damage possibly caused by tornadoes was reported in two counties, the governor's office said in a press release.Southern Texas was 1134

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — School officials at Blue Valley School District in Kansas say they are having a problem with students vaping at school. The problem is so severe that school officials are calling it an "epidemic." "Students have been caught vaping in classes, in our hallways, in our bathrooms," said David Stubblefield, Blue Valley's executive director of school administration. "Kids have come to us and said they cannot sit through an entire class without vaping." According to the school district, vaping usage has increased among students in high school year after year. The district has also seen students vaping in middle school. Every day, principals are dealing with some problem involving vaping, Stubblefield said. "A lot of times there’s not a long-lasting smell to it and the vape can dissipate very quickly. They are so easily concealable because they look like normal, everyday devices, like a USB," Stubblefield said. To combat vaping, the school district is focusing on education. Tuesday night, the district hosted an open house for parents and students to learn about potential health risks associated with vaping. The district also changed 1175
