A former Google engineer is accusing the company of firing him after he spoke out about incidents of racism, sexism and harassment.Tim Chevalier is suing Google for retaliation, wrongful termination and failure to prevent discrimination and harassment, according to a lawsuit filed in San Francisco on Wednesday.Silicon Valley -- and Google in particular -- has been shaken by fierce debates over diversity issues. Highly charged arguments between Google employees have at times burst into public view as the company wrestles with how to address the concerns.The lawsuit by Chevalier, who identifies as transgender and disabled, claims Google's culture is discriminatory. He alleges that some employees use the company's internal social-networking and messaging systems to belittle and bully women, people of color and LGBTQ colleagues."Chevalier pushed back on the online bullying he and others were experiencing, using the same internal messaging systems to try to educate his employer and coworkers on how to change Google's working conditions to be inclusive and supportive of underrepresented minorities, such as himself," the lawsuit says.His lawsuit alleges that rather than trying to address the concerns he was raising about other employees' behavior, Google fired him in November, citing the political nature of his posts."It is a cruel irony that Google attempted to justify firing me by claiming that my social networking posts showed bias against my harassers," Chevalier said in a statement provided by his lawyers. "The anti-discrimination laws are meant to protect marginalized and underrepresented groups -- not those who attack them."Google spokeswoman Gina Scigliano declined to comment directly on Chevalier's allegations. She said that lively debate is important to Google's culture, but that there are limits."All employees acknowledge our code of conduct and other workplace policies, under which promoting harmful stereotypes based on race or gender is prohibited," Scigliano said in a statement. "This is a very standard expectation that most employers have of their employees. The overwhelming majority of our employees communicate in a way that is consistent with our policies. But when an employee does not, it is something we must take seriously. We always make our decision without any regard to the employee's political views."In the lawsuit, which was first reported by tech news site Gizmodo, Chevalier alleges that some Googlers would call coworkers "immoral" because of their sexual orientation. Employees also questioned the competency of women and minorities on internal message boards, he said."Company social networking forums can be incredibly useful, but employers have an obligation to prevent them from becoming a cesspool of bullying and harassment," David Lowe, an attorney for Chevalier, said in a statement. "Firing the employee who pushed back against the bullies was exactly the wrong step to take."Debates inside Google about diversity issues erupted in August when one of the company's senior engineers at the time, James Damore, published a controversial memo claiming women are underrepresented in technology because of psychological and biological differences, not sexism.In his memo, Damore claimed to "value diversity and inclusion," but he took issue with Google's approach, which he described as overly political and alienating to "non-progressives."Damore, who was fired over the controversy, and another former Google engineer, David Gudeman, are suing the company, alleging that it discriminates against white men and conservatives.Chevalier waded into the internal debates over Damore's memo last summer, according to his lawsuit. It says that in September, a Google human resources representative spoke with Chevalier about some of his emails and posts on internal forums regarding the memo and other politically charged subjects.Google is also facing a gender-pay lawsuit claiming the company paid women less than their male counterparts.  4016

A key forecasting model that’s been cited by the White House and state officials now predicts the COVID-19 death toll in the United States will surpass 410,000 by January 1.The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington released its latest forecast Friday, saying the U.S. and other countries in the Northern Hemisphere should prepare for a seasonal rise in COVID-19 cases.COVID-19 has already killed at least 186,800 people in the U.S., according to an ongoing tally from Johns Hopkins University.“I would call the surge in the winter that we’re forecasting a second wave,” said IHME Director Dr. Christopher Murray in a call with reporters Friday.The IHME says COVID-19 has followed seasonal patterns similar to pneumonia and if that correlation continues to hold, northern countries can anticipate more cases in the late fall and winter months.“The worst is yet to come,” warned Murray. “I don’t think perhaps that’s a surprise, although I think there’s a natural tendency as we’re a little bit in the Northern Hemisphere summer, to think maybe the epidemic is going away.”The IHME’s prediction of 410,000 U.S. deaths by Jan. 1 is its most likely scenario, but it also provided a worst-case scenario. If mask usage stays the same and states continue to relax social distancing requirements, the IHME model predicts over 620,000 Americans could die from the virus by the new year.The IHME’s best-case scenario, where mask usage is universal and governments impose social distancing requirements, shows more than 286,000 people dying across the nation by the end of the year.“We are facing the prospect of a deadly December, especially in Europe, Central Asia, and the United States,” said Murray in a statement. “But the science is clear and the evidence irrefutable: mask-wearing, social distancing, and limits to social gatherings are vital to helping prevent transmission of the virus.”Globally, the IHME predicts that nearly 770,000 lives could be saved between now and Jan. 1 through proven measures such as mask-wearing and social distancing.Across the world, deaths expected by Jan. 1 total 2.8 million, about 1.9 million more from now until the end of the year, the IHME says. Daily deaths in December could reach as high as 30,000.Under the most likely of IHME’s scenarios, the nations with the highest per capita total deaths would be the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Netherlands, and Spain.The IHME says these five countries will most likely have the highest cumulative death tolls by Jan. 1:India: 659,537U.S.: 410,451Brazil: 174,297Mexico: 138,828Japan: 120,514IHME says its projections are based on an epidemiological model that includes data on cases, deaths, and antibody prevalence, as well as location-specific COVID-19 testing rates, mobility, social distancing mandates, mask use, population density and age structure, and pneumonia seasonality, which shows a strong correlation with the trajectory of COVID-19. 2977

She says her daughter told her about the punishment when she came home that day.According to Trofy’s daughter, several kids complained of headaches and cramps. "The school stripped me of my right to nurture my child when she didn't feel good by not letting me know she didn't feel good,” Trofy said. The Dysart Unified School District confirmed to KNXV that they are reviewing the teacher’s actions that day. We’re told that the practice is not “district approved.” However, a spokesperson says it only lasted around five minutes. Students were checked by a school nurse and none displayed any signs of heat exhaustion. The Dysart Unified School District would not elaborate if the teacher would be facing punishment or has a history of questionable decision making. A spokesperson told us they cannot discuss personnel matters. "My daughter is right now scared to go back to school for fear of seeing the teacher that got frustrated with them,” Trofy said. A police officer was informed of the incident. A controversial radio ad airing in the St. Louis area led to mounting criticism on Friday as the campaign for Republican Senate candidate Josh Hawley said it did not support the commercial claiming white Democrats could end up lynching black Missouri voters.The ad was paid for by the Black Americans for the President’s Agenda political action committee, based out of West Virginia, and aired for races in both Missouri and Arkansas.In the 60-second ad, two women are heard talking about the Brett Kavanaugh investigation and alleged threats that could happen if Democrats win on Election Day this year.“What will happen to our husbands, fathers, or sons when a white girl lies on them?” one woman asks. “Girl, white Democrats will be lynching black folk again. A Macomb Dakota (Mich.) High School Spanish teacher has been charged for allegedly stealing from the school's homecoming dance and using that money at the casino.According to Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith, Lydia Johnson, 29, is charged with one count of embezzlement from a non-profit organization which could get her 10 years in prison.Johnson was Dakota's student activity coordinator from July 1, 2016 until her recent removal and was responsible for all funds. 483
