SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans presented five renderings of possible suicide barriers for the San Diego-Coronado Bridge.More than 400 people have killed themselves by jumping from the bridge since it was opened in 1969, making it the second deadliest suicide bridge in the nation behind San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.The possible suicide barriers include a large net underneath the bridge similar to the one to be put on the Golden Gate Bridge, three types of fencing, or 18-inch spikes on top of the existing barriers.Caltrans said one design will be chosen in Spring 2018.They said it will take several years to build the barrier because they need to have environmental impact studies done and get funding for it.  752

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Balboa Park is getting some new trees and, in turn, lending itself to a new brew.Friends of Balboa Park planted about 27 new trees in Balboa Park Friday in celebration of Arbor Day. The trees were placed in the grove on Park Blvd. and Morley Field Dr., across from the San Diego Zoo.The trees planted including six different varieties and are all perfect for San Diego's semi-arid climate."Friends is honored to have such strong support from our donors and corporate partners that enables us to continue making meaningful enhancements to the Park," John Bolthouse, Friends of Balboa Park executive director, said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crowds have been sparse at Balboa Park since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but that doesn't mean the park hasn't been busy."The change in Balboa Park is evident. The change in Balboa Park is important," says Peter Comiskey, the Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership.Comiskey says nearly every museum in the park has used the unexpected downtime to refresh their exhibits or renovate their facility. That includes large-scale renovations at the Timken and Mingei Museums."While they've been closed, they've been taking advantage of, in some cases, completely removing all of their pieces and reworking their entire buildings," says Comiskey.RELATED: Observation Wheel could bring people back to the parkBut it's not just museums. The 100-year old carousel is getting refurbished. Crews are almost finished building an observation deck around the Morton Bay Fig Tree. Five new cottages in the International Village are about to open up, housing 9 new cultural groups. "We want to do our part to help elevate the Palisades and revitalize it in the way that Plaza de Panama was."The pandemic allowed the Comic-Con Museum to get a head start on their online offerings, while still working on building renovations and exhibit planning.The Starlight plans show new terraced lawn seating, nature gardens, walking trails, and smaller stages surrounding the main bowl.Save Starlight President Steve Stopper says work is already underway on some of the smaller parts of the renovation, so they can build excitement over the coming months."It creates a window for people to get behind the idea," he says. "They can see this is really viable for the future."Stopper says it's an exciting time to be around the park, as it adds more gems to the Crown Jewel of San Diego. 2669

The cool zones, spread out throughout the county, provide designated air-conditioned facilities that provide a place to beat the heat. According to county officials, the cool zones provide a place where seniors and others can congregate to protect their health and reduce individual energy costs. The program has been in operation since 2001. The County Health and Human Services Agency Aging and Independence Services partners with San Diego Gas and Electric to provide the service. Be your most physically active during the coolest part of the day, usually between 4-7 a.m. Pace yourself when engaging in physical activity.Stay indoors as much as possible. If air conditioning is not being used, stay on the lowest floor. Keep shades down and blinds closed, but windows slightly open.Electric fans do not cool the air, but they do help sweat evaporate, which cools your body.Take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath.Avoid using the oven.Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's heat.Air out hot cars before getting into them.Never leave children or pets inside vehicles at any time, even with the windows cracked. Temperatures inside a vehicle can reach lethal levels no matter what the weather is like.Drink more fluids than usual even if you do not feel thirsty.Water is the safest liquid to drink during heat emergencies. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine; they make the heat's effects on your body worse.Eat small meals and eat more often.
