SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — A construction worker was killed in an accident at Monte Vista High School hours after the topping out of the school's new multi-use facility. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the accident happened just before 2 p.m.Deputies say the 30-year-old man fell from a beam attached to a 30-foot platform. Deputies and emergency responders performed first aid on the construction worker, but he later died after being taken to the hospital. A second worker was also injured and taken to the hospital, but their condition is unknown at this time, according to the school district. CA-OSHA is investigating the incident and crisis counselors will be made available at the school Thursday. Some San Diego voters are making a surprising - and alarming - discovery in their mailboxes.They are receiving duplicate mail-in ballots for the November midterm. "Obviously with such a contested election and everything in the news right now, was this actually something bigger?" said April Segal, a Hillcrest resident who received two ballots.Nearly 70 percent of voters in the county say they will vote via the postal service this November. People from Hillcrest to Tierrasanta to Escondido have reported receiving the extra ballots. San Diego Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said there are protections in place to make sure everyone gets one only one vote. He said duplicates are not uncommon and this year is a bit worse than others because of issues with the new voter registration system at the DMV. "Our office and the statewide system runs duplicate checks to determine matches or potential matches," Vu said. "When a duplicate record is identified, the record is merged, with the most recent registration becoming the official record."Vu said no matter which ballot a person submits, it will ultimately be counted. He said anyone who knowingly submits two ballots would be referred to the district attorney for an investigation of voter fraud. Segal said she recently got married, changed her name and registered to vote. A few months later, when applying for a Real-ID at the DMV, she checked the 'yes' box when it asked if she would like to register to vote. That likely led to the duplicate ballot. "I knew I already was registered, but I thought I should just err on yes so that nothing got messed up by saying no," she said. Segal said she would continue to vote by mail, despite the mix-up.  1758

Smoke from the raging wildfires on the West Coast has reached the eastern seaboard.Images from a NASA satellite show clouds of smoke stretching from coast to coast.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says the smoke made its way east in two different directions. One trail of smoke crossed the Great Lakes region and reached upstate New York. Another path of smoke wound its way through Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and into the Mid-Atlantic.Some of the smoke even drifted up into Canada.The wildfires have led to hazardous air quality along parts of the West Coast, but air quality in most of the eastern U.S. is not affected. 657

Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she is calling the House back into session this week to vote on a bill prohibiting the U.S. Postal Service from implementing any changes to operations or level of service. The action comes amid growing concerns that the Trump White House is trying to undermine the agency during the coronavirus pandemic while states expand mail-in voting options. A senior Democratic aide tells The Associated Press that House Democrats are likely to discuss the schedule on a conference call on Monday and are expected to be in session next Saturday.Pelosi sent a letter to Democratic members, stating that changes to the post office would "threaten to deny the ability of eligible Americans to cast their votes through the mail in the upcoming elections in a timely fashion. These delays also threaten the health and economic security of the American people by delaying delivery of life-saving medicines and payments. In 2019, 1.2 billion prescriptions were delivered through the Postal Services, including almost 100 percent from the VA to veterans." Any changes would need the approval of the Senate and president.
