CLEVELAND — Chadwick Boseman’s death is putting the spotlight on colorectal cancer.Doctors are concerned about the alarming increase in patients between the ages of 25 and 45 years old who are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer.“I’m seeing younger and younger patients. 22-year-olds, 25-year-olds, 26-year-olds, and it’s left all of us a little bit puzzled as to why this is happening,” said Dr. Alok Khorana with the Cleveland Clinic.Carole Motycka went to the doctor for shoulder pain four years ago.“He ordered some tests and it turned out I had a lot more going on than I anticipated,” Motycka said.Motycka was 42 years old when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. She is now on a mission to bring attention, awareness and education to the disease and the increase in younger patients.“Two decades ago, this was widely recognized as a disease in older people,” said Khorana. He said there has been a substantial increase. “Maybe 100% increase, but rates are still very low,” he explained.Colon cancer is much more common among older people. Black men also have higher rates of the disease.There has been a decrease in colon cancer rates among people 50 years old and above, while an increase in the 25-45 age group. Most young patients do not have a family history of the disease.Experts believe catching colon cancer early is the key to survival. But young people are typically diagnosed much later, and Khorana said the cancer seems to be more aggressive.Doctors don’t yet know what is causing the spike in young people.“There are a lot of clues. There’s been an obesity epidemic in the younger population that came 10 to 20 years before the rise in colon cancer,” said Khorana. “A second clue offered is antibiotic use in young people,” he added.Boseman, who played superhero Black Panther on screen, fought a battle off-screen against colon cancer privately for four years.“It’s sad to know it had to happen to have awareness take place but also it’s good to know we can have the conversation on a bigger platform and stage,” said Motycka.Click here for a look at symptoms of colon cancer. Communities are still rebuilding after a Category 4 Hurricane Laura hit Louisiana in August.“I feel like I was coming to a third-world country when we came back," described Pam Abshire when she returned to southeast Louisiana home following the storm.As she assessed the damage to her home, Abshire began picking up shards of glass from the windows that were blown out by the hurricane.Abshire is an elementary school art teacher. She says she plans to use the glass for a project at school."They’ll have something to remember and they can hang on to," she said.The year 2020 has proven that Mother Nature knows how to challenge those who live in places like the Gulf Coast.In October, Hurricane Delta brought flooding, wind, and more pain to those who are still trying to clean up after Hurricane Laura less than two months ago.Dr. Tyson Green's home was destroyed by Laura and he doesn't know where his family of six will call home next. His family evacuated ahead of the storm, but he stayed behind to care for his patients. Now, he's raising thousands of dollars for frontline medical workers who lost everything in the storms.Other businesses, who were already struggling through the pandemic, are trying to stay afloat.As a man with a guitar plays upbeat music outside Jason Machulski's downtown Lake Charles market, business is giving him a positive outlook.Like many business owners this year, the pandemic has been a fight.“We provided toilet paper, essentials, meat, bread, cleaning supplies, but it hit us financially pretty bad," Machulski recalled.Hurricane Laura knocked his power out for a month. His lights are now back on, but for many others, they’ll stay dark.“A lot of businesses that are local staples are just gone," he said.The people of Lake Charles may wonder why Mother Nature chose them.“You just trust in God that he’s going to take care of things," said Abshire.For those still sifting through the rubble, rebuilding is less about why and more about what you can learn on the journey to recovery.“Picking up the pieces and going forward, and that’s what we’re going to do," Abshire said. 2124

CLEVELAND — As we’ve seen throughout this pandemic, people on both sides of the mask debate are passionate about where they stand.“It’s very sad that this has become a political issue,” said Sharona Hoffman, a professor of Law and Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University.On Wednesday night, an order from Governor Mike DeWine will take effect, requiring masks in public settings in parts of Ohio, including Ohio's three largest cities of Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati. Ohio, unlike a number of other states, does not have a statewide mandate on wearing masks. The move sparked increased chatter around the claim that these mandates infringe on the rights of Americans.“This shouldn’t be about people’s liberties,” said Hoffman.Government mandates are nothing new.“We have to pay taxes, we have to abide by the speed limit,” said Hoffman.During this pandemic, regulations requiring masks are no different and totally appropriate, according to Hoffman.“This type of regulation is legal, constitutional and very, very sensible,” said Hoffman.One of the main responsibilities of elected officials is to ensure the health and safety of those they serve.“It wouldn’t make sense to even have a government if their hands were tied and they couldn’t take these measures,” said Hoffman.Hoffman said people should be willing to mask-up on their own and not be told to do so.“This should be something that people are very willing to do not only to protect themselves but also to protect other people,” said Hoffman. Collin Green sent notice to Chief Petty Officer Edward Gallagher that his status as a SEAL is under review, according to his lawyer.The process, commonly called a Trident Review, could strip Gallagher of his trident pin and remove him from the SEAL teams, though his rank and paygrade in the Navy would not be changed.“It’s ordinarily a procedure used for a substandard performer or somebody who’s committing safety violations,” said Timothy Parlatore, a civilian attorney for Gallagher.RELATED: Trump restores rank of San Diego Navy SEAL following war crimes caseParlatore said Gallagher is planning on retiring as soon as possible, so the move to strip his trident pin would not have any dramatic effect on his current role.“It has no legitimate value for someone about to retire,” said Parlatore. “It is purely a retaliation.
