(KGTV) — More than 20,000 acres have been scorched in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties by the Apple Fire since Friday, prompting evacuation orders for thousands of residents.The fire had burned 26,450 acres and was 5% contained as of Monday at 7:48 a.m., according to Cal Fire.Officials say the blaze began as two separate fires on Friday in Cherry Valley, an unincorporated area near Beaumont in Riverside County, before exploding over the weekend and crossing into San Bernardino County.RELATED: Several San Diego County fire departments help fight growing Apple FireThe U.S. Forest Service says the majority of the area covering the northern and eastern edges of the fire is very steep and rugged, making it difficult for crews to access the area with vehicles. The agency added that a high pressure ridge on Sunday created hot and dry conditions, fueling the flames.Helicopters and fixed-wing air tankers were assisting ground crews and equipment in battling the fire.At least one home and two outbuildings have been destroyed by the fire and several more were threatened. A 60-year-old homeless man was arrested on Thursday in Okaloosa County, Florida after he was accused of molesting a 6-year-old girl at an emergency shelter as residents rode out Hurricane Michael on Wednesday. The makeshift shelter was located at a middle school.According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, John Stapleton was arrested on charges of lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under the age of 12.A witness reported to deputies that Stapleton was seen on video allegedly touching the 6-year-old girl in a lewd manner underneath her clothing. The sheriff's office said that investigators reviewed the video and that Stapleton admitted to touching the girl, but not in a lewd manner.According to the Northwest Florida Daily News, deputies said they routinely run background checks on evacuees entering emergency shelters. The Daily News said there was no record that Stapleton had ever been charged with child molestation in the past. Background checks at emergency shelters have been a point of contention, according to the Daily News. At another shelter in Okaloosa County, staffers from the Red Cross reportedly walked out over a disagreement about background checks. A 73-year-old woman who was struck by a stray bullet while sitting in her kitchen has died.Investigators say the bullet entered her home off Dunn Road in Riley Township, Michigan on Sunday afternoon.Detectives told Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit a neighbor was shooting target practice at the time.
